They did have antibiotics.. They just weren't the greatest at treating stuff. She got sick over a period of time. The studio doctor didn't know months previously she had influenza and had a sunburn. So, when she started complaining of symptoms, he basically told her to rest.

You didn't add that she was raised a Christian Scientist and when she became ill that her mother would not summon a doctor. I do believe that it was Gable that finally got her out of the house but by then it was too late. Her husband was also very abusive, and some say his beatings didn't help her kidneys.

I think she died at home, but William Powell,her lover, did try to help but was blocked by her mother . Harlowe's husband, Paul Berne, had committed suicide in 1932. Jean died in 1937. She died of lupus- induced kidney failure, nothing to do with him.

All starts with Strep throat, or Scarlet Fever or Impetigo, and no antibiotics back then. It became Rheumatic fever which damages organs like the heart and kidneys. Singer Bobby Darin had bouts of Rheumatic Fever repeatedly as a young child; the RF damaged his heart.

My brother got Rheumatic fever as a kid and they couldn’t diagnose it for so long. He was sick for months and started getting rashes on his joints. Finally he was put on a medicine for it and it cleared up. It did indeed start with strep throat, which my mom thought was just the flu.

It’s sort of like how we look at old pictures of our parents in their high school days and think how much older they looked back then in comparison to how high school kids look now. I’ve thought of how teens in the 80’s looked like adults. I think it’s because of our perception of trends and aesthetics and how we correlate styles and fashion to specific time periods. I’ve seen photos of my mom and dad from when they were 17 years old and thought they looked much older than 17 because we associate that style of fashion to older people now.

I’m going back and watching all of them. I mean what’s fascinating for me is that these women that were the first ones to be in the talkies after the silent films, we’re really trailblazers because they had no frame of reference as to how women should be acting with their voices in film.

They were both known to be very kind to film crews and not at all uppity. Marilyn has severe mental issues, poor thing. She was just unable to cope. Jean did not have mental issues, she died from lupus, an autoimmune disease.

Jean's mother (or 'Mother Jean' as she called herself) was a huge looming figure in her life. As a child, Jean had scarlet fever, which is known for lifelong after effects. Jean's mother didn't believe in modern medicine and refused treatment whenever Jean was sick. In her 20s, Jean went through a series of infections. (Remember, there were no antibiotics or Tylenol at this time.) By age 26, the repeated illnesses had damaged her internal organs so badly, that she didn't have a chance when she got sick again. She went into kidney failure, and died.

Apparently, she still haunts her old house out in Brentwood. According to legend, she warned new tenants through their dreams to rewire an outlet in their bathroom or someone in the house would die in the bathtub of electric shock. Clara Bow is known as the origin of the 'IT Girl' saying (it comes from a film she was in by the same name), and Jean Harlow was the origin of 'Platinum Blonde'. Also that film they were both in Saturday Night Kid is famously lesbian pre-code.

Jean Harlow had what is also called Rheumatic fever which is a misnomer since that's the immune response that occurs after a strep throat or scarlet fever infection that was not properly treated. Group A Streptococcus bacteria cause strep throat and scarlet fever. Since rheumatic fever is an immune response, it is not an infection that can be passed from person to person. Scarlet fever can affect the kidneys and the heart in an untreated episode. There are occasions when penicillin, standard antibiotic prescribed for Strep throat, must be monitored since there are occasions when the patient must undergo several treatments of antibiotic therapy.

Harlowe died from lupus- induced kidney failure ---an autoimmune disease that has nothing to do with bacteria. Also, her mother wouldn't let her see a doctor(Christian Scientist) though she had been ill for months. Rheumatic fever, aka scarlet fever, IS Beta Strep group A in the blood. It can damage the heart, kidneys, and make the joints swell. Rheumatoid arthritis, on the other hand, is a different autoimmune disease , which causes painful swelling of the joints. Jean did not have scarlet fever or rheumatic fever or rheumatic arthritis. She died of lupus. No bacteria involved. Besides, penicillin was invented in 1942, 5 years after Jean's death. It wouldn't have helped her anyway, since she did not have a bacterial infection. FYI, Selena Gomez has lupus, and had lupus- induced kidney failure. She recently had a kidney transplant.

Gable did not love Monroe. He had a wife and a long awaited child on the way. When they filmed " The Misfits" , he was sympathetic to her deteriorating mental condition. But she delayed filming so much from her fears, in that heat, he got aggravated. Gable died before she did.
