This is a movie reaction to my first time watching Remember the Titans, released in 2000 and directed by Boaz Yakin. Starring Denzel Washington as a high school football coach, this movie hit me in the feels and also brings racism to the forefront. All the high school kids were great and I'm still shook by seeing a young Ryan Gosling. Ronnie was my fave with Julius and Gerry being close behind. Make sure to stick around to the end of this video for my full thoughts and review and thank you so much for watching! Let me know YOUR thoughts in the comments below!

A classic movie that holds a special place in my heart because I knew all the real people the movie depicts. I was a senior at T.C. when those events happened. Some old-timers don’t like the movie because it takes great liberties with the facts, but most of us love it because it is great drama with an important lesson. Julius died just a year or two ago after spending many years traveling around the country, giving inspirational talks on race relations. Some truths and untruths: Alexandria was not a southern hick town but a cosmopolitan, metropolitan suburb of 110,000. T.C. had been integrated since 1965 and at the time of the events (1971) was 30% Black. Hammond (Yoast’s school) had just two Black students because it was in the rich end of town, and G.W., in the poor end, was 60% Black. Race was not the main issue at T.C.; school rivalry was the issue, due to the merging of the three schools. Boone was not new to the school. He had been assistant coach at T.C. for two years preceding the events, and he was my P.E. teacher in his first year, when I was a sophomore. I liked Boone a lot and had a good relationship with him even though I was not a football player (I was varsity cross-country and track). As most people know, Bertier’s first car accident was not as shown. It actually occurred in the post season, but the movie changed it for dramatic purposes. T.C.’s hardest game was not in the State Championship, but in the regular season, 21-16 versus Marshall. T.C. had 9 shutouts in 13 games. I saw all the regular season games. Oddly, the team’s best star was not in the movie; he was a running back who led the state in yards and touchdowns. Yoast was one of the best coaches in the state at the time, and there was widespread resentment over Boone’s selection as head coach. It is true that the training camp at Gettysburg transformed the team, and students were marveling over it when they came back. Boone was a hard-driving coach as depicted, but he had a great heart for the game and for his athletes. Singing among the Black athletes (including some basketball players) was a longtime tradition at T.C, usually done in the locker room. The players were allowed to wear their jerseys in school at any time, and they actually acted as a calming influence as depicted briefly in the film. I witnessed an incident where a player used moral suasion and school spirit to stop a fight that was starting. My favorite true thing in the movie is an event I witnessed: Ron Bass’s arrival. It actually occurred at T.C. in the first week after training camp. I was with the cross-country team, warming up at the end of the track straightaway. At the other end, a fancy car drove up the ramp from the parking lot and onto the track. Everyone was amazed; cars weren’t supposed to do that. Ron (with very long hair) and a military officer in uniform (his father) got out of the car and talked to Boone, who had stopped practice and came over to them to see what was going on. Later we learned that he was a hippie quarterback from California. He was terrific, both a fine passer and a great runner. He played much more than was shown, and he always kept our opponents guessing. Bertier was a great success in the wheelchair Olympics in the shot put and discus throw. My brother met him in the gym in those later years, and they played ping pong. Bertier won, because he was excellent my brother says.

I grew up in Montgomery, Alabama and saw this movie when I was in 5th grade when it came out. The scene where the Titans overcome the crooked refs and the racist coach had the entire audience standing up yelling and cheering like they were at an Auburn or Alabama game. One of my favorite moments ever in a movie theater

Great reaction. John Q is another great Denzel movie based off a true story. The scene when Julius went to see Gary in the hospital and Gary saying he realized he was only hating his brother, actually cane into play. At Gary's funeral, it was Julius who Gary's mother was leaning on for emotional support. After not wanting to meet him, she actually gained a 2nd son.

Everyone I see has the same reaction to this movie “It’s not a big deeeeal.” It WAS back then, that’s the point of the movie, though. Combatting racism and prejudice from both sides. Because it was such a big deal back then, that’s what makes the movie so beautiful.

🏈 Thank you for the watch. This is a good movie. I'm really not a sports enthusiast. Growing up in St. Louis, when the Cardinals were in the World Series... at that point I'd care about baseball... a little bit. I've never been a football fan. My brother played, and he has a huge scar on his shoulder from where he was seriously injured and had to have reconstructive surgery. Not for me, thank you. And, although I was rather large growing up, and all the coaches wanted me to play, I thanked them, but no-thank-you-ed them. And, in my entire life, I've only seen 4 or 5 games. That said... I'm a sucker for a feel-good sports movie. I like it when the team has problems, and they work together to overcome them. Pretty much all sports movies are like that, and this one is no different. As for the social stuff... It existed back then. I grew up in the late 60's early 70's. By 1970, the little municipality I lived in was as integrated as it could be. As for the hearts of the folks? I've never had hatred in mine. And, I refuse to waste any time around anyone who has hatred in theirs. That's just no way to live. So... there it is. I hope you have a safe trip to wherever you're going. Have fun, and I'll look forward to whatever you watch next.

Hey Kaielle hope your days been bright. I love the growth of Gary and his friendship with Julius and I cried the same scene you did. Well that one and the ending. My 37 year old ancient dinosaur butt still remembers watching this in high school. And Denzel, the Man you couldn't escape him, he was on a roll back then or inspirational sports movies. If you want another Denzel Washington movie, there's Phildelphia, Training Day (if you haven't seen it, it stars someone you're very familiar with) 9.5 Strong sides out of 10. Remember this Reaction. I remember when Ryan Gosling really was a baby lol, young Hercules, Breaker High

I worked at a movie theater as a teen when this movie came out. It is still one of my favorite movies to watch. Denzel is amazing for this role. I hear he is one of the most kindest people to meet in person. He respects his fans. My favorite movie of his son John David Washington is Blackkklansman. John plays the character so well. He has his father’s voice as well. Amazing film if you never seen it

There’s a lot of people out there right here right now they need to watch this movie because apparently we haven’t learned anything. We’re still fighting to fight they were fighting in this movie. We’re fighting it now. Somebody should never be judged by the color of their skin or what religion they are, or what they believe in the only thing they should be judged on is the content of their character.

I know everyone loves this movie. Point of fact and easy to verify, Boone was fired in 1979 after several players and and at least 2 assistant coaches filed allegations of abuse and extreme cruelty. The college tried to save face and tried to cover it up. Please know much of this movie is a fiction or exaggerated and this coach should not be held up in any positive way. Fantastic movie, but the real man and his methods, as well as the reality of his career, are laden with horrible treatment of people. Enjoy the movie for what it is. Especially the amazing acting and message. Just know there's a lot of BS in there. Tyrell didn't exist at all, Virginia HS Hall of Fame didn't exist yet, the school was already integrated since 1965 and several other players were made for the movie. Sorry for such a negative post, but I am tired of hearing people talk so highly of someone and something they know nothing about other than a Disney produced movie. LOVE YOUR REACTIONS!

And based on your ending comment... Racism during this time was absolutely horrible. My parents, aunts and Uncles lived thru this time of being bussed to newly integrated schools and have shared some horror stories with us. The feel good aspects of this movie are great however they were rare in most places in America. And yes the hippies were discriminated against as well during this era so that was accurate

Yes if I remember correctly Joe Biden was against integration and the bussing of African Americans to same schools. He said he didn't want his kids growing up in a racial jungle. Kamala Harris brought that up to him in the democratic primary in 2020 saying that one of those little girls on the bus was her. He just dropped his head and stayed silent. I mean... what do you say to that. I bet it was an awful experience for everyone who had to go through that. 😢

Love this movie! It is amazing - so good. And of course, your reactions are always great. All that said, this so very VERY loosely based on a true story. The players and those involved have pointed out the historical innacuracies many times. But it wouldn't have made for as entertaining of a film. Jerry Bruckheimer has said multiple times he's a film maker, not a historian.

Just to clarify one scene: when Yoast refers to carrying his sins to his grave, he wasn't saying Boon was responsible for the brick incident, he was referring to the public statements made afterwards. Yoast is a Christian man, and for all his faults, he still promoted that life, and you're supposed to turn the other cheek of you're true to your word as a Christian. Calling the perpetrators out on TV is not following that promise Christians make. So that's why Yoast said what it is he said

I would say that the racism in the movie was heavily toned down but done in a way that did a good job of conveying the atmosphere. I played high school in the 90s in the north east and you wouldn't believe the amount of racist bs spewed on the field from all white suburban teams directed at my inner city team. It was truly wild in the 90s so I could only imagine how bd it was a few decades earlier.

These "based on a true story" movies always hit a little harder than others, whether we're talking about a sports movie, a war movie, or just a drama. This movie is strange to me because even though Denzel Washington gets top billing, he isn't what I remember about this movie. It's the players and all their bonding and eventual comradery that takes center stage here. And having been through the same situation (though much younger), when Bertier is first on screen after his accident, talking to his brother, it's always a punch in the heart. That's a terrifying moment and a huge obstacle to wrap your head around. His reaction was MUCH better than mine. Sports movies have a special kind of magic to them. 🏈 I don't like watching sports. Like... at all. But somehow, I've seen and fallen in love with well over a dozen sports movies. Hollywood even managed to keep me fascinated by the NFL draft for a two-hour movie, and even made a movie about baseball statistics exciting somehow. Very few of my most favorite sports movies have been reacted to that I've seen, so I may have to suggest them on your form thingie. Is there a list of what has already been suggested somewhere? Or do we just suggest everything and let the form sort it out? Hope your vacation is going great! ✌🤓

Thanks for your thoughts! As for the form, it's intentional that nobody sees what has been suggested! On my end I can obviously see what has been suggested by more than one person, but for you all I think it's more fun that you don't know as then nothing can influence you and you can just put through everything you want to!

I always caution folks to do the best you can to not jump to judgements about history based on what you all are told, let alone a Hollywood movie. (Maybe should say especially a hollywood movie as they have a tendency to promote their agenda whatever it is at the moment) There is no doubt about the stain of racism on history. As this movie reveals I would say most racism is not exactly based in hate. Please don't misunderstand hate is definitely there but its more ignorance as shown in this movie. It marinates in ignorance and I mean that term literally not as some kind of slight. It is very easy to look at someone in a time that was not ours and make judgements. What were people taught as they were raised etc.. At the age of 58 it is very humbling to learn something that you had believed all your life was not correct! Believe me I learn things all the time. :) We are all works in process! For me I like to say God is not done with me yet! As get off my soapbox I want to also clarify I did not see any of the things I talked about in your reaction. It was a great reaction. I grew up some ignorance about race in my family. My step Dad was racist no doubt about it. I had a friend who happened to be black and I am white we played football all though Jr High and high school. He was the best man at my wedding. They just had to deal with it! :)

I have to say, race aside for the moment, they did kind of do Coach Yost a little dirty. Maybe what they could have done is bring in Coach Boone as the ASSISTANT coach instead.

I was curious why they didn't include the reason Bertier died so I looked it up. Turns out it was a car wreck. Can you imagine? The thing that changed your life forever ended up being the same thing that ended your life. As cliché as it is, life really is stranger than fiction.

Great reactions really enjoying them “Prejudice” is always bad in all forms and dangerous when labelled “positive”. No generation should pay for the sins of the father…thx again 😊🇬🇧👍

You know how much I enjoy your reviews. The thing is, I don't have the money to subscribe for Patreon. The best sports movies I can recommend to you, that I would LOVE to see your reactions to are 42: The Jackie Robinson Story, Glory Road (College Basketball.) and The Express: The Ernie Davis Story. And if you think Field Of Dreams qualifies...

Great reaction to such a great movie! I remember the days when these kinds of attitudes were not unusual. A lot of them were leftover attitudes from a previous generation. Thankfully, when I was a teen in the 80s, even though we still had pockets of ridiculous racism, most of us were surprised to encounter any of the racism that was prevalent in the earlier eras. I have been and remain good friends if not as close as we once were (mainly due to geographical distances and family/job demands on time for many of us) with the friends I made in my teens of all colors, creeds, and genetic backgrounds. It was a golden age of racial harmony, or at the least a willing tolerance, that has been lost in this age where our so-called leadership and so-called icons turn everything into a race war. I miss the days when we were teens and we could all just hang out together, act like idiots together, laugh and have a good time and enjoy being friends. I don't see much beyond fear and anger in relations today and it makes me sad.

I hear you, it's one of the downsides to doing reaction content. The copyright system will pick up like 6 seconds of a copyrighted song if it wants to, so it's easiest for me to muffle it all.
