This video will teach you the poem ‘Remember’ by Christina Rossetti.
💫 Who was Christina Rossetti?
💫 Why were Victorians obsessed with death?
💫 What are the traits of a Petrarchan Sonnet?
💫 Why were Rossetti’s views on death so radical?
These are just four questions I answer in this video. We’ll also cover some literary devices, rhyme, form and structure.
This poem can be studied by anyone at any level but is specific to the AQA English Literature A-Level from the ‘Love Through The Ages’ syllabus.

Wow! I read a Christina Rossetti poem 'taped' for my sister's funeral last year. I couldn't get there for the funeral due to COVID (I'm in Australia, my sister in England). Out of that experience, and I think part of my grief journey, I discovered I love poetry. Your analysis of 'Remember' is so enlightening it further inspires me to read poetry (and listen to your channel) for beauty and that feeling that you are not alone. Thank you.

I think and feel (as perhaps you are also suggesting) that in the poem Rossetti is expressing what one may consider to be one of loves deepest attributes of poetic wisdom. To graciously let go of deep temporal bonds, While empowering her lover too still find, LOVE. It is powerful. As ever, many thanks Be well P.T. Are you familiar with the Richard Lovelace poem "To Lucasta, on Going to the Wars" ... Its a poem that seems to release love From the intended subject to truly Embrace its amorphous value.
@GabriellaTavini
@GabriellaTavini 2 жыл бұрын
Totally - that’s exactly what she’s doing. She probably saw other people grieving a loved one and becoming stifled by their grief, never moving on. She didn’t want that for her own partner. And I’m not familiar with that poem, but I’ll look it up. 🙏🏻

Hiii, I rly like ur analysis on ‘remember.’ Recently, I’m doing poetry comparison between this poem and sonnet 116. Is it possible if i say that one of the similarities between these two poems is that they all want to convey the theme of love and the eternity of love? In sonnet 116, Shakespeare gave many examples of how love is permanent, and for Rossetti, although death may bring grief to her lover but she eventually encourages her lover to still find love, so that love can be continued and can be everlasting? And her selfless love also indicates that love is boundless and it actually goes beyond the two lovers … can that be considered as a similarity? Dont know, lol, thank you!!!
@GabriellaTavini
@GabriellaTavini 2 жыл бұрын
TAll amazing points especially the idea about Rossetti’s love being boundless as she encourages her lover to continue living and loving someone else. Just a note on what they’re both conveying. Just say “the eternity of love” rather than “love” on its own. “Love” on its own is too broad. By specifying the “eternity of love” you actually make your argument stronger. Good luck! Thanks for commenting 🙏🏻
