@jerry s And are you speaking from experience or just another KZbin armchair expert? I have three 700's all early 1990's vintage in .22-250, .30-06 and .300 WinMag. In the past nearly 30 years I would bet I have put over 15,000 rounds through them and NEVER ONCE have I had an issue with an inadvertent discharge. The triggers on all three have been adjusted to 2.5 pounds by a very competent gunsmith and all are flawlessly maintained, like all of my firearms. I have over a dozen friends who also own 700's in various calibers and none of them have ever had an issue either and they have all fired at least as many rounds through theirs as I have.
@scottmurphy6503 жыл бұрын
@jerry s First foremost, if you do not understand the rules of gun safety you have NO FUCKING BUSINESS owning a firearm or even a BB or pellet gun. PERIOD, If you watched this video you would see the terrible material condition most of these rifles were in. Lack of maintenance is a cardinal sin when it comes to ANY firearm, and even most of the very powerful air rifles that are out there now. Corrosion, grit and other debris can have a significant impact on the operability of ANY firearm. Despite the hype, if you ignore your "Russian Rattle Can" AK-47 it too will fail. It would probably surprise you how many people are "kitchen table gunsmiths" who take apart and modify their weapons without having a clue what they are doing. ALL of my 700's have had the triggers reduced to 2.5 pounds by a Remington certified gunsmith and not once in almost 30 years have I had a single stoppage or failure. Nothing mechanical is ever perfect, anyone who thinks otherwise is a fool. But when a disinterested 3rd party AND the families of people experiencing this failure cannot replicate it, it shoots about a dozen holes in the credibility of the people making the claim.

While a lot of comments seem to be directed at the CNBC the fact is on Apr. 11, 2014, Remington announced a voluntary recall of Model 700 and Model Seven rifles with X-Mark Pro (XMP) triggers, manufactured from May 1, 2006 to April 9, 2014. On May 16 the recall was extended to cover Australia. Many people who have tested the newly released Remington R51 have found terrible problems with the pistol. Don't let a dislike of CNBC blind you to the fact the Remington's quality has been falling off a cliff.

It appears there a lot going on in these "reports" and to draw a conclusion from merely watching a minutes long segment on what the producers "want you to see" would be hasty and impulsive.

All I can say is I work at a hunting and fishing store and sell firearms. There can be safety defects from even the most reputable gun manufacturers, but it is extremely rare. I can say the quality control from Remington is going down hill but I notice the same from other great names like Browning, Winchester, Marlin and so on. Mass production of firearms has changed the industry over the years. I have a Remington 700 and will happily continue to use it (with a timney trigger). I don't know for sure how many of these Remingtons have this issue for sure, but most accidental discharges are human error. If we all practise proper safe handling of firearms, there is no reason anyone should be harmed in the event of a defect like this. Stay safe and keep shooting guys!

There is one indisputable fact in every one of these tragedies, unsafe weapon handling practices. Every single one of these deaths could have been prevented if the persons involved followed simple gun safety rules. That being said, why did Remington settle with multiple plaintiffs if their trigger was indeed safe?

When the person who designed the gun comes out and says I knew there was a problem with it, and I've been trying to get Remington to change it for 50 years, and then produces memos that he sent to Remington, that lawyers have found in Remington's files, with the new trigger design proposed that did not have this problem. It is safe to say that they are very well aware that their safety does not work properly. The Remington 700 was probably my favorite bolt action rifle. But after this, on top of that Remington R 51 mess, on top of their Golden Sabers not firing, I believe I will ever buy another Remington product. Including ammunition. They seem to just be scumbags. And they could sit here and say these are baseless accusations all they want. Honestly if someone from Remington reads this, all this is doing is making you look shittier. When there are over 100 people who have this problem, when there are videos of people making the rifle fire without pulling the trigger. And when the designer of the rifle comes out and says yes there was a problem with it when it and I've told Remington about it for 50 years. You continuing to deny it just makes you look like a little kid who won't take responsibility for anything. Get your shit together.
@CoSomber6 жыл бұрын
I do agree that the quality OF ALL firearms has gone down in the years just like any other products, But I don't believe you're claim about a flaw or malfunction caused by Remington. You say that there are over 100 people having this problem (the safety) so we can assume about 500 reports and about 600 non-reported issues a year that sounds like a lot? No do you know how many Remington 700 are sold each year? At LEAST around 100,000 every year and 1100 of that 100 thousand has gone off, but if we take that 1100 it's safe to assume that 2/3 of firing was due to tampering with the gun(Remington cant be held accountable) or Very bad condition which leaves about 370 mabey true cases which don't include a branch or object hitting the trigger as well as other facter so its safe to say that you're either very VEARY unlucky geting a defective rifle wich is always going to happen in a large scale companie or you lying
@Sugarsail16 жыл бұрын
Even if all of that is so (and the guy you mentioned retired in 1975), the fact remains that safe gun handling would avoid all such accidents and considering the long beneficial history of the rifle, including in the military, putting the entire blame on Remington is not ethically or logically justified.

I just bought a used 700 off an auction website. After I won the auction, I contacted Remington to verify if the serial number fell within the recall range and whether or not it had already been serviced. Remington immediately responded that it was subject to the recall and had not been reworked by them. Remington provided clear instructions not to use the rifle and they were shipping a box and ppd shipping label to return the rifle for rework at no charge. I instead opted to install a new Timney Trigger to be absolutely sure and knowingly purchased the rifle at a discounted price allowing for the trigger replacement out of pocket, What amazed me are all the defective XMP OEM triggers that are for sale on eBay that people have replaced with aftermarket units like I am doing. I find it unconscionable that someone would remove a defective trigger and place it up for sale on eBay for someone less well-informed to purchase and install in their own rifle. While some ads state the trigger group was already reworked by Remington or "from a rifle unaffected by the recall" they are clearly not. All Model 700 and Model 7 AMP triggers with smooth trigger surfaces are suspect and those with a ribbed trigger surface are fine Also, worked triggers are stamped with punch (dot) on the bolt release button. The majority of those on eBay are neither rubber or pinched and are defective, take-off triggers.

I love my Remington 700 BDL ,.270. That said, if there is even a hint that a round might discharge without touching the trigger or ever has I will act decisively. And I did just that. I replaced the trigger group with a Timney. I'm a happy camper now. Always keep your weapon pointed in a safe direction, like the ground. Point the muzzle at the ground in front of you, not at your feet. That's not just good practice, it's required. Avoid chambering a round in a setting where you don't intend to discharge it. For example, when you are examining or cleaning your weapon. Firearms are serious weapons. They are not toys. You can't be too careful. That's just not a thing.

I have numerous Remington 700's and replaced the triggers on all of them with Timney triggers out of caution. That said, I much prefer my Winchester model 70 (controlled feed is far superior to push feed in my opinion, and the 3-position safety is also superior in my opinion). I also had to replace the bolt for a 300 Win Mag on the 700 because their tiny extractor failed to extract far too often (what I read is not uncommon among belted magnums with 700s). I put a mini-16 extractor in a PTG and it never fails to extract on my belted magnum. That's another reason why I prefer controlled feed Winchester's. They have always extracted without an issue. I do like the Remington 700 5-R, but like I said, the trigger and the bolt were not up to my liking, so I replaced them.

@@b.z.7618 Thanks for the comments. Seems to me that what they are very carefully not telling us is that to tune down the pull weight of the trigger to a point for precise targeting you reach the fault point. I think I set the pull weight on the Timney at 2.5 lbs. As I understand it, that's the lowest weight considered safe for field work. Comparatively, that Rimington trigger group is feces. (my opinion) It came with a factory setting of over 6 lbs., as I recall. I couldn't hit a damn thing with it. If I tried to tune the weight down to, say, 2.5 lbs. I'd run into the inherent fault with that trigger group. That's what they are not telling us. To solve the issue and put it behind you, replace the trigger group. Timney makes some of the industry's best. I expect there are others to chose from. I don't have that model 70, but I've had my eye on it for a long time. You are tempting me to take the plunge. I personally own two Remington 700's. The adjustable trigger is a complex system that requires a competent gunsmith that knows what he is doing in order that the adjustments are made properly. Any adjustable trigger can be made unsafe, including the famous Timney trigger, which I have installed on my own rifles (Mauser rifles mostly) as well as others. I do automotive repairs every day, and I see some of the most dangerous situations quite regularly (for example). Mostly because the owner or some incompetent "mechanic" performed repairs that are not by any means recommended procedures, and are downright dangerous. This usually causes the customer more money and frustration, making me think that the vehicle would have been better left alone until truly professional repairs could be made. The same thing goes for firearms, because they are complex mechanical devices, just like vehicles.
@ung42711 жыл бұрын

I have owned a 700VS for over 20 years, and have disassembled the rifle and tinkered with the factory trigger many times to adjust the trigger pull. The factory trigger pull is set so high for liability reason that it affected my grouping. The only time the rifle had ever fired (empty chamber of course) without trigger being pulled was when I purposely turned the trigger adjustment screw so the striker/sear would give way when I slammed the bolt shut. That's how I know I have gone too far and it has become unsafe. But even then, the sear has never let go on its own by manipulation of the safety lever. My current trigger pull is set at 3-4 lbs, not target trigger by any means, but is still safe even when the gun is dropped and gave me good accuracy. IMO, safety becomes a problem when people get too aggresive with the trigger adjustment to create a "hair trigger". I like the rifle a lot, reberreled it once. Only complaint is its 2 bolt lugs which do not wear evenly, but that's not a safety issue.

I think the problem here is people are in general pretty stupid. We all are, I am an idiot and so are you. If I had accidentally discharged a firearm and it killed somebody in my home, I don't find it unreasonable I would be seeking someone to blame besides myself. The other part to this is reporters who don't know how to operate a gun should not be reporting on the operation of a gun. The next problem is the "kitchen gunsmith" as I have heard them called. Untrained people modifying the triggers on their firearms are taking a risk, a risk they don't often fully understand. I don't care if you've owned a firearm and shot it every day for 30 years, you might not fully understand the consequences of your trigger modification. For example, a trigger so light that dropping or even setting your firearm down could cause the trigger to "pull" and the firearm to discharge. An extremely light trigger is GREAT to shoot with, but extremely dangerous at any other time.

I have four Remington 700 rifles in different calibers, and all are accurate, rugged, and pleasant to shoot (even the .300 WinMag). The triggers are just a bit on the heavy side, but they are crisp, and I've never been tempted to try to adjust them to lighten the trigger pull, instead, I learned to deal with them. The trigger mechanism on this gun is NOT designed to be user-adjusted, and if one attempts this, especially if one is not a qualified gunsmith or armorer, one is simply asking for trouble. The trigger mechanism on the competing Winchester Model 70, on the other hand, can be adjusted with complete safety because the trigger and safety mechanisms are designed very differently. I've got one of these too, and I adjusted the trigger to be a very light, CRISP 3 lbs. Sometimes it's more about knowing one's limitations, and learning to use the tools at hand, rather than tampering with mechanisms we don't fully understand. Also, safe firearm handling is never an accident, it is always the result of proper training and conscious effort. Lastly, a firearm needs to be maintained. Dirt, rust, and neglect are NOT your friends.

I love it for printing tiny groups, being inexpensive and for shooting red foxes with it. It is by far my most used gun. However, to our shooting community is appears ridiculous to accept a rifle, that has nothing but a trigger safety for security. There are few hunters in Germany who take the risk of packing a rifle that does not either block the firing pin, like the Mauser 98 or the Winchester 70 does, or better are handcocking systems like the Blaser R93 / R8 altogether. No Remington shaming though. It's a great design. Great value for money. By the way, we also love you folks for companies like RCBS/Hornady and for liberating us from the Nazis, too.

I own a 1996 Remington 700 SPS Tactical rifle that fired when I took it off safe without my finger on the trigger. Fortunately, I was at the range and the rifle was pointed downrange. Scared the crap out of me though. I never touched the trigger when it was on safe. I never adjusted the trigger or modified it in any way. It's all original equipment except for a scope. My rifle is not rusted or damaged in any way. The rifle had been the garage overnight in freezing temperatures. It's the only time it ever happened. When I contacted Remington after the rifles were recalled they told me my gun was not included in the recall despite being in the year range. Only the X-Mark Pro triggers from 2006-2014 were included. I now only use it when the temperature is above 50°F. Anyone can make a mistake and an oddball defect that only shows up in freezing weather is excusable. Remington's reaction is not. It changed my mind about the company. Remington quality really started to slip in the late 80s. It got even worse under Cerberus. Cracked 1100 receivers. Defective 3200 shotguns. Defective R51 pistols. Still defective R51 Gen 2 pistols. Changing the steel in 1100 and 870 shotgun barrels from chrome-moly to free-chipping carbon steel to save a few dollars caused many barrels to explode at the barrel stamp. The 700 trigger issues all came out in the lawsuits despite Remington's denials. Their own testing showed the rifles could discharge unintentionally so these denials are beneath contempt. Since the second bankruptcy in 2018 the new owners won't honor the recall. I just hope they bring the quality back. kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5KTlIGoZ8SZiac

I have seen both videos and my response is this. I own a 700 and I have never had a miss fire or had it fire by me moving the bolt or safety. I have the post (1990?) manufactured rifle and my bolt does not lock so I can unload the rifle with out releasing the safety. In any case muzzle control is most important in keeping bystanders from getting injured or killed. To those who have had such an accident I offer my sympathy.

I think the video which shows "law enforcement officers" with the gun that fires by touching the bolt is a little fishey. Anyone with the know how can disassemble a firearm alter it reassemble it correct or not. I believe it was purposely altered to misfire. They are trolling for a publicity stunt.
@raymondwilliamblack6 жыл бұрын
any firearm can experience what is known as a HANG /MISFIRE this can be caused by a delayed striker (firing pin ) week primer strike or faulty powder charge. every artillery man or Tank commander/gunner is trained to deal with a misfire, using the command MISS FIRE WAIT 10 MINUIT'S, there by allowing time for the propellant to ignite, the weapon remains live and safety levers engaged, the m60 support weapon was notorious for runaways and misfires during heavy firing and HEAD SPACING in the 50 browning Ma DEUCE was always critical.

Its a weapon... If a loaded gun "goes of by it self" its the operators fault. Did you load a gun you were not sure was safe? Your at fault. Did you load a gun you knew had worn parts that could risk a misfire? Your at fault... Have you loaded a worn out gun that you have not serviced for years? Your at fault... Did you ****about with the trigger pull length? you are definitely at fault... Did you handle a loaded weapon? Guess what... you are responsible for what that weapon does when its in your hands... Clean it, inspect every damned part, repair it as needed... its not a freaking toy.

closing the bolt on a bolt action rifle with a Mauser type action like used on the Remington 700 and many other manufacturers rifles often have one common scenario that can occur with bolt closing with the safety off and on situation 1, to close the bolt and drop the firing pin safely the operator must open the bolt, pull the trigger then close the bolt which disengages the firing pin and it does not drop to discharge if there is a round in the chamber. Even if the trigger is pulled again situation 2, with the safety and the bolt open pull the trigger, close the bolt and take finger off trigger. disengage the safety, If the trigger is then pulled in this situation the rifle WILL FIRE, it was designed to do this so that a hunter could chamber a round with the safety on, carry it and disengage the safety when ready for use. this minor detail is very important for handlers of bolt action rifles to know and be aware of. persons who have accidental discharges this way are not aware of the function of their firearms. learn how they work and read the manual before operating so there are no accidents. maintain your firearm and don't alter it with modifications unless you are trained to do so.

I'd like to point out something, like the 900 lb gorilla in the room. The problem is not with the large percentage of firearms that never exhibited an issue. Problem exists that they were told before the firearm was ever released sale to the public when it were still making the model 721 and 7:22 that there was a flaw in the safety mechanism that could kill people. And they insisted on building the firearm in a manner that killed people. For that, and the evidence is perfectly sound and clear. The people responsible for that decision should have been tried and put in prison. They had depraved disregard for the safety of those people who died. That the rifle they tried to copy was so much safer is clear evidence that they didn't need to build the rifle the way they did. Proof is further exacerbated by the fact that they would have had to spend an extra five and a half cents to make the rifle safe. The device that they put on the rifle today is the exact same device that was devised by their chief engineer when the problem first exhibited itself. Yet these animals, excuse me that is an affront to animals, these assholes chose to degrade people and tell them they didn't know how to handle firearm they were handling it wrong they were getting out of paying proper damages for decades while they knew that they were killing people. And yet you have the audacity to say that they're finally shooting straight or telling the truth. What a batch of crap.

Where is the original upload of this? Definitely the truth. CNBC wanted to destroy the reputation of the most popular hunting rifle on the market. The vast majority of R700 malfunctions occur either from lack of maintenance, or some armchair gunsmith who chose to wind down the trigger to a half pound hair trigger then acts shocked when the mechanism fucks up.

I just saw this video in KZbin, it surprise me but I did and still own a Remington 700 30 06 BDl model and this is what happen to make it misfire, pull the trigger while the reloading handle is up, as soon as you push the reload handle down it will fire also if you have the safety on it won't fire until you push the safety switch to ready to shoot position. My opinion is never load a bullet into the chamber until it's ready shoot the target and always point to a safe direction

Again...the facts are that the rifles in the videos.....were never submitted for evaluation and you have to wonder why would they take the time to video the malfunction...but not submit the rifle for evaluation. Probably because they tampered with the trigger mechanism and improperly adjusted it outside of its safe operation. FACTS and EVIDENCE are REQUIRED to make an accurate conclusion. This video makes Remington look desperate, dishonest and downright evil. For fifty years the safety issues regarding the Remington 700 series have been well-known among firearms enthusiasts. The designer admitted that it's a design flaw. Remington has settled out of court several times prior to re-designing the action and recalling thousands of rifles. While CNBC played up loose with some truths regarding the issues, Remington is even shadier when they claim there were no issues whatsoever. Why didn't Remington in this video address the leaked internal memos regarding the safety mechanism failures? I'm curious to see how they would spin such obvious evidence to their knowledge of an issue regarding unintentional discharges of the 700 series.
