Oh My Goodness! What a Lot of Elbow Grease. I thought I was Crazy, you Win in a Good Way! You exemplify the old saying, "Where there's a Will there's a Way!" Great Job for a talented amateur!! That was a Lot of Work!!

It was a lot of work that’s for sure, but it was the only way I could update that ugly spot in my house for under $100. It really is the focal point. I have loved it so much that now I forget hope much elbow grease was required. I would have loved to just hire it done but that just wasn’t in the budget so I decided what I had was time and I could consider it my line a daily puzzle and workout all in one until I figured it out and loved the result. It was definitely worth it.

The paint sticks are a great idea. I’m working on this project now and I was about to buy baseboards for trim to hide the gaps. I like this idea better. Thanks!

This is the exact same staircase design in my house. I was thinking of ripping my carpet up in the next couple months.

I definitely had to do a lot of sanding to even out the wood underneath, so make sure you have a good sander, but it’s so worth it! Good luck! 😊

I've been putting down laminate flooring in my house and was dreading the stairs because of the spindles. Thanks for the video, I think we will stair or paint them once we rip up the terrible carpet.

Great job! I have a question. My house has runner on oak staircase, I am thinking of removing the runner and wonder if there’ll be a lot of holes left on the staircase. The runner was professionally installed 20 years ago. Thanks for your help.
@DIYIsMyHappyPlace

It most likely will have holes but adding putty, sanding and other stain or paint will cover any imperfections you may find. As shown in my video I even filled in the larger holes along the edge by the wall with paint stirring sticks. Then I puttied and sanded them. I can’t see them at all now.

How did you get the carpet out from under the spindles? Did you take the spindles off?
@DIYIsMyHappyPlace
@DIYIsMyHappyPlace 3 жыл бұрын
No, I didn’t because I didn’t want to try to figure out how to put spindles back, so I just cut the carpet out all the way around the spindles. The carpet was stapled down so to pull it up I had to use pliers and a lot of muscle. It was definitely a workout for the day.

@@DIYIsMyHappyPlace thanks- turns out after I ripped up the first step, I found particle board used for the treads. Which I think won’t look good painted- so I guess I’m going to nix the project. 😩

With the carpet remnant don't you have to worry about it fraying at the edges? What did you do to prevent that?
@DIYIsMyHappyPlace

Reworking or trying to rework poor workmanship is quite a challenge. I would've done it differently but that's me. I think with what you had to work with and not wanting to get yourself hundreds of dollars in debt, you did a pretty good job. I think it looks MUCH better than before.

what to do with the landing area? my landing has carpet, have no idea whats under it
@DIYIsMyHappyPlace
@DIYIsMyHappyPlace 4 жыл бұрын
Mine does not have a landing area, but if it did, I would still risk it. I feel like a landing area even if it ends up being nothing but plywood, could be refinished, or painted to look like hardwood. My steps were made of a very rough hardwood. I sanded and them and added wood putty to the holes until they were smooth. Then I stained right over it. Good luck!

@@DIYIsMyHappyPlace thanks. pulled up the carpet on my landing appears to be raw concrete or stucco. gonna be a massive job
@DIYIsMyHappyPlace
@DIYIsMyHappyPlace 4 жыл бұрын
@@johnmiller9219 It might be worth getting wood planks for that section rather than trying to work the concrete into looking like wood. Or you could go with a new look and simply paint the concrete to blend in and embrace the concrete/stucco as a new design element. At least until you are ready to take it on. I think painted concrete can be fabulous. I will say that whenever I have a surprise during my DIY projects, which happens often, I know I create extra work for myself, but I keep telling myself it's worth it in the end. Many times I have tried new ways to do things over and over until I am satisfied with the results. A square peg into a round hole seems to be a common occurrence. I look at what I have, study it out, and try to figure out how I can make it work. Good Luck!
