Remembering the Journey: Khanyisa & Lammie 🐘🐑

Travel back in time to 2020, when Khanyisa arrived at HERD after being caught in a snare. Her dedicated carer team was by her side 24 hours a day, but one member truly stands out. Lammie the Legend has been a loyal companion sheep, nurturing young orphans and providing the comfort they need during good and tough times. Khanyisa has grown significantly since then, a journey that wouldn’t have been possible without Lammie’s love 💚

Lammie is indeed a Legend and takes her duties as companion very seriously! She had a good friend in Nungu who passed because she had become old and tired. With Khanyisa leaving the nursery and the loss of Nungu, I was delighted when Sweet Spotty arrived. Lammie has taught Spotty well. These Pedi-sheep are perfect friends for Elephants and Rhino. I think Lammie adored being with Khanyisa and helped with her recovery. So, Lammie The Legend, we Love, Thank and Salute you! 💖🐑💖😘👏👏👏🙏

Lammie 🐑 the legend has always been a faithful companion for Khaynisa 🐘. They have been together from the beginning. Then Nungu 🐑 came and gave Lammie 🐑 a companion as Khaynisa 🐘 healed and started going out for walks with her new elephant 🐘 family. Then came Nandi 🐕. Lammie 🐑 wasn't real fond of her but Khaynisa 🐘 was. I love seeing these throwbacks. Khaynisa 🐘 is a special little elephant 🐘 who beat the odds and had an incredible will to live. I love ❤️ you Khaynisa 🐘. ❤️🐘❤️

I sometimes forget how badly injured Khanyisa was injured when she came to the Herd. Her incredible recovery is a real testament to the wonderful care and love that Adine and the Carers put into her recovery. She is an amazing young girl now and so well integrated into the Herd. Such a journey she's had to get to where she is now. Lammie is such a wonderful asset to these baby elephants. I never thought a sheep and an elephant could be such great companions. Do Khanyisa and Lammie still recognize each other to this day? Just an amazing journey. Khanyisa is so loved by so many and it's such a joy to watch her grow. Wow, this is a video of very young Khanyisa I hadn’t seen. It brings it all back, the struggles, how tiny Khanyisa was and her pain, how hard the work was and the role everybody played, how great the need was for emotional comfort for baby K, and for expert medical care, how deeply vulnerable she was for quite some time and yet what incredible spirit she had and how she loved to be loved by Adine and all the carers. The role Lammie played was so important and critical as well. Look at her now, glorious, savvy, healthy, still so spirited and an integral part of the HERD. It is very moving. I am glad that Lammie has Spotty always on her side now. It's really beautiful to see Khanyisa's earlier days in the orphanage with Lammie, but I somehow feel a little sad watching videos with just the two of them thinking she will be alone when Khanyisa is with the herd. Maybe I also got used to seeing her with Spotty looking after Baby Phabeni. I fondly remember when Phabeni was first introduced to Lundi. Lammie was at the fence seemingly having a stand off with Lundi about who was the baby's mother. Thank you, Lammie, for your legendary maternal love for the ellie and rhino orphans. Companion sheep are amazing! 😍 I find it particularly astonishing that as the elephant & rhino calves grow, their massive size doesn't seem to phase the sheep. They're such sweet & gentle natured animals. I've seen videos at HESC where they have around 6 rhino calves with one companion sheep - you'd think one little sheep amongst all those huge bodies would be intimidating, but he's fine with it & he's very much part of the family! The first time I saw Lammie I was really puzzled because I never had seen such a sheep and moreover a ship which served as surrogate mother to orphan baby Rhinos and Ellies It was so joyful with Little Miss Sunshine when they were playing together or walk in the Bush with Adine, Xander, Khensani or Hermann, Nandi or the tender vigils at the orphanage with the lullabies of Adine or Khensani It was fair when Khanyisa was the whole day out in the Bush with her Ellies Family that Lammie got a friend Nungu who also took care all her life of Rhino or Zebra orphans They both have accomplished miracles for these poor little souls and we are forever grateful for the love and comfort they have brought Lammie especially to our Pink Baby and then to little Phabeni with little Spotty Great addition to the Herd Team We love you Lammie the Legend and you also Spotty ❤️🐑🐃🦏🦓🐑🌈🐑🐕🫶

Ive always said, Khanyisa's ability to survive and thrive had to do with her undeniable ability to accept love from everyone and anywhere. She embraced attention and affection which was so much harder for the Ellies that past. Khanyisa was always, "Oh you want to hug me, Ill hug you too/ ih, you want to chase things, me too". She's still that way. Also, her immediate sense that Timisa was a kid too. I remember her face when she saw Timisa at first. It was, "Hey, you're a kid too!".

The damage inflicted by snares on elephants and any other animal is so horrible to see. How would a poacher feel if his child was playing in the bush and got snared! The pain and injury would also be life threatening to a child. I hope when anyone who sets these snares are caught they are punished to the max. Glad you provided this baby will a living gentle creature to give him comfort. The work you do is a gift to the world. God bless everyone in this video for your dedication. From an 🇺🇸 grandmother
