Күн бұрын

In 1994 Alton Towers opened one of the most magical dark rides to ever be seen in the United Kingdom. Toyland Tours took guests on a boat ride through a wonderful Toy Factory, filled with teddy bears, flying Elephants and even Sonic The Hedgehog! In this video I take a look back on the history of this Alton Towers classic along with sharing my favourite moments and memories from this incredible dark ride.
This video is part of our Remembering Rides series here on Theme Park Worldwide. In this series of videos I'll be talking all about a variety of rides, attractions and theme parks that are no longer with us. I'll also be looking into the history of these attractions along with sharing my favourite memories!

I was about 10 years old when I first went on this, back in 1996. I had to say I didn't like it, so I looked cool in front of my mates, but deep down, I loved it. Totally agree, Shawn. They should have never gotten rid of it. That soundtrack is absolutely classic. Cheers for the video.

Great video Shawn. I'm in my 40s so I can remember Around the world in 80 days as well. It was a great ride , similar to It's a Small World. It had some nice touches of its own such as Egypt being hot and the artic area blasting you with cold air. The entrance station had a wonderful atmosphere. I was a bit too old for the target audience for Toyland Tours when it opened but it was a great dark ride. It was a huge mistake to replace it with the chocolate factory ride. We lost one of the best original dark rides in this country. The current dungeon is a poor replacement, the park needs more family rides not a scary paid extra attraction. Such a shame Toyland Tours wasn't kept going with proper maintenance maybe some additional modern effects mapping. Thanks for the memories with this video.

Alton towers in the late 1990s was truly magical - it might not have had as may coasters, but it had great dark rides, so much live entertainment, a variety of themes, rides for all ages including lots of flat rides, a proper mascot and even a parade.

What a wonderful trip down memory lane, I found it quite emotional watching that. I remember loving that ride right up into my teens. And I’d forgotten some of the whacky set pieces and that music! The days when Alton Towers really was a magical day out. Still awesome but in the 90s it had a certain sparkle. Nostalgia, that is! I also remember Around the world in 80 days. It had a lot of smell pods, a very distinctive soundtrack, the Paris moulin rouge scene was particularly iconic as well as the Siam one. We used to do that and the spooky walk through Doom & Sons one after the other as they were all in the ‘Talbot St’ area. Anyway, a terrific video, and that will take me onto my thoughts for your Alton Towers predictions/wishlist!

I remember when it was 'around the world in 80 days'! I'm getting old! One thing I remember is really well is that in the room at the end of the ride (where the pink hippo was) they used to display models of upcoming rides. You can just make this out on a couple of KZbin videos.

Out all of Alton Towers’ 4 dark rides throughout every decade, Toyland Tours was their absolute banger. I might pretty much say that it was Alton Towers’ “based” dark ride. Plus, Sonic was in there too.

I'm not joking, when I was a kid I was absolutely terrified of Toyland Tours, there was a giant elephant that gave me nightmares. I've been back to Alton Towers many times since it scared me as a kid but was always to scared to go back on even as a teenager. 😂 Seeing this video has made me kinda sad I never went back to face my fears, seems to have made loads of people very happy and was totally nowhere near as scary as my 5 year old brain had made it 😂

While yall stuck at home, allow me to tellyou about some of the park me and my friend visited in our Eastren Europe trip, so you'll learn about them and maybe go support them: 'Górski Park Równica': Górski Park Równica caught our eye for their Coaster named toboggan run. It is an alpine coaster that was built in 2006 by the German manufacturer Wiegand. It has a modest length of 575 meters. The toboggan run is located in Poland, not far from the border with the Czech Republic. 'Ski area Mosty u Jablunkova': Later in our East Europe trip, we crossed the border from Poland to the Czech Republic and so we ended up in Ski area Mosty u Jablunkova . Here you can find the Bobová Dráha Alpine Coaster (Bobová Dráha is Czech for toboggan run). This alpine coaster built by Wiegand in 2004 has a length of 650 meters. 'Veľká Rača - Oščadnica': From the Czech Republic we crossed the border to Slovakia where we ended up in Veľká Rača - Oščadnica . Here too you can find a toboggan run with the Bobová Dráha . It was built in 2005 by Wiegand. The alpine coaster has a nice length with a track of 1310 meters. Mind you, you should take a chairlift to the alpine coaster touch .

I always thought there was something slightly sinister about this ride, which is weird given its toy theme. Only Alton Towers could achieve that.

I think another channel was just talking about this very ride last week I think. Anyway it was about the sonic the hedgehog animatronic and how such bad shape it ended up in. It was restored mostly minus the operating logos as they couldn’t be found. Currently I think sega hq has it somewhere in Japan in a warehouse although exact whereabouts are unknown. The whole video was about video game animatronics I think from Fasspass facts.

Toyland Tours does look similar to Bubbleworks, but I would rather had rode Toyland Tours than Bubbleworks. A lot better theming.

@@GarryWilliams555 It wasn't always Duel, it used to be just called The Haunted House Back in the 90s, which alot of people still prefer over. I mean, The ride is turning 30 next year, so could we see the potential of The Haunted House returning?

@@louiswright8282 yeah I never got to do the original sadly. I would like to see the ride made a look scarier and the guns removed. Keep the exterior and the queue the same though cus thats perfect.

Just like around the world in 80 days toyland tours was a dark boat ride and use the same ride vehicles and layouts to the former attraction, the ride took guest on a tour of a fun filled colourful toy factory, when guest entered the queue there will be greated by a giant river boat with toys solders looking over them as they board their boat, the ride was split up into segment which included the think tank when ideas for toys come to life, this portion will featured multiple toys being build and tested, including robots taking statistics, teddy bear bieng stuff and boncy castle with actual bonce on trampolines, this segment also featured the ride official mascot Ele coppter a mix between a elephant and a helicopter, the next segment bath time will take guest into a bathtub and showcase verios bath toy with special lighting to make it look like guest we're under water, the next segment is the most popular segment sonic the Hedgehog the segment features large glowing ring, spinning art graphics and a animatronic of sonic controlling a giant Sega mega drive and a master system gaming console along with screen in the room showing game play footage of sonic 3,sonic spinball and sonic CD,the next segment featured a castle hosting a large party for toys. Which featured toys solders welcome to guest into the castle. The next scene featured large props of various party foods presented and a band full of stuff animals. Hippos dressed as ballerina and various others sight gags. The ride ride end and guest exit back it was then known of makebalife section of the park.one of the things that the ride remeber for is it theme song which it composed by grand smart a compless comppse composer created the music for various ride for the UK sunch as nemesis a rollor coster at Alton Towers and bubbleworks now a defunct ride at chessington world of adventures. The soundtrack for the ride would be released on CD and sold at the park in the mid 1990s. All tho the ride was popular from its run. Its anost in the mid 2005 that the ride will be closed to make way Charlie and the Chocolate Factory witch will open on the following year. As the name applies this ride will be themed around the classic Roald Doal.Toyland tours is close on June 207h. The ride themed and show building was removed and gutted on the following month being replaced by set pice for the new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ride the new ride use the same ride system boats a layout as toyland tours did tho the layout will be short. Sadly tho this ride too will close November 8 2005. All tho gone the ride is still remeber to guest who rode it. During alton towers 2010 hellowen event scarefest the park entrance named called carnival of screams the music for the maze will be creepy music of the toyland tours themed along with props and art pieces from the ride bieng use in the maze.
