Not even close. I dont care how popular they were bands like The Doors, Velvet Underground, Iggy and the Stooges, MC5, The Ramones, Television, New York Dolls, Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers, Wipers, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Brian Jonestown massacre and The Strokes made more of an impression and had more of an influence. They are a great band that's never in doubt but the greatest American band is a stretch.

R.E.M. - I Believe When I was young and full of grace, and spirited a rattlesnake When I was young and fever fell, my spirit I will not tell You're on your honor not to tell I believe in coyotes and time as an abstract Explain the change, the difference between What you want and what you need, there's the key Your adventure for today, what do you do Between the horns of the day I believe My shirt is wearing thin and change is what I believe in When I was young and give and take, and foolish said my fool awake When I was young and fever fell, my spirit I will not tell You're on your honor, on your honor Trust in your calling, make sure your calling's true Think of others, the others think of you Silly rule, golden words make practice, practice makes perfect Perfect is a fault, and fault lines change I believe My humor's wearing thin and change is what I believe in I believe My shirt is wearing thin and change is what I believe in When I was young and full of grace, and spirited a rattlesnake When I was young and fever fell, my spirit I will not tell You're on your honor, on your honor I believe in example, I believe my throat hurts Example is the checker to the key I believe My humor's wearing thin and I believe the poles are shifting I believe My shirt is wearing thin and change is what I believe in

I was the exact ‘right age’ to get REM. I’m Georgia and bought Murmur for $6.98 at Turtles Records and Tapes’ for Radio Free Europe and bought several other tapes but didn’t do deep dives into the albums. I wish I’d payed more attention at the time becuase all I had was time.

This music... it's like a river of light flowing through the hidden caverns of my soul, washing away layers of dust I didn’t even know were there. Each note feels like a fragment of eternity, as if the universe itself whispered secrets into the heart of the composer, who then poured them out in a language only the spirit could truly understand. The melodies are woven with threads of longing and joy, sorrow and hope, capturing the entire spectrum of human emotion in a single, trembling chord. It feels as though this music unlocked doors in my heart I had bolted shut long ago, reminding me of the beauty and vulnerability I had almost forgotten. I listen, and it's as if I'm seeing the world anew-as though every rustle of the trees and every wave on the shore echoes this same melody, reverberating with the pulse of life itself. This isn’t just music; it’s an awakening, a timeless conversation between my soul and the boundless mystery of existence.

Nice; how about doing one with an earlier classic such as “Talk About The Passion”, where I’ll look forward with much anticipation to that “scumbian reaction”, amongst other inscrutable gems of wisdom that chunked like a pour of sweet honey from the mouth of Michael Stipe in the days before he learned to enunciate, and sadly, became an extrovert…

Didnt they release GREEN on election day. Records used to come out on Tuesdays and they had a full page ad in the paper saying 'vote, then go buy Green, or something the like. Wait, I think it was just a pocture of an 80s voting booth and a 'Green, out Tuesday' linde. Whatever it was, I'll always think of them as VOTE.
