A stirring speech by the senior Senator about a day in history we should never forget. Thank you Senator Inouye!

You can't fault him for loving to serve his country. There are no term limits in the U.S. Senate and if Hawaii wanted to replace him they would have done so. I don't understand why you discriminate against someone because of their age. But I'm glad you acknowledge & respect his service. He planned to run in 2016 and there is no doubt he would have won. He too like Robert Byrd is gone now, but I see no shame in living a life well lived. 53 years in Congress serving the state he loved, Hawaii.

Longevity in office does not always equal clinging incompetence. Inouye is proof. He kept power for 50 years because he was loved and respected by his people in Hawaii. Unlike many who seek office, Inouye was a true public servant and one of the old style politicians who could work will all sides of an issue. He was tough but honest, dignified and honorable. Who among the current politicians fits this bill. At least for today, the ignorant should shut up!

How do you explain that? Daniel Inouye was a decorated WWII vet, a loyal American, and a fine representative.

I look up to the Nisei Veterans Of WWII. One of the inspirational stories of being American

Strongly agree! I think it'd be great if more people knew that history. And then the post-war legacy is pretty powerful too.

How sad how we Americans forget such a date that lived in infamy. I'm 50 yrs now and born, raised in Hawaii. I've been taught that this date 7 Dec 1941 indeed is a date I can't forget. So is 11 Sept 2001. How shameful our children take these dates for granted. For me I will keep remembering these dates and will ensure my children and grandchildren will. I didn't serve over a quarter century in the Army for nothing. ✌🏼🙏🏼❤🇺🇸

An amazing man, and national hero. He could have talked about himself, and the battles he led in Europe, and he repeated, life ending injuries which he somehow he survived, and more than that, he completed the task of destroying three German bunkers in the process. His right arm is still, because he has no right arm. He talks about not setting the Constitution aside yet we are so far astray from it, because people would rather get their "information" from comedians Jon Stewart and Mr.Colbert.

"The blast covered Inouye with shrapnel and shredded his right arm to the point where it was barely still attached. This, however, failed to stop him. Inouye simply looked down at his useless arm (which was still clutching a hand grenade), pried the grenade out of it with his left hand, and lobbed it underhand right into the dumbfounded German's face from about 15 feet away. The results weren't pretty. "-badass of the week

Technically we are a democratic republic or a representative democracy. Republics without democracy are countries like ancient Rome or modern China.

Technically, we are also a Federal Republic, which is also a bit more complex than a Constitutional Republic. Overall they're all overlapping terms. England does fine without a written Constitution. I made the comment because you said we're not a democracy but a republic. Your comment is incorrect since we are neither solely a democracy nor solely a republic. I was just pointing it out since a lot of people either incorrectly refers to the US as solely a republic or solely a democracy.

There's no denying he has given incredible, dedicated service to the country and Hawaii. However, he's nearly 88 and he deserves time to retire and have some time for his own interests and family. Similarly, he should also have the grace to allow someone else to enjoy the honour of representing Hawaii in the Senate. It would be a shame if he died in office like Robert Byrd.

Yada yada yada. How about the present, why did you vote in favor of: This week, the United States Senate passed S. 1867 also known as the National Defense Authorization Act including sections 1031 and 1032 which authorize the military to arrest and indefinitely detain American citizens without trial or charge.
