Following the Soviet army's liberation of Auschwitz on January 27, 1945, the camp's deteriorating condition was revealed. Since then, efforts have been made to maintain and preserve the grounds and archives as a site for memory and research.
The museum, along with part of the exhibition, was officially opened on June 14, 1947. Today, the museum attracts over a million visitors each year. Despite these protective efforts, the camp is experiencing natural decay.
#ISurvivedAuschwitz: Every year, Holocaust survivors return to Auschwitz to commemorate the camp's liberation on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, while others have pledged never to return.
Please #RememberThis: As the population of Holocaust survivors becomes increasingly fragile, so too does the foundation of the camp that was established to exterminate them.
In a 2020 Claims Conference survey, 56% of U.S. Millennials and Gen Z could not identify Auschwitz-Birkenau.
