I see Joe, Hal Moore and Basil Plumley and every KIA from that horrific battle all gathered in a beautiful, lush field of grass, the sun shining brightly, the air cool with just a hint of humidity. They stand together as they did so very long ago, talking and remembering and sharing their stories. Every occasionally, a barely audible bell rings and General Moore walks gingerly to a very large gate. He's there to welcome yet another one of his men to the Heavens. He'll wait patiently and lovingly for every, single one of them to finally be together as Soldiers again. And young. Joe Galloway told a story and he told it beautifully. He is truly, truly missed!

This was a beautiful and heart-felt tribute to all branches of the service who fought in the Vietnam War. It, too, makes me think of all the lives lost and what they would have contributed to the world if they had lived. The children, wives and Families they left behind. So very heart breaking ! They went to war because they felt it was their duty to go ! This was my Era...I knew several men who came back in coffins...face's I can still see today in my mind. God Bless them all !!!!! :(

What a spectacular, impactful, remarkable life. All Americans, regardless of whether you agree with the Vietnam War or not, should be familiar with his story, and the service and sacrifice of our military personnel during this very bad war so far from home. Read the book We Were Soldiers Once and Young to really learn what it was like, and the heroism and valor of our soldiers, those that came home and those who came home having given the ultimate sacrifice. Hate war but love the American warrior indeed!

I emailed Joe on Sept. 21, 2011 to ask him about the photos used in the movie never actually expecting a reply but being the Gentleman he was he did respond. Here is my question to Joe and his response. ( I will never Delete this email ) RIP Joe Mr. Galloway I always thought the photos used in the movie 'We Were Soldiers' were the real photos that you took during your time documenting the Battle. I just recently found out that is not the case, and that you thought the Producers should have used your real photos. I agree with you, since they were trying to make the movie as realistic as possible, it seems that since you had the real photos available and offering to let them use them they would have jumped at the opportunity. I do have one question for you. In the movie when the actor Barry Pepper is talking to Col. Moore (Mel Gibson) and telling the story about your grandfathers and the shoe store, is that actually true? and did they have the same shoe size? S. Loveless sam: the story about my two great-grandfathers is absolutely true, altho the movie distorted it just a bit. it wasn't a pair of shoes they bought; it was a pair of boots. texas and all that. and it sure as hell wasn't galveston where they bought them; it was the village of franklin, texas, in robertson county in east texas. ggfather sgt. james isham galloway, 4th texas infantry, hoods brigade, lost his left leg charging the guns of the NY Zouaves at the Second Battle of Manassas in Virginia. ggfather James Reid was captured by the Yankees at Cold Harbor and put in a POW camp. because of his youth he was paroled and told to go on home. Instead he went straight back to his unit where he was rewarded by being made the Color Bearer on the eve of the Battle of the Wilderness. Carrying that flag he lasted about two minutes. He lost his right leg and use of his right arm for life. After the war he moved to Texas and bought the farm next to Sgt Galloway. Those two would go to town once a year and buy one pair of boots and split them up. Left out of the store giggling over how they had cheated the shopkeeper out of the sale of two pair of boots.l Enjoyed each other's company so much that Pvt Reid married his daughter Elizabeth off to Sgt Galloway's son, Glidwell Orrell Galloway. They were my grandfather and grandmother. You can't make stuff like that up. rgds joe galloway bayside tx

In memory of Rusty Thurman. He left high school early, depressed, and the draft picked him up and that was it. This is an eloquent statement, and Joe Galloway is a person I admire very much, although I do not agree with all of his observations. By 1967, morale was low. Troops returned with major drug issues and they were stashed away overseas. The shine of the cause in Vietnam had worn off. The initial survery done by Eisenhower in the fifties had given the warning that was not heeded.
