I left the Nam and 3 days later I was in my moms house in my old room. I sat in the corner and just looked. What the F was I doing here? I was just with my friends now I have no one. I wanted to go back. As sick as it sounds. I’ve never found real friendship or brotherhood again like that. I have friends, but not brothers. We looked at each other and you knew what he was thinking. I’ve been asking why me? Every day since. Why did I make it? What’s so special about me? Nothing. Not a damn thing. I miss my brothers every day

When I arrived from v.n. I felt the same way. But my home friends I didn't want to bother with. Even though 2 served one in the navy subs, other airforce medic i wanted to be alone, not answer any questions or talk. So I took 1 month rnr and was transferred to the 6th fl. The MED. SERVED MY 6YRS AND REUPPED FOR TOTAL 22 YRS. THERE I FOUND MORE BROTHERS.

In 2010 I was in a parking lot walking back to my truck, I saw a young guy limping trying to put a package in his trunk. I went over and said need help? He turned and looked at me and I saw his eyes. I knew that look. Middleast I said? His eyes started tearing up and I said... understand brother I understand. We talked for an hour in that lot. He’s had a tough time of it since. But we talk every week. There’s a bond that connects that reaches across every line whether social, race, it doesn’t matter. We are brothers like no other. Never feel Alone. My best friend in high school Pat Fuller ended up in the Rangers, he didn't come home to his brother, mom and dad, sister and the rest of us. I read a book of collected Vets recollections. It was simply called “Nam”. I guess some of these men may have contributed to it. Good book, well worth a read, and most illuminating. My favourite tale was one lad, newly home, standing in an airport in his uniform, was accosted by a long haired girl, who asked him how many women and children he’d killed, and he calmly replied “nine..where’s your mother at?”

It’s always tough to watch these documentaries. Being a vet myself, I understand where they’re coming from. I came back thinking I was just fine until I had my own ptsd incident and it really opened my eyes. The generation that did not deserve all the hate they were given. So very sad. My dad still can’t talk to me about it and can’t stand fireworks. Hates large crowds like I do so we are looking forward to the zombie apocalypse. Blessings on those who served. Please come and see my grandpa. He was a medic in Vietnam! He's on his last legs. He was shot trying to save another soldier! Still has bullet fragments in his leg to this day. I'd love to see this happen!!! His name is Marvin Lee Cary senior.

How could anyone not cry at the realization about the things that these great soldiers went through all their lives. Their lives were suspended by the time they entered first combat. As one of hem says here, they never regained their souls. They are already in their seventies and, in some very real sense, they are still there in the horrors of battle.

When I came home, stayed put at home for 4 - 5 days, laying around, out in the yard, never called anyone. My mom asked me why haven't I taken a bath in 3 days? Took a shower that night, man, it was damn good! 173rd Airborne, 11B4P 👍

God bless these brave men who fought for their lives. My uncle was there. At Christmas’s eve party he got drunk and told me a story with my dad that I will never forget. I had nightmares for weeks. It was a lot to take in as a 11 year old boy. Hearing the horror stories of war from him. My dad said I think that’s enough for you young man and walked me to my grandma. He said I looked pale from the stories. I won’t repeat what he saw but just know it was extremely horrific.

My grandfather, a green beret, spent 6 months as a POW enduring collective days of torture and starvation. To this day, he has never considered himself a hero. He leaves that title to those who gave their lives for their country.

Imagine growing up under the “greatest generation” that came home as heroes with parades, support, etc. Their children grew up in their footsteps only to return home to the opposite. Can’t believe how awful these veterans must have felt to have “done the right thing” that they were raised to value: military service. That is why I go out of my way to welcome them home decades later. I hate war, but these men were witness to great traumas that were never addressed stateside.

I am a 68 yo Navy Veteran Who salutes every Vietnam Veteran I see

I joined the Army in 1969. I was 17 years old. I was retired on a medical physical disability rating in 1971, I was 19 years old. One day, while on Ft. Sam Houston, just before I retired. I happened to find a soldier standing on the sidewalk. He looked like shit. He looked like he had just come out of the jungle. I immediately stepped up and asked him what the fuck was going on. He looked at me, and said he had just been flown in directly from Vietnam. That he had come in from a patrol and told he was going home, driven to the air base, and put on a plane. Next thing he knew, he was being taken to our unit, the medical holding detachment. I told him to follow me, I took him to our company 1st sargent and we explained the situation. We got him a bed in the Barracks and a shower and new clothes. Then I drove him to our mess hall where he ate and fell asleep at the table. I could not bring myself to wake him up. I explained to the mess hall sargent, and I sat there for 2 hours as he slept. We got his situation corrected and he was soon flying to his real home. I will never forget him standing. Lots of men cycled through Beach Pavillion every day, new wounded coming in, old guys being retired on disability ratings. It never stopped. The wounded never stopped being flown in. Then, 1975. The "war" was "over". We lost. All that was left were thousands & thousands of messed up vets. It was such a waste land of broken bodies & wounded souls. God bless the men & women who served time in Vietnam.

I respect all victims of the American War in Vietnam. The first victims were the naive kids just graduating highschool who believed the lies of our leaders. The second victims were of course the millions of Vietnamese who lost there lives fighting for Independence going all the way back to 1877.

The last man who served in my family was my grand-father who had served in the Wehrmacht from 39-45 and he taught me one thing: War is nothing to crave for, nothing is glorious about war, don't you dare to go to the Army and neither my dad or I went to the Army.
