The red sashes worn by members of the Federal City Brass Band in this video are illustrative of the distinctive elements that bands of the era would often add to their uniforms to set them apart, as are the eagles being worn on their kepis. Red sashes were typically worn by NCOs (Non-commissioned officers), such as sergeants. A company grade officer's sash is maroon, such as the one worn by the band leader, since he would have been paid at the same rate as a lieutenant, and a general officer's sash is gold. Toward the end of the video you can see examples of several different distinctive band uniforms being worn by members of the massed band. Some have braiding on their coats or a stripe on their trousers, they wear different styles and colors of hats, etc.
