These were 100% my biggest obsession from 2011-2013. I cannot overstate how avid I was at collecting them! I wish I knew what happened to them… I had like 50 or so hamsters and so many play sets. My family and I even threw a full-on birthday party for my Shamrock toy, because all the hamsters came with unique birthdays. I had my parents baking an actual cake for a robo-rodent. Also, the quest for zhu is one of those so-bad-it’s-good movies. The highlight by far was Mazula (the giant reptile villain lady). She was voiced by Kathleen Barr, one of my favourite voice actors. My sister and I still quote Mazula’s ridiculous dialogue to each other all the time

8:52 the reason that the unreleased zhu-lantis pets where in regular packaging might be because they were early prototypes and were using regular boxes as a placeholder, but were likely canceled before original packaging was ever designed. this could also be why they look so weird

Bruh, Zhu Zhu pets Wild Bunch sets was like my absolute favorite as a kid. I absolutely LOVED that one specific collection and I have no idea why. A skunk, a hedgehog, a raccoon, and a pink rabbit in this big treehouse all just seemed like an exceptionally neat direction to go toward from the hamster ordeal. I didn’t even know Fluffy a white rabbit had anything to do with it. I thought it was in a different generation. (Let alone did I know that the wild bunch had more than 4 members.) Too bad I didn’t hear about “Zhu-Fari.” I WOULDVE LOOOOOVED that lion, Jack.

This was within the first year of them premiering, so the hype was insane, and the Lost Zhu Zhu Pet incident was the last straw that led the school to ban them entirely.

Both my little sisters have a Zhu Zhu pet each from back in the day, and by some miracle, they're still going. They may have hair stuck in the wheels, but by god their batteries still have juice after 10 years! I guess that's a good thing, because hamsters aren't allowed in New Zealand as they're considered an invasive species; so for a lot of kids at the time, they were the next best thing. Also, I didn't realize that Cepia was also behind Cats Vs. Pickles and spinoffs. They're more like bean bags/hackey sacks than a Squishmallow, though they do have these large, long plushies that have similar Squishmallow qualities. There's a pickle design that is based off of Hailey's comet and my gosh it's so pretty; I'd love to own it someday but the large ones are pretty expensive. Lol.

I had Zhu Zhu pets the commercials convinced me. Getting them to turn off was impossible without taking out the batteries. We would be them away in what was our playroom atm. That room is connected to a room that I think 2 of my sister's shared at that point. They would both hear the noise of the wheels of the toys go off throughout the night. It was a pretty interesting and cute show. I remember the episode where Frankie and her mom go out to buy cookie dough for the cookies and the blue hamster eats the chips. Frankie says that if they don’t have chips her team will lose. The hamsters then head to the supermarket to get the chips and trash the entire place and Frankie and her mom leave before they can and the episode immediately ends without any hint if they managed to make it back home before frankie or not.

Quick point to bring up in history: I think these go back further than you’d think too. Zhu zhu pets are listed as being released in 2009, but I remember reading either in a pamphlet that came with one of my pets, or in one of the ds games that they were originally released as ‘go-go pets’, and rebranded at some point (I thought the sheet said 2006 but it must have been 2009) to zhu zhu pets ‘because they don’t just go, they zhu zhu zoom!’. I know back in the day when I was looking to get my hands on some of those exclusive zhus I looked at eBay, and found a few listings for the hamsters listed as ‘go go pets’, so I do think it was real. When I googled to confirm it before leaving this comment, I found a page on the zhu zhu pets fandom wiki detailing another tv show, called go go pets, that apparently ran from 1988 to 1991? I don’t know anything about that but that’s another rabbit hole to look into about these guys. They may have lasted even longer than you thought you thought

Ok so I really wanted Zhu Zhu pet when I was a kid and begged my parents. I remember going to Toys R Us and getting one and being so excited. From looking at pictures I think it was Scoodles. For some reason soon after I developed an extreme irrational fear of toys that could talk or move by themselves. Like severe anxiety. I couldn’t explain it. So uh, fun fact: There was actually a planned sequel for the movie starring the Kung Zhu line. The movie was fully completed and released in Portugal, however not in the US. The reason being is that the show was premiered against Cepia’s demands and Cepia had put a lawsuit against universal studios, the people who distributed the film in the US. There previously was only the Portuguese version posted here on KZbin but an English version has surfaced about six months ago

My mom always used to get cheap discounted ones and she once got the zhuzhu princess videogame that came with a hamster princess toy (I forgot her name) and the game was SO SO FUN like genuinely. I had a Zhu Zhu hamster when I was a kid (I freakin loved that thing!!!🌟) but one day I left it on this pole thing next to my house and left it there for a while (like a god dang idiot!😤) and when I went back outside to get it, it was gone.☹️Someone probably stole it or something, and I never told my parents because I thought they’d be mad at me. (Really relating to the Garry come home cover now 😑)

Ohmygod I just got FLASHBACKS to working at Toys R Us the year these lil buddies came out and it was CHAOS. I remember the slow descent into all out anarchy in our halls as Christmas season approached and frenzied crowds of parents almost fought eachother for Zhu Zhu pets, we sold out MONTHS before December even hit!! The desperation of a parent a week from Christmas saying something like "my daughter NEEDS Numnums!" While frantically looking through our almost empty displays of tiny skirts for robotic hamters still haunts me. 🤣 It was almost as bad as the year Skylanders came out, that one was BRUTAL 😳 Loved setting up the displays for these lil friends though, they were adorable and their names always cracked me up. Shoutout to Chunk, Scoodles, and Mr. Squiggles ✌️

I had a couple Kung Zhu as a kid. One of them ended up in my toy box and even when it was turned off, made noises at night. It scared me. I'm fairly certain it was the black and blue one you showed at the start of the video because those noises evoked a deep terror in me that I hadn't thought of in years.
