Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

I had a friend at the University of Wyoming in the early ‘60’s. His name was Leak and his dad had designed the 66 for Remington along with the 1100. His dad sent us a prototype for us to “test.” Of course we obliged! We even accidentally ran over the buttstock. We hosed it off and kept shooting Wyoming Jackrabbits!

Loved my Nylon 66. Great times, great memories. Rabbits, squirrels, snakes, birds, and all sorts of targets absorbed thousands of .22 lead bullets. Won a 50 yard Children's contest against 19 friends at our local Rifle Range. The final round was against Karen Williams and her Dad's scoped target rifle. The 3-shot patterns both considerably smaller than a dime. Two shots in same hole and one connecting. Mr.Williams measured each with a micrometer, and after 10 minutes of judging, said mine was a fraction smaller, maybe. Mr. Powers spoke up and said, maybe they should also consider that Karen was shooting a scoped target Rifle, while I was shooting just open sights on a Nylon 66. That settled it. So I pocketed $5 and several pats on my back. FUN times. (Won another contest that afternoon - against 43 grown men and all sorts of expensive shotguns and years of experience.) The good ole days.

I first saw one as a kid in the mid 60's, about 50 years later I had one which I'll probably die with. I did own a 77 which is the same thing with a magazine before the 66, though. The brown was a Mohawk, the black was an apache, and the green was a Seneca.

My dads first gun… he was born in 1966 and when he was 12 he and my grandad visited a local pawn shop.. there was a brand new nylon 66 .22lr Apache for sale on the wall.. like $79 buck or something… my dad begged my grandpa for it the whole time they were at the pawn shop.. when they went to leave the pawn shop the owner took it down off the wall and gave it to my dad for free.. my dad still carries this gun every where he goes 45 years later… it’s taken thousands of animals.. shoots every time and shoots very accurately

Great memories! I had the Green 66, I think it's the most rare. My daddy bought it in 64, and in 83, my uncle gave me a Sear & Robuck single shot that was too heavy for me to carry, so dad swapped me his nylon 66. Shot many a squirrel on Duggar Mtn with it as a kid. Loved it dearly, but it made a poor host for a scope. I had not so great eye sight and needed a scope to be accurate. So in 1990, I traded the 66 for a Remington 572 pump. We thought it was a good trade cause he allowed me $100 trade in. Worst gun trade I ever made. Wished a thousand times I would have kept the green nylon. Live and learn.

Despite the reply being 2 years late there's no reason to think that a nylon 66 is dangerous to fire as long as the bore is clear and all parts are intact, it's a modern gun as good as one made yesterday.

Never had a Nylon 66, but we did have a Remington Model 572 pump and thousands of jacks back in the ‘80s on my grandparents’ farm. Their farm was surrounded by big ranches and there were always hundreds of rabbits around. No matter how many we shot we never made a dent in the population. What did make a dent was bubonic plague that came through in late ‘80s and wiped out nearly everything for a couple years. Then the coyotes showed up, which we never saw until the early ‘90s. Never been the same since. Dad ended up with that Model 572 and still uses it on occasion for pests around the ranch house. Good memories.

Good stuff again, lots of memories. Had a Mohawk 10C about 40 years ago and then a Nylon 66 25 years ago. The only interesting thing about the design is that the way the scope is mounted on the receiver cover caused point of impact shifts when taking outside in extreme cold. It always ran though, even hunting jack rabbits at -40°.

I still have my childhood nylon 77 (magazine model). Great little gun. I use it as my Trapline rifle.

I worked for Remington in 1975 and bought one though employee sales and found a defect in the rifle. Nylon is hydroscopic meaning it changes dimension with humidity. Since the rear sights are attached to the metal cover and the barrel is locked down further away on the nylon stock, the tight grouping would change location day to day. To fix it I took sights from a Remington 700 and attached these directly on the barrel. I haven’t had to change the sights over 45 years now’s. It nails tacks and I have 😢never cleaned it in all these years. Ten round magazines, I think it is the best and most lightweight and reliable firearms ever made!

Nice! These are good shooters, I inherited the N12 also and is more accurate and consistent than some of my newer rifles, lol, thx for the video.

This was the 1st rifle I ever shot. My dad's friend was a marine sniper in Vietnam and we went shooting one day in ny. I was 8 when I shot it and it immediately sent me into a spiral of ww2 milsurp un collecting, I'm 22 now and I have a 50 gun collection worth 100k. I thank him for putting me onto the hobby

My father bought me that same rifle when I was a kid. The year was 1974,and it was stolen in 1992. I found one in the Cabelas gun library about 6 years ago for around 350 bucks. It is in amazing condition, so I bought it. That little rifle is a tack driver.

One other thing the 66 has going for it is how nice the trigger is for being on a semi....like velvet.

I had an Apache Black Nylon 66 when I was a kid. Receiver and barrel were chrome plated. I killed truck loads of small game with it. Including one cotton tail at 210 yards shot thru the eye. They made Nylon bolt and lever guns also. I have seen one Brown bolt gun I have never seen one of the lever guns face to face. The three colors of the Nylon guns were Apache Black, Mohawk Brown and Seneca Green. The browns were the most common. There is a mint Apache Black I saw listed for 1800 bucks. And I saw a Black one at Gunshow priced at 850. I gave 35 for mine when I was 12 years old. Best 22 ever. Never hung up plenty accurate and weather proof. Way ahead of its time.

The Nylon 66 is on of my favorite .22's I've had the chance to shoot. A friend of mine has one and it's accurate as can be.

I've always wondered why we don't see nearly as many rabbits as in the "old days." Even here in Arky land. Now I know. Thanks. That was my first real gun as an 8 year old, Loved it. Wish I still had it. Great vid!

I have a semi auto 22 from Sears that used to be my cousin's. Really nice gun, walnut stock, nice deep blueing. Hard to believe it's from Sears, but boy it's a shooter. It sat in my grandparents' basement for about 30 years. After they had past, my dad brought it home, and it sat in his closet for another 20 years. I brought it home to teach my kids how to shoot, and after cleaning it up I realized how pristine it really is. The sights are still dead on, the stock still looks new... I'm really excited to be able to teach the kids how to shoot on such a cool old rifle.

I love this rifle ! As a boy and young man I shot thousands of rounds through nylon 66 in green and brown versions . When my my brother in law got out of the service he taught me the instinctive form of shooting the army had adopted and called quick kill . I could hit tossed arieal targets one after the other . Where it really excelled was shooting rats at the city dump at night with a light strapped to the fore stock, and hit we would fire 200 - 300 rounds a night and hit many more than we missed .

I had a Nylon 66, the Apache model, chrome barrel and receiver cover, black stock. I bought it at the rod & gun club at Harvey barracks in Kitzigen, Germany in 1978. I stupidly traded it against a pistol in 1983. I sure wish I still had it.

My uncle had a black and chrome Nylon 66 that we used to shoot huge bullfrogs with, they were as big as rabbits, on the levees around the catfish ponds outside of Belzoni, Ms. back in the 1980s. Biggest bullfrogs I've ever seen in my life. That was also one accurate rifle. I shot iron sights and had no problem hitting the eye of a squirrel way up an oak in the daytime or the eye of a bullfrog at night in the headlights of that Chevy Silverado.
