Can people stop pretending like Dark Souls inspired games can't be compared to Dark Souls? This game CLEARLY borrows large amounts of gameplay elements from it, so not drawing a comparison would just be intentionally being obtuse. It's not even subtle, either. The game even has bonfires and fog walls for boss arenas.

Picked up this title on Monday for myself and a buddy, having a blast, though I do feel sometimes when doing an adventure in co-op, the stage progression isn't very intuitive and I would like to see more weapon variety, though for what it is, I am enjoying it lots. Also picked up Mothergunship after you reviewed it, thanks!

I think its important to note that not everyone will get the same weapons. Specifically the boss weapons. The worlds and bosses are largely randomly generated and they drop loot specific to each boss and sometimes in the manner in which you kill that boss. Its entirely possible to beat the game and not see the same bosses/weapons someone else did

So any kind of improvements you make is .... worthless. We tried to farm a little in low level zones but nope - they are all the same as it was - 2 shots - thats it. You can rebind your keys. You have to bring it to something else first though. For example, I have healing on F, switch weapons on Q, and weapon mod on MB4.

I've been waiting for this, wheres my popcorn lol I'm very very interested to see how mack likes this. I've loved the game since I picked it up. I play it on a 960, on medium at a consistent 40. Also due to the procedurally generated world I never fought that boss it was all close range for the first couple of bosses. And I chose the ranged starting class. I like and dislike the procedurally generated world. It makes thing interesting but like I had a really good roll fir the world the first time for the campaign, but I fudged up a player choice, made three new characters and havent seen that npc since

Some interesting ideas but with all the new mechanics arriving broken or destroying the balance, I am going to give the game a couple of months to sort itself out before trying again .

The stamina bar can get empty sure, but you can basically roll around non-stop because it recharge pretty fast. it has only around 0.3 sec delay.

Mac did you figure out the puzzle to open the temple door @ 4:52 some real cool armour in there. if you get it wrong the enemies spawn but the floor plates unlock the temple. lots of really cool hidden puzzles in this game.

I wish this game supported co-op split screen like the new game Outward, this game would be perfect for split-screen especially with the procedual environments change. Outward lets you split-screen, I thought it really added some thing to the game which was a bit like this game play wise. Some times you just want to play with friends on the couch, zone out, talk and play games, I don't know why developers think people don't want split-screen any more.

I think the reason they added trash mobs in boss fights is because most bosses are melee and it's relatively easy to kill bosses while strafing the area and just shooting and running. Ads mix this up and force you to focus more than the boss. Also, no other real way to get ammo during a boss fight. Ads in boss fights essentially are there to balance the fight and give you ammo.

Agreed. Though I hated the first boss I fought because its Ads were those explodey boys. They'd rush me from behind while the boss ran at me from the front. Got sandwich killed so many times due to explosions stunning me.

There are a lot of games that have no hip-fire, or a specific control to enter a real "aim mode" (resident evil, theHunter, Hunt: Showdown), but these are games with a specific feel so their decision to have no hip-fire seems to be intentional to give more emphasis on "horror" based shoot and controlling distances to enemies.

I killed the ent with a shotgun... hes easy to strafe around. You can also get creative and use the taunt mod to taunt the exploders to damage the boss and run around under him when he mortars you to damage it. I love your reviews and opinions tho even if we agree to disagree on this one.

Hard-bound keys? What year is this? 31 a.u.c? And that's the *first* review I even hear mention this. (No, I haven't sought them out for this game, but I've read/watched a handful I happened across) Oh well, looks generally interesting, but apparently has to many poor design choices to buy it right now. Here's to hoping the devs will fix stuff like... really, hard-bound keys? edit: Thank you, Mack, for actually laying out how the control scheme works. This is such a *huge* part of any game, yet I rarely see it addressed in any satisfactory way any more. Hell, half the reviewers seem to not even care if they used kb+m or a controller to play, let alone see it necessary to mention it.

I rebound melee attack to my side mouse button so that I don't accidentally swing my weapon if I try to panic shoot. Helps a ton, and prevents death. I've never really enjoyed Souls like games... but I'm loving Remnant. Great game with a good amount of content from a AA developer. Also holy shit the beginning area gives me Fallout vibes. Even the terminals in the game are just like in Fallout. Environments are great as well. Personally I like the procedural levels, but the tile system they use can definitely be a bit cookie cutter at times.

I think Mack should try Sekiro. It's Dark Souls except not as silly (with the neigh infinite rolling and "waiting-it-out" type gameplay). It encourages more aggressive and reactive play compared to Dark Souls which I personally believe is much more fun.

You melee attack when you don't ads is because you can quickly stagger an enemy that charge you without having to go through a switch weapon animation. It's design to have a better reaction time. It's really not that bad.

I think of the gameplay more like resident evil, you can't hipfire in resident evil, too. And personally, I didn't have any problems with that mechanic.

This really looks and feels like a Darksiders sequel that they turned into its own game. Darksiders game you fight demons in cartoony apocalypse cities and you have both melee weapons and guns. With guns the camera is exactly in the same place as in this game when you're aiming. The UI also resembles them a lot, plus the character you were planned to play as in the 4th game only used guns. The levels look like they would fit in a Darksiders game perfectly. I'm not complaining about it, its just very interesting if thats what really happened.

I'm used to games like Last of Us that you can't shoot from the hip (R2 reloads instead when you aren't aiming), this is definitely a limitation of consoles with limited buttons but I don't mind it and I immediately got the controls down with Remnant

There are s 100% as stated by the devs. There is even a ring called the evasion ring that relates to the s. I assume this reviewer is on PC? The day one patch should have taken care of most of the bugs like the progression bug and performance issues. This guy must have been playing the VIP weekend version without the patch.

They need to copy warframe controls for the hipfire, just have a melee button that brings up the weapon. I like the look of this though, I think I'll pick it up when it's had a little more time in the oven though.

I love your reviews most of the time, and I generally agree. But on this one I’m very much in the opposite camp; I’m loving this game. I don’t mind no hip fire, resident evil has gotten away with it for years and no one minds. I also love the da style combat, and the fact I have to choose the correct weapon for a boss. I can tell you’re not a fan of Souls like games, and that’s fine. To each their own I suppose, but you’re missing out on an awesome sub genre.

I'm having quite a bit of fun with this and i'd recommend buying it if you like these types of games. As far as the design and not being able to hip fire, i kind of like it, took me 10 minutes to get used to and you don't have to weapon swap. Only major problem is if you have a higher level friend that joins, the world will scale to that person which makes it one shot city so thats something they need to fix. Running a 2080ti at 4k got 60fps solid. Really enjoying it, multiplayer is way more fun and you can join public games ect.

Maybe it was in an update, but some things you say are of dubious accuracy. Eg: the F key most certainly does rebind. As did all the keys I intended to alter. It even has support for multiple mouse thumb buttons, which isnt common. Also, hipfire is again definitely not in all shooters. Ever played a Resident Evil game? State of Decay? Its neither uncommon nor an issue. Failing to get used to it is an indicator of you either not liking the design decision or you being unable to accomodate for it. Personally, I think in this game it works fine and I never noticed it as an issue. Its not a feature that "should" be in a game though. Its a design decision intended to specifically force the player into taking a specific approach to the shooting. Outside of that, I more or less agree with the review.

First person? I mean I would LOVE to fight eldritch monsters with baseball bats and gun shooting but for a souls style game its kinda hard to make cause we (humanity as a whole) still didnt figure how to make first person melee feel trully amazing and rolls would be replaced with funny dashes that stunlock you for a bit. Id just keep this as is and play kf2 when I want to fight hordes in first person.

Have to be careful when you moan everything is the same then moan when they change things..... I actually liked the innovation of the aim down sights to shoot and hip fire doing melee... I personally found it easy to adapt to and creates some real good close combat hit and roll away moves with real fast reaction times due to the changes.
