I was in 5th grade too. I remember kids getting sent home one after the other and my school never told us what happened. They wanted us to find out from our parents. I was shocked when I got home and turned on the tv. RIP to all those who lost their lives that day.

Our high schools turned on live tv and we all watched second plane hit all while everyone continued chatting barely watching or caring 😢😐

😦 What was wrong with them? I've never previously heard of anyone not caring as you describe. Did the teachers not discipline them to be still and pay attention? That is disturbing behavior!

Third grade for me, went to school on-base (Dad was in the Air Force). I remember we were returning from "Flight Reading", at around maybe 9:30 AM, which was basically a classroom where we read a book of our choice. Our teacher had the television on, and I remember seeing these two tall buildings, one was on fire, and we were all confused. Seeing as that all of us kids were military brats, one of my classmates was from New York, and she mentioned that it was the World Trade Center, but none of us understood why it was on fire. After a few moments, I remember my teacher turning off the television and we resumed class like normal. That night, I remember watching the news with my sister and parents. My dad, being in the service, was stone-faced and angry... My mom was incredibly concerned, and my sister and I were confused. At first, I thought it was a movie, and said something along the lines of, "Cool explosions...", thinking they were special effects. My dad snapped back, "No. That is NOT cool... It was a real attack today". My Dad was always stern, but I realized then how serious it was. Next morning, he left for work early. My sister and I were taken to school at around 8:00 AM, and we were guided into the gymnasium to wait, because none of the teachers were at the school yet. After a few hours of watching a movie or so and socializing with my classmates, we were told to pack up and head to the exit, because we had to go home much earlier. It turned out that every US military base in the world went into THREATCON/FPCON Delta, essentially meaning a total lockdown. None of the teachers or staff who didn't live on-base could gain entry onto the base. I remember the next morning, the 13th of September, was very somber and confusing, and the teachers tried to explain to us what happened in a way that made sense to a bunch of third graders. A few short months after 9/11, my Dad would end up deploying overseas to the desert. I wasn't a stranger to him leaving home for a while, but this time felt different, with 9/11 fresh in our minds, and with the bad people out there that we knew wanted to hurt my Dad. I remember him telling me, "You're the man of the house now, so take care of your mom and sister" before he left in his DCU's. He came back safe, but as I grew older, each deployment would still hit hard on us, and he'd tell me the same thing, "You're the man of the house, so take care of your mom and sister". Thankfully, he'd been safe his entire 20 years in the military, and enjoys a quiet, retired life with my Mom. Some of my peers weren't so lucky though... My heart weeps for those families. My heart also weeps for the victims and their families involved in the tragedies of September 11, 2001.

The first hit before I woke up, the second hit on the way to school. Most students weren’t there as everyone was afraid that the entire country was under attack.

I was in the 2nd grade and that morning was normal. I was getting ready for school and almost done. My mom finds me and in a stern voice she tells me “ you and your sister are not going anywhere today “. I’m confused because normally I always had school. Like literally I had food poisoning and was at school. I was excited because I can watch cartoons!!!! I searched the television channel by channel and all I saw was a burning building. Then I saw two burning buildings. Saw another burning building. Then I saw suicide, and another, and another. Lastly a white cloud and I said out loud at 7, this is going to change the world.

Nothing compares to 9/11. Not even covid. 9/11 was different.

I was in first grade. We were all required to watch it on live tv. I still don't understand why we had to watch it. Especially considering we were always looking forward to the tv being on... something wasn't right.

My condolences from Afghanistan 🇦🇫 Feeling sad for all those who died in 9/11 and may God bless them. But don't forget, it's US who its own citizens and killed millions Afghan citizen. Love and peace from a peaceful afghan citizen.
