Me!! Jesus....that opening shimmered in out of nowhere and took me right back to 1995 and 15 year old me. The timing of the dialogue in that scene was beautiful ' you know with love comes strange currencies' I only realise how lyrically perfect this track is as a 42 year old. Had it going round my head all day at work

They were genuinely as authentic as you'll find, their music was identity, they were unique in their own way and that is why they were a fantastic stand alone band , copied nobody and nobody is going to sound like them.

Thank you REM for getting me through the shitty depressing years of my teens and twenties. I've always suffered from depression, and I'm finding out I have a few other issues. Sometimes, it was your music that kept me from jumping off a fucking cliff. And your work still fills my heart today.

Find the sayings/songs/thoughts that help you in dark times - keep them close to you. We share lonely times with a world full of lonely people, so you are really never alone - just need to find the ones with the love and comfort for you - you don’t need the rest (save the haters for themselves). Sometimes dealing with healing is a process that unravels over time, you can’t rush it, just let it unfold with time. Be strong/safe and loved.

Always liked REM. This song came out as I was turning 30 and was busy with career, starting family etc. So I never heard it. This past Holiday Season my son was in MSK hospital when his cancer returned. One day on ride home, amongst the holiday music on radio, I heard this song and not knowing what it was about felt how sad it was and it was about missed love. It stuck with me and I would play it every time on way home from hospital as my son’s health deteriorated. He passed in late January and this song always reminds me of my son and that time. Love you forever buddy. 🥲

I don't know why you're mean to me When I call on the telephone And I don't know what you mean to me But I want to turn you on Turn you up, figure you out I want to take you on These words, you will be mine These words, you will be mine, all the time Now fool might be my middle name But I'd be foolish not to say I'm going to make whatever it takes Ring you up, call you down, sign your name Secret love, make it rhyme Take you in and make you mine These words, you will be mine These words, you will be mine, all the time I tripped and fell, did I fall What I want to feel I want to feel it now You know with love comes strange currencies And here is my appeal I need a chance, a second chance, a third chance A fourth chance, a word, a signal A nod, a little breath Just to fool myself, to catch myself And make it real, real These words, you will be mine These words, you will be mine, all the time These words, you will be mine These words haunt me, hunt me down, catch in my throat Make me pray, to say love's confines, oh

My wife and I just saw the episode featuring this song and it brought me right back to when it was released. It came at a time when I was still very hung up on an ex-girlfriend (despite having a few pretty good ones in between). It really hit home back then and it still conjures up long dormant emotions. Thankfully everything worked out... Found the love of my life, 26yrs and three great kids later, but this song still brings me back to that lovesick 25yr old self...

i never read comments...just never really had any interest...idk why...dont really care what anyone else thinks but me...probably...fkd up of me i guess...but honest. I JUST READ YOUR COMMENT, I DONT EVEN KNOW WHY ..was looking for the only other reply/comment iv ever written on here...HAPPENED UPON YOURS, HAD TO READ IT TWICE. THANK YOU FOR SHARING. YOUR WORDS, SO SIMPLE SO DEEP SO HONEST. AND U MIGHT THINK IM EXAGGERATING, BUT I HAVE TEARS IN MY EYES AS IM WRITING THIS- IDK WHAT TO SAY- YOU TOUCHED ME CUZ I TOTALLY RELATE TO WHAT YOUR SAYING...NOT ABOUT THE SONG BUT ABOUT LIFE IN GENERAL. I NOTICED U DIDNT GET ANY LIKES OR COMMENTS SO THAT TOO COMPELLED ME TO SAY SOMETHING. idk i guess i dont relate much to what others say. but your words sounded like my own...and quite frankly, tho im thrilled at the kinship, i think we both have issues! "Even now, i might be living imitation of life." Made me think for u and for me, that our thoughts, tho introspectively luminating, its good to question life, reality, our perception....but is it really?? cuz what if whatever we say is true or we decide or come to understand, conclude ...for all intensive perposes LITERALLY IS or becomes TRUTH (our truth). sorry for my lengthy attempt at expressing something that feels much simpler. basically this: when u say even now i might be....ACTUALLY CREATES THAT REALITY..to think it to say it, etc It is in the thinking that we might be living an imitation of our lives, we create that specific reality. much the same as rose colored glasses make everything pink, blue glasses make it blue. look thru a kaleidescope see the fractals, look through a prism see rainbows. so maybe, and i am saying this to me too, we should CREATE WHAT WE WANT TO SEE instead of wondering what we are seeing. cuz the more we think that things could be this or that or something else, the more we are litterally creating that reality into existence. "i got to believe it to see it"... I dont like to use the word doubt..or even question...but i get it. i think we both just want to know the truth. what is real? But through YOUR words i heard myself speaking, and it gave me the opportunity to be on the outside looking in to i guess come to this different perspective and hopefully, if i keep it holy i can change my life before i die.

Very few songs where each verse gets BETTER. But this song is a rare one, where each verse completely builds on the previous. That last verse is KILLER. I need a chance, a second chance, a third chance, a fourth chance......

REM was seminal in the formation to rock we’ve heard for decades now. As a GenXer that grew up with REM as one of the soundtracks to my youth, I’m so grateful to have these wistful teenage memories remembered and brought back to the limelight from The Bear. So many of us that are new or have been brought back here 💛 There will never be another R.E.M.

Great song... Extremely well done video. Great lighting and cinematography. That they could take four not exactly traditionally good looking guys and peg the "cool meter" is a huge accomplishment. Great band... Miss those times.

Love'em all - the Daves, the Eddies, the Freddies, the Chris' ... but there's something with R.E.M. that's digging even deeper in my soul and comforting me in a state of bittersweet nostalgia than those beloved teenage and adolescence friends above...

Considering they uploaded this on 9/11, there's probably some bizarre artistic reason for the abbreviated ending, since it's been up for close to a year and they haven't fixed it. OR, the people running remhq are simply incompetent.

@@punkpoetry Well, pseudo genius, if you actually can play an instrument yourself (and I do) you have more respect for true musicians. And your use of the word "cliche" is a cliche itself.

Michael Wilson I studied the piano in my native city of Moscow, Russia between the ages of 6 and 18, seriously considering to become a professional at one point. The people I admire the most include Emil Gilels, Walter Gieseking and other pianistic greats some of whose rare recordings I uploaded on my channel. And yet I realize that valorizing “real instruments”, as if electronic music were somehow a lesser cultural form, is the telltale sign of a dullard with limited perspective on art and society. What you said merely rehashes the Great Teen Pop vs Nu Metal debate of 1999, where every single participant was a dumb American.

@@punkpoetry Calm down there Bill Evans. You're obviously comfortable with music being made and produced at a push of a button. Auto Tune as well. It appears that you have racist tendencies which pretty much nullify your diatribes. "dumb American"? At least we didn't produce mass murderers such as Lenin, Trotsky and Stalin. I'm not even a Republican, but you don't insult my fellow countrymen and women like that!
