There are undoubtedly more accurate rifles around as you say. However a bolt action isn't a semi and I bought this rifle because I was specifically looking for a semi automatic.

WOW-Great review of this rifle. Ive been going back and forth over which type of .22 rifle I want. Either the Marlin, Remington or the Ruger. So far - Im really impressed with the quality look of the Remington and the nice accuracy of it as seen in this video. 50yards seems pretty easy with this rifle - im very curious to see it fire @ 100yards...Thx for the review - I think Im sold.

Great review.I chucked a suppressor on my R10/22 and in conjunction w/sub-sonic ammo,it worked wonders when pest hunting.

@LowOIL Thanks pal. I hadn't heard of using rice. I'd use sand in your support bags as I would assume it would pack more solidly with less air space than rice. I have managed to hole the plastic bags a couple of times, but if you're paying attention they can last - particularly if you double up the bags.

@Cmitty33 Personally I rate the 597 the winner of your list. In all honesty I can't recommend this gun highly enough. The 597 has the advantage over the 10/22 in accuracy out of the box, a good symmetrical action, last shot hold open, more accessible mag release and easier and faster mag insertion/removal design, and imo better stock sizing. It has a flush magazine which is a bonus over the mossberg. You don't want these little mags protruding below the stock to catch on stuff. I like my 597

I'd definitely give it a good clean. The bolt hold open arm is pushed up by the orange plastic follower in the magazine as it rises to the top after the last round. Make sure the last shot hold open arm can tilt up and down against its spring. I'd remove it and clean around the area. There is a little pin holding it into the plastic housing which should be removed but be careful not to lose the little spring that holds it down. Note which way the spring goes before removing it.

@Sgtlaplante Inside the the action at the back of the receiver there is a rubber 'plug' - a buffer. When the bolt cycles rearward it stops against this rubber buffer and the springs then cycle the bolt forward.

@biblesnbarbells if the mounts you have for your sight are dovetail mounts you can install it directly on top of the rifle. If they are weaver mounts you will need a weaver base. Weaver mounts will not fit on a dovetail base.

i can't deny that the .22's affordability is amazing. i still have a Ruger 10/22 but i was just saying that i swapped out my 597 for a Savage .17 and i am much more pleased. Yes it is a bolt action and it has never fail me.

I have a few dozen 30rd remington mags. Ive had a few problems with FTL FTE but solved all the issues with loading and unloading them (without firing) and PLENTY of oil. I use a lot of remington oil, you just have to keep a towel handy, but after loading and ejecting them each 5-8 times EVERYONE works flawleesly! Ive had them gummed up so bad its was like grease and still no problems at ALL. You just have to work with them and break them in and use PLENTY OF OIL!

@grand778 sounds like your bolt had a dodgy extractor housing perhaps? There will be lemons out there though. I read a lot of good things about the 597 on rimfirecentral. So I decided to get one and it has performed just as well as I expected. No problems.

Yeah the wind was picking up as you can hear. This rifle makes an excellent varmint rifle. Transferring energy is really relegated to the realm of the bullet chosen. A nice wide and deep hollow point will inflict heavy damage. At closer ranges bullets will bust completely through varmints - (possums - NZ pest for example) but the damage from high velocity hollow points or even round nosed bullets is sufficient to end things quick. I have found .22lr effective even when passing through the prey.

I've found my metal mags work fine. However I have once used cartridges with longer bullets than normal which stuck in the magazine and would not feed. If you are having trouble with certain ammo, load the magazine and tap the base against something hard to jostle the cartridges into position. I don't find this necessary in general as I stick with the same cartridges that I've zeroed the rifle and I have no issues.

@Cmitty33 Defiantly the Remington! (but dont get the VTR version its not as accurate and it feels weird in your hand) the remington has 1/4 in groupings at 100 yrds, feels good in your hands, and most of all its fun! its very low maintenance and i have a $140 center point scope mounted on it solid. if you havent made your decision yet make sure you order a target hammer to lighten the trigger pull to about 2.5 lbs!

@HedgehogOutdoors I have no experience with the Marlin but I much prefer the 597 over the 10/22 for size, easier to srip, symmetrical action, accuracy, last shot hold open, overall design - floating barrel etc.

your groups are just confirmation that this is the next .22 purchase I will make. I'm so tired of hearing about the 10-22 having been created by divine inspiration. The Remington fits me. The 10-22 doesn't. The Remington sights are better too. Way better. It looks like you have beaten back the jamming problem. Sweet!!

I have had mine since September and I did replace the extractor because a poorly seated load blew the extractor out. But it is running fine now. 30 round mags don't always feed right, but I can work through it.

I was using federal at first which is garbage ammo, it used to jam the bolt on its way out on random shots. It would actually get stuck between the returning bolt and the chamber. Once i switched to remington high velocity, it worked a lot better....now i switched to CCI stringray which are amazing. Give those a try...

I have this rifle, and I've found it to be very accurate with the iron sights. But it must be cleaned after probably 100 rounds, or it jams quite regularly. I would recommend getting a Ruger 10/22. However, I got my 597 or only $120 new, so it's great for the price.

Yes, it was my first powder burning rifle. I started on an air rifle though, so that was good shooting discipline beforehand. The semi auto needs more discipline to make single shots count rather than just spraying.

Great shooting! I just picked up one of these rifles and I'm looking forward to giving it a test fire. One suggestion for you.... I noticed you're awfully quick in coming off the trigger after taking your shot. You might consider a bit more follow-through with your trigger finger. Not trying to dis your accomplishments, just a suggestion from a former coach/ NRA Master competitor/instructor. That night help your occasional "flyer". Keep up the great shooting & Vids!!

I've used my 597 to hunt NZ #1 pest the possum and have also shot a number of small wild pigs the neighbouring farmer wanted me to get rid of (rooting up his pasture). Couldn't have got the pigs without semi auto function as one in particular took about 7-8 shots of running fire as it sprinted toward the bush line. The whole thing only took a few moments. It was dead in seconds. I value the ability to dispense follow up shots.

Excellent shooting. Do you think a 22lr can take down a large pig or animal with 1-2 shots at the range you are shooting at? I want to order this gun for where I live, it would be really great if you could help me assess if the 22lr has enough power for this.

I take it your Savage is a bolt action? I have two videos (not uploaded) of a semi automatic Magnum Research .17hmr misfiring in my hands. Very unpleasant and had to iron out a flinch after that. Hard to trust a semi auto in that calibre. Nothing beats the price of .22 ammo though and knockdown is good even though the range and ballistics aren't up to .17hmr level. The semi auto allows a lot of firepower on target in a short space of time also.

@rjreid1958 Any place you can physically hold the gun you should be able to test trigger pull. My trigger pull is quite stiff as is pretty much the standard on modern semi automatic 22's. Harder trigger pulls = less accidents and less court cases. It pulls easier over time as it wears, but it's never been a problem. If a rifle will shoot half MOA at 50 meters, all else being equal the dispersion at 100 meters will be 1 MOA. Not taking into account .22lr bullet peculiarities/velocity issues.

@cgpQTIP 1. Per part one of this review, dry firing a rimfire by holding the bolt slightly open won't result in the firing pin hitting anything. That will give a general idea of how stiff the trigger is. 2. replace MOA in my comment with inch. That's what I intended. Had senior moment.

Well it depends on the user. You have to be more disciplined with a semi auto because there is a tendency not to place your shots carefully because the shooter knows they've got quick follow up shots ready to go. It can potentially give a new shooter sloppy habits as apposed to a basic 'make each shot count' bolt action. In saying that this rifle was my first firearm but I was 23 when I got it so was disciplined and had used an air rifle beforhand. So if the hunter is young then prob not.
