There’s still a sears in the gardens mall in palm beach gardens Florida, which is somewhat ironic as it’s a very upscale mall. There’s only a handful left I believe.

I used to shop at Sears in the 80s and 90s. The quality of the merchandise was a lot better than stuff that could be found in a Wal-mart or a Target. They had unique brands like Bugle Boy, sold electronics and Mattresses. Sears owned Craftsman tools and had a deal with Whirlpool appliances. You wouldn't want to buy a Refrigerator at a Wal-Mart at least not back in those days. Sears would warranty the thing for 10 years at no additional cost. They employed their own repairmen that would fix any appliance even stuff that was 30 or 40 years old. It was amazing when you bought at Sears you knew you were getting the good stuff that would last forever. The downfall of sears was because they closed their mail order catalogue in the 90s which was the about the worst move they could have made. All they had to do was put the catalogue online. In 1990 Sears had this huge network of warehouses and distribution centers for their catalogue. Instead of putting that online they dismantled the whole thing. They could have been bigger than Amazon and did it in the 90s. But the executives were all dim witted fools. They were like we don't need this internet thing. Every town has Sears store, we don't need the catalogue anymore. Dumb, dumb, dumb. Then they ended up buying K-Mart which itself was dying. That buyout created a ton of debt and they ended up going bankrupt through colossal mismanagement. Getting rid of the Sears mail order catalogue has to be one of the biggest business screw ups in history. It is on the level Blockbuster turning down the offer to buy Netflix or Xerox inventing the computer mouse and giving it Steve Jobs for free.

My old man worked at sears automotive for nearly 40 years. I think like 1974-2011. He retired right in time, and was able to get his pension. I never knew it when I was a kid, but from what I understand, sears was one of the best places to work, and you were doing well if you had a job there. It was def true, bc my dad’s income in the 80s, adjusted for inflation was like 90K a year now. Unfortunately, after 1992, his pay completely stagnated. He was an extremely talented mechanic, and could have gone anywhere, but I guess he was scared to leave, and I get that. Sears has a special place in my heart, because it basically put a roof over my head, along with a good middle-class life. It’s sad to see such a company decline in that way; it’s like the equivalent of Amazon going bust in 100 years. Good vids DG; keep em comin!

yep, sears paid employees too much and had too many and didnt save for a rainy day. this is why today even though a company had record profits last year it shouldnt pay higher wages this year. it should save and invest that money so you keep your job for next 20 years.

My dad worked for Sears from mid 80s to mid 90s in the appliance repair division. Don't know if anyone remembers, but sears would always have this fleet of white vans. That was their own appliance repair team. It was a tough, but well paying job. He was on call pretty much 24/7. If someone's furnace went out in the middle of the night, he was required to go and fix it right on the spot. Sears is also the place that I got a lot of my video games from as a kid, with that nifty "employee discount" we had, which was still valid even after he left, due to an injury sustained from a crash in the Sears van.

when we moved out of state in 1998, we still had olive green kenmore washer, dryer, fridge, stove matching set from when house was built in 1975. I think dryer was fixed once. really hated to sell them/leave them. but moved to apartment that had that stuff already. gave up our old rca cabinet tv, electrolux vaccuum cleaner and more from 70s and 80s for overpriced junk that lasts 5 to 10 years so greedy union employees can get paid $60 an hour to tighten bolts.

'Sears and Roebuck' was there before anybody. People ordered from a catalog and the items were delivered. (Which is what we have with Amazon today.) And when I was young, people went to Sears to buy washers, dryers, refrigerators, and TVs. Somehow, they frittered it all away. Now we have Lowe's and Home Depot instead of Sears hardware. Sears had it all, and now they have nothing. Crazy.

Man I wish I had the foresight to buy up as much of the "Made in USA" versions of the craftsman tools before they gave into China
@SgtJoeSmith
@SgtJoeSmith Жыл бұрын
lot of those made in usa craftsman hand tools like drill bits, wrenches, ratchets, sockets, etc were made by either Rogers tool works, Kennametal, or Dahnaher in Bentonville/Rogers/Springdale/Etc north west Arkansas metro where i live currently. I had a friend that made drill bits at RTW and dad had a friend that made ratchets at Dahnaher. Dads friend brought a ratchet by he made with the chrome/black oxide parts reversed 1 day years ago he made 1 day at work. It was funny to see. i forget if it had craftsman engraved/stamped on it or not but if it did and he still has it he could probably sell it for a fortune today as a unicorn 1 of a kind "error" though he did it on purpose screwing around. dam i wish i offered to buy it or asked him to make me 1 now. After Dahnaher lost craftsman contract they got the lowes/kobalt contract and made same tools for lowes for several years in early 2000s. so some early 2000s kobalt tools are same as pre 2000 craftsman tools made at same place in my city. i buy tools at actions and garage sales to find these old gem tools and get them cheap cause most people are like who cares about a 50 year old wrench when you can buy a brand new 1 at home cheapo or HF. Not knocking HF as i use a lot of their tools for occasional use purposes to save money and some stuff is better than snap on. but i love my old craftsman, kobalt and walmart popular mechanics wrenches and tools. My city btw is also where walmart started and home office is at.

Sears decline was before the internet. Department stores were on their way out in the 80's with the rise of the "big box" stores like Home Depot, Best Buy, Kohls, etc. Sears also lacked much of the every day items you find at Walmart, so there is nothing compelling someone to go to Sears every week.

Something never mentioned in the decline of Sears is the rise of Lowes and Home Depot. The core strength of Sears in the 80s and 90s were craftsman tools and Kenmore appliances. In hindsight, they should have expanded the hardware side of the business, abandoned the software side. I highly doubt that Sears was the place women wanted to go for clothes. We could’ve had a thriving Sears operation today competing against Hone Depot and Lowes . I understand that that would’ve been a massive investment in the 1980s at a time when operations were still profitable. The legacy of Sears still lives on with corporate spinoffs Allstate, Caldwell Banker and the Discover card

Our Sears store had been a mall anchor since the mid 60s. The mall still does a good amount of business, but Sears still tanked. It was shuttered in 2018, sat vacant for a few years, and is now a large furniture store. There's a former K Mart just a half mile away that also closed in 2018, and after sitting abandoned for a couple years, was renovated into an Amazon warehouse. It was completed over a year ago, but it's obvious, it's not operational yet

I would go to Sears in Philly when it was at its peak in the 70’s. Every department had a dedicated employee that actively worked, sold merchandise and operated a register in that area. Amazing when compared to the retail wasteland it became, where I’d walk in and couldn’t find an open register or employee!

My last time in a Sears was in 2007. I relocated and needed a washer/dryer pair. I knew pretty much what I wanted, but the saleslady (who I could clearly tell she really had no clue what she was talking about) kept insisting to upsale me, but I kept my ground. Then, she would NOT complete my sale unless I 1) applied for their stupid Sears/Kmart points/loyalty program, 2) apply for an extended warranty, and 3) finance my purchase by applying for their store credit card. Not "any" or "or"... "ALL!" I was just flabbergasted just ended up walking out. Point is, even then, I could tell they were struggling, and then have endured those overly-pushy sales tactics and impose unrealistic metrics on their staff that they'd rather LOSE sales than to let customers decline on unnecessary add-ons was just mind-boggling. Which only conveyed to me how desperate they were (and definitely NOT how to stay in business)

sadly… Sears had a merger with K-Mart.. Management focused on the K-Mart side and trying to save it (which died even faster) but as I hear it.. just assumed Sears was going to stand tall… when K-Mart really got desparate is when Sears was starting to feel it.. 2 things happened.. they didn’t pay attention and realized that one of their 2 staples suddenly had quite a bit of competition.. Kenmore appliances were the best of the ERA.. but suddenly while Management looked elsewhere others entered the mix and Kenmore suddenly became the overpriced out dated equipment.. on top of that, Craftsman tools was still a leader.. but it was not enough to keep them afloat and when they started down bankruptcy.. Craftsman tools refused to keep the excusivity agreement.. and the death of Sears then a formality..

I always went to Sears for tools and power equipment, but when Home Depot and Lowe’s came along I bought all that kind of stuff there instead because of better selection and prices. Sears should have started selling online and reduced the size and number of their brick and mortar stores when online sales really took off. When they paired up with K-Mart it was like watching a slow motion fall off a cliff, much like what happened to Radio Shack with the cell phones and crap you could get anywhere else. Demand shifted and they just couldn’t (or didn’t want to) change.

Sears still would've been thriving fine in the age of the Internet like Amazon (After all they were a catalog at first) and big giants like Walmart and Target if they haven't hired Eddie Lampert as CEO. Since he's been in charge he has done nothing but destroyed the whole legacy of the company. Making the worst decision as possible and walking away with millions in his pocket.
