I have just watched 6 of these and yours is by fare the very best. No one else addressed the 'carbon' as you did. I see where the gas port can be the main problem. Thank you

Thanks for that. What’s really interesting is that millions of these rifles get used and abused and only a very few ever get cleaned.

@@peterparsons7141 this design was about the best they could make for a no maintenance action, but their quality control on the gas block was unfortunately its downfall. As a gunsmith i really wish they would bring this design back in more rifles, it would really help the short lifespan of these poorly made rifles of today.

Great Video, I just tore down my first 742. Hardest part getting the charging handle pin out. I'm guessing from this and other video they were knocked out and place back in before the video or edited out. Watched other video's were the guy's just took a couple tap's to get it out, I call B.S. @CustomFirearmSolutions
@CustomFirearmSolutions 21 күн бұрын
@@mikedragon5553 yes, it should fall out right where the plug was removed. There is a good chance there will be some carbon buildup that may prevent the ball from falling out. You may need to put a couple drops of solvent in there overnight.

This is a great video. I have one of these guns, it was my grandfathers. I recently had a Boyd’s stock placed on it after the wooden for end cracked. The Boyd’s has cracked twice now and is going back to the gunsmith again. I wonder now if it’s a gas port problem. Parts are so hard to find. I’d love to find another fore end.

3:20 what size roll pin punch did you use for that retaining pin?
@CustomFirearmSolutions
@CustomFirearmSolutions 27 күн бұрын
The pin is a 0.200 diameter roll pin, but it tapers down on the ends, allowing you to use various sizes. If you have a siezed pin, you can use an over sized punch to break it loose, then use a smaller punch to push it through. The punch i use for this is 0.150 diameter, but anything around there should work fine as long as the dimple at the end of the roll pin punch seats inside the center hole of the roll pin

Question about the lubrication. I did not take the bolt assembly out, but I did take the forend off and scrubbed with hoppes where a bunch of carbon was. Do I lubricate or oil the spring and tube? And the trigger was a little gunky too, do i just drip a oil on moving parts? Also mine did not come with a breech cover plate and the nozzle is naked. Is this ok?
@CustomFirearmSolutions
@CustomFirearmSolutions 24 күн бұрын
@@JAD-fb6ur you only need a small amount of oil in the action. I put a couple drops inside the receiver where the bolt rides, and i just a spray bottle and give a spritz to the action spring just to keep things from rusting

My father gave me his Remington 7400 chamberd in 308 its wierd it will fire clear the spent round but not chamber the next rack it fire it ssme thing the spent round will eject but click didnt chamber the new round do you think cleaning the gas chamber will help
@CustomFirearmSolutions
@CustomFirearmSolutions Ай бұрын
@@timothymanning4246 theres a few things that can cause issues feeding, but yes, always clean first. It is possible the action is being pushed back just far enough to eject, but not all the way back to grab the next round and feed. From there if your gas system checks out, id look more into the feeding half of the action and inspect all parts for wear and loose tolerances.

I cannot get the little pin out of the charging handle. Any ideas? Bent multiple punches trying to get it out but it’s not budging
@CustomFirearmSolutions
@CustomFirearmSolutions 2 ай бұрын
@@Pookytootinalil Make sure you are using a proper roll pin punch, not a tapered punch. Also make sure you are punching from the top downward, it will only punch out that way. If its never been out before and its siezed in, it can be extremely carefully drilled out and replaced with a new pin, but if you're not comfortable with doing so i would not attempt. Ive had some stubborn pins in the past, once you bend a punch on those small diameter guys that punch will be difficult to apply full hammer pressure straight downward and will most likely keep bending the punch. I would block the gun up in a vice, get a brand new roll pin punch or flat face punch and give it one real heavy whack to break it loose. Also, dont be afraid to try and get a drop of solvent to sit in the area over night.

Any recommendations on how to make it not jam? Ive got one in 270 that sits in a safe because it jams every shot and rips the lip off the casing trying to eject the shell. Ive tried cleaning the chamber really good thinking maybe there was some buildup in there but no luck.
@CustomFirearmSolutions
@CustomFirearmSolutions 19 күн бұрын
@@jc114-i9w if its riping the lip off, that is a tell tale sign that the chamber is alowing the brass to expand beyond design. Most likely your headspacing is off, or you have scaring in the chamber thats holding the spent brass tight when it expands. First thing check your headspacing. If your headspacing is too far, it can be very dangerous to shoot; the gun can explode. Id recommend taking to your local gunsmith, or you can ship it to me and i can diagnose it for you.

@CustomFirearmSolutions the times it done it to me before, I had to take a cleaning rod and knock the casing out the chamber and the sides of the casing were scratched up pretty bad. I'll look around and try to find a gunsmith to take it to and get them to check headspace. I don't use the gun anymore as I bought a new Xbolt and put the 7400 away. Someone brought up about the 7400's the other day in conversation and that's what got me to thinking about it again. I liked the gun, and it shot well, just got frustrating when it kept jamming.

I just bought a 7400 in 243 I disassembled it like you showed. Mine didn’t have the little ball in the gasblock. Do they all have one? The guy I bought it from said after a few rounds it wouldn’t eject the fired round. He said if he let it set for a few minutes it would eject the round. I haven’t fired it since I di a good cleaning. Thanks for your video.
@CustomFirearmSolutions
@CustomFirearmSolutions Ай бұрын
@@terryrauh6647 every one ive taken apart had the ball. If yours dosent have it, it should still eject, it will just be over gassed and beat up your internal parts over time. Based on what your describing theres a few things that could cause that problem, but i would need more info or pictures of the spent brass and chamber. Id look at things like the chamber to make sure it isnt scored or scratched to the point where the expanded fired brass holds onto the chamber walls making it difficult to eject until the brass cools down and shrinks slightly releasing its hold. Secondly take a look a your gas block where its soldered onto the barrel, these are known for breaking off or cracking which again once it heats up the cracks will expand and gas will flow out the crack and not allow for proper cycling.

I fired this 7400 today. First 5 rounds did good then started having ejection problems. By the 9 th round the spent round would not come out until gun cooled about 10 minutes then it came right out. The shell casings got dirtyer and dirtyer and the primers ate flattened like high pressure. The gun shot 4 inch groups at 100 yards. What do you think ? Tried 2 factory ammo.
