I've played and beaten both. I also really like both, the atmosphere and creativity of the original, and the... well, let's just say I can't really say exactly what I like about Dark Moon, but I really liked it. I'm personally really glad to see the Luigi's Mansion 3 seems to be a good combination of both.

Perhaps we call them that because 'ear buds' would otherwise be more easily confused with them. I think before the advent of earbuds, they actually were called earphones? Hmm. More research is clearly required here, but I'm too lazy, and the matter is of little consequence.
