In 1968, three students at the historically Black South Carolina State College were gunned down by police. But the killings remain relatively unknown. ABC News’ Jade Lawson reports.

I was born and raised in Columbia, SC (not too far at all from Orangeburg) and I don’t remember EVER being taught this in public school!!! That’s so crazy to me. We cannot erase history like this, especially when it pertains to our racist past. Its so sad to see such racial inequality still alive today :(

I know there are many places in the US trying to erase history and many places where they just simply dont teach things that happened and that history books are filled with lies but is it possible that it was taught but that you just dont remember it . I know I dont remember every thing I was taught in school and I have friends who swore that nothing was taught in schools in Ontario about the residential schools across Canada but I went to numerous schools all over Ontario and I remember being taught about it in different grades and in several schools .

My Grand uncle Hampton Smith taught at Claflin and I can remember him telling us about that happening in Orangeburg killings. Oral history is priceless.

I've lived very close to Orangeburg all of my life. I remember being taught about this in school. It was a horrible event. What's even more sad is that the areas near SCSU and Claflin are known now as a hotbed for gang violence and shootings. They happen almost daily. Orangeburg is not a safe town for anyone after dark anymore.
