By A LOT of people actually. In 2005 Messi was barely known and Freddy Adu was everywhere. It took some time for Lio to get to the top and going as far back as 2008 Messi had already surpassed all expectations of where he would get and by 2012 he became the player of the tenty first century from which all players since have been and will be mesured over the next 100 years or so. That's why such preposterous comparison seems so ludicrously laughable now but it wasn't so in 2005.

He was NEVER better than Messi. The difference between them is, Messi stayed grounded and humble (up until now) even with all the pressure, hype, and fame. Adu on the other hand, started becoming a spoiled, lazy kid who wants to feature on every tv commercials, parties, red carpets, etc. instead of working hard to develop his talent. If he had gone to a European academy, he could've been a better player than what he is now. But his full potential wouldn't still be better than the 'worst' Messi.

@Jonathan23426 жыл бұрын
Americans generally want to think that they are dominant in every sport. So as soon as a player shows any promise, many people in the media want to elevate the accomplishment and, in turn, over-hype the player before they have even proven anything at an international level. A little secret, there is nothing in North America that is even close to the level of European soccer development. It is up to the American public to reserve judgement on these players until they have proven themselves against the top world leagues or World Cup. Otherwise you are not being fair to the player

Completely agree. We're looking for a miracle player instead of putting the work, changes, and development (players, media, academy systems, grassroots exposure/awareness/cultivation of already existing pockets of passionate fan bases) over time to churn out consistently good players that can thrive in any league. That takes time; The US doesnt seem to be patient enough - or willing enough to change how the game is played, seen, grown, exposed, or built upon by humbly accepting that "The American Way" ain't gonna work in Football/Soccer.
@Agee16 жыл бұрын

@FootPaulerBTS6 жыл бұрын
The big issue with football in America is that there's only one professional division which means no competition for the top players. this is because unlike England, spain, france, and other European countries which are much smaller, America is massive. this means it is very difficult to fund and sponsor teams to travel around the US to play eachother which is why competition usually stays local. In England, it would only take at the most 7hrs to travel from one side of the country to the other. gas cost would be no more then $300 for there and back. In America, from Maryland to California driving would probably take about 2 days of non-stop driving. thats too much time which means the only way to reasonably travel would be plane. that turns a $300 trip into a $3000+ trip just for transport alone. thats alot of money to put into a local youth team or lower division mens team every week or even month for travel and its alot of extra time and preparation.

the problem is that some players at pulisic's age are ridiculously good and already a star at their club. Many have sacrificed their youth and became world class. sitting pretty in a club with a 'GOOD ACADEMY' does nothing, you need to be a guaranteed starter by 22-24 or the dream is over since strikers usually hit their peak at 26-29 some can do it way earlier and thats what pulisic is competing against. Its extremely difficult.

A Nicolas Millan was rated better than everyone mention here on football manager and he was about Adu age or younger playing professionally. It happens some can't admit it because Messi is the best and Adu can't get consistent playing time anywhere.

Reason of messi's success is that he is super humble and down to earth. He was also hyped during his early days as he would destroy big names in training. Even today after all success and clearly one of the greatest of all time, his attitude is same as before. Its not adu's fault either, it natural tendency to get carried away by the fame at teenage. Its just that leo messi was and is exceptional.

It's got nothing to do with being humble and down to earth. It's ability... Adu may have been slick with the ball - I'm sure sure he could have held held his own against every street kicker in Europe. But he never grasped professional football. Nobody ever taught him.... And even if he had been taught at an Academy, you can't expect to make it to a high level european club. The relatives, managers and media put it in his head that he could expect it though.

Pulisic is overrated because he is the only American who plays in a big European team now. Those in Germany already say the English kid Sancho is much better and doesn't get anywhere near the hype because he is English. Pulisic is hyped because the the quality of American players has gone down. In the 1990s most of the Americans played in big European teams.

@JonathanRodriguez-nz9nw6 жыл бұрын
+The DTR imagination exacto, que risa hasta lo de este video. Fue la prensa que lo infló, semejante que a Pulisic. Ahora Pulisic tiene algo de calidad, pero no de una estrella internacional
@TheDTRimagination6 жыл бұрын
Pulisic juega en Europa ya con eso logro mil veces más que Adu así de simple, es como si en México dijeramos era Cesar Villaluz mejor que Messi? pues obviamente no jajaja

has nobody heard of Bojan Krkic?? This dude scored around 900 goals in his youth barely challenged by anyone and his first goal came from a messi assist yet for some reason he never made it to the very top. Footballers can go awfully off track.

I remember in the late 90s there were two kids that were hyped as next maradonas, I cant remember their names. We got messi because he was living in spain were he was one more of the kids at la masia, he was respected indeed as a great talent, but he was not expected to be a god by a whole country. Had messi lived in argentina, I wonder if his talent would not had been developed because of the hype

If Adu was that good, AC Milan or Juve or Madrid would have signed him, not a team in MLS. He was, he is, not that good.
@dontdoittoyoself67866 жыл бұрын
bangroji Inter Milan was interested but his mother wanted him to get his education in the US and didn't want him overseas because of his age. Sir Alex Ferguson was interested when he was about 17 but there was visa issues.

Pulisic will be great. He is already part of a good club. MLS needs to change to a competitive league.

Like many African born footballers, Adu does not have an accurate birth certificate. The reason he did well for his age was most likely due to the fact that he was probably at least 5 years older than he claimed

Maybe before then. Not now. Is more controlled by both sides. For 3xample my cousin was friend of Obafemi Martins and they have always laugh of him telling him that he has like 3/4 years more than the age in his birth certificate. 🤣

It's sad we haven't had a hyped up player until Pulisic, which took awhile. Maybe Freddy Adu wasn't that good to begin with...

He was good younger but too much pressure and sometimes it is how you keep yourself at the top that matters.

Now we know what to do with pulisic. If he have a good game. Compare him with cr7 and messi. If he score say he is better than messi. If he score and have assist. Do pulisic>messi+cr7. Do this in his fb. Twitter ans insta. But if u got a chance to see him live. Please bring banners with messi and cr7 kissing his feet. We must help him become the next adu.

In 2005, Leo Messi had already played 9 games including 1 in the Champions League, scored 1 goal with FC Barcelona, one of the best teams in the world. Meanwhile, he played 5 games with Argentina, one of the best national teams in the world. How can you compare Freddy Adu with him ??

Landon Donovan was the real deal. He had a finishing touch that is not common even among professional players. He produced tremendously for the USA; bagging goals and providing assists left and right. And, the USA squad wishes he was still in his prime. We have not been the same without him. I would go as far as to say that we don't know how far we could have gone in WC 2014. Klinsman made the decision to keep Donovan off the squad. His reasons had nothing to do with the player's quality. Adu never got to that level.

Coaches and teams need to learn from these players. Instead people pile on Adu when he never said he was Pele. The likes of Fabio Paim or Nicolas Millan all of them were extremely talented. They were kids and take way too much blame.

As a lot of players born in Africa, Adus real age was a mystery, and for so long he played against kids, he looked great.So soon he played against adults, he was gone... Fredi Adu age is probably 4 to 5 years higher than what he claims to be..
