My guess would be that the non campaign version of Quarantine Sector has always looked like this. Given that the EDZ was upcycled from D1 and that D1 quality assests appear in the playable space, this could represent a transitional state early in D2's development? Then they just reused this level geometry for the Red War mission without touching the patrol zone iteration.

Fun fact about the crashed Cabal ship at 5:56, it is a D1 model and I believe the reason why the textures aren't as good as normal is because it is also using D1 textures. The Cabal corpse earlier on is also a D1 model :) Hopefully I can get to this area sooner rather than later. I have some of my own theories as to the purpose of the area but it's so fascinating seeing other people's theories too

I'm sure someone has already said this, but those D1 looking cabal models are all over in the game. Some are in the gulch by the dead tank, one is in the Europa Pyramid from the Witch Queen mission, some on Nessus in the Insight Terminus

I've always thought Hangmans Pass' secret tunnel would have originally led to Quarantine Sector 236 in the Red Wars versions we got. Locations on the Map kinda line up. This like someone said may have been a D1 unfinished version. It's very much like a version of the Blackened Forest that we got in Red War. There's the buildings you were at which are similar to the buildings we came out of from the mine, the previous zone being QS236. Then there's the crashed Cabal ships which are present in Red War Blackened Forest. Maybe this old version was going to lead us the the dark forest and the small Shard, a portal appears, takes us to the ledge area, get pulled, end up in the Shard Area, then possibly subsequently Galaxy Pools where we may have bathed in the waters to get back our light or meet a being of Pure Light who gives it to us. Like who knows, besides Bungie of course lol

2:53 This was because this area was reused as a part of season of the chosen's seasonal battlegrounds that are no longer in the game..... You literally had to take a savathun portal to get there. The lighting and spooky skybox were not in the red war version. 7:35 This is a level size reference. Bungo has been using this technique since at least Reach with the infamous noble six biped.

I'm gonna guess that this has probably been in the game since the EDZ was pushed from D1 to D2. The D1 guardian models paired with the D1 Models for the Cabal ship and Legionary make me think this is the case. This is a super cool spot and thanks for showing us! :D

the Cabal being white is not the only instance as I remember whenever Destiny uses ‘immobile’ cabal, all in D1 and 2 are devoid of legion colors

The dev cube looks a lot like the cubes they hide the bosses for non living bosses inside, like the one from DSC that people glitched to, to finish the encounter super quickly when the raid first came out It's just very weird that it is hollow, since most dev cubes are solid and not hollow unless they stored something inside them like an enemy, very very weird.

The low poly guardian models are usually used early on to help the devs get a sense of scale when making the environment. the scannable in the cabal ship is a thing thats seen in lot of places in the game. its not a thing that was menat to be scanned but rather it shares the same asset of something else in the game that is scannable.

That Cabal ship and scannable I remember from the shard mission or at least a variation of it, where the fallen them came crawling out of the ground to signify they were the enemies of the area, always felt like it was a part they spent way too much time on but tbf it was the super showcase mission so it did make some sense

Isn't there a program out there that let's you view the map files extracted from the game? Couldn't you theoretically extract the files for that area from a vanilla year 1 version of the game to see?

Stuff like this is why I don't buy Bungie's talk about "we can't make the game too big". There's a TON of unused space, even for places you can still access normally. If only just for exploration purposes, there's no reason they couldn't just populate a lot of these places and put minor fetch quests in them - like the way Skyrim did radiant quests that you could never really run out of.
