Agnes was deeply religious and chastised Burns for his protestations of love. He and Agnes (Nancy in the song) had a platonic relationship. Burns got Nancy's maid servant pregnant and abandoned her to her fate. He wrote many letters to her and she to him. After his death she was able to recover all her letters to Burns. They used pseudonyms in the letters. She was 'Clarinda'.
