My only advice would be that before you start removing walls between bedrooms you sit with an architect who can take your list of wants, needs, and desires and compare it with the current layout and space available and come up plan implement in stages. When my parents built their house they didn't use an architect and as a result the house now has a lot of quirks: the master bedroom is the smallest bedroom in the house, the width of the hallways failed to take the width of the trim work into account which prevented proper furniture placement from happening. An architect can find a way to preserve as much of the wood work and built ins as possible with maintaining the character of the house. Also, given the age of the house, I suspect the house is full of lead paint and asbestos which require special disposal procedures.

Hey Cole exciting times ahead of you! Suggestion. if you're going to preserve and reuse your woodwork, when you remove it, make sure you somehow label each piece so you know which room it came from and number them and wrap parts together that you'll know that this trim goes to x door or that trim goes to y window. Putting molding back can be quite a jigsaw puzzle so if they're labeled and numbered in some sort of order, it's so much easier to re-install!! I'd also like to suggest if you remove any items (like light fixtures, etc.) that you do not plan to reuse and are in good shape, please consider selling or donating to Habitat so that someone else can use it! Good luck with your remodel!

I've remodeled a couple of houses both lathe/plaster and drywall. Word of advice. Get a fan, not a little 16 inch box fan but a 3 to 5 foot industrial fan that moves a lot of air. I know it's winter but put the fan in an open window in the room you are working. Open a couple of windows downstairs or in a room nearby for air movement. That fan will blow most of the dust right out the window and you won't have as much drifting through the house. Close as many doors as you can and put a damp towel on the floor to block the door/floor gap. That will help keep dust from entering other rooms. You are lucky in that you have radiators too. Forced air furnace would suck up dust and distribute it throughout the house.

Plan for frustrations and disappointment, it'll be a Pandora's Box, possibly a nightmare. Good luck, you'll need it. I'd help but but I'm some 375 miles away to your NE and can't reach you from here with all the snow and whatnot. On that cheery note I look forward to what should be an awesome result once you are done. I'm pulling for you, and 😎 my growing Pit Viper collection thanks you 😁

For those sections above the round attic windows, I'd suggest trying to do vinyl shakes, they look even better then cedar shakes/shingles and are made of vynil so they last and you can get them in many colors

Yes! I did this on a major remodel of a house built around 1900, all the gables that come out of the roof are done in vinyl shake, it looked fantastic and still does because paint doesn’t flake off of vinyl 😁

Cole your grandparents would be very proud of you the house will look magnificent when it’s all done. They don’t make houses like that anymore they don’t put any pride in new builds thanks for this Journey your taking us on.

Trust me, my fellow OCD compadre, a 2nd floor master bedroom with a sizeable walk-in closet will be a game changer to organizing cloths and clutter.

I'd love to turn the small bathroom into the laundry room and the room next door into the new bathroom. Keep them separate. How exciting you have so many options. So much beauty in the way it's been built. Looking forward to watching the reno videos.

If your going to put a washing machine on the second floor be sure to install a tray with a drain under it to prevent water damage if it ever leaks. I speak from experience!! 👍👍

and separate the tray with rubber matting or similar to make a floating section of floor to absorb all the vibrations.

And reinforce the floor to hold the extra weight. Especially for if the washer goes off balance bad enough that it jumps around during the spin cycle.

Just wondering.... as you remove the walls and change some of the homes interior, do your thoughts wonder in to the memory’s of the times you spent with your family and your grandpa in that home? I would think so. Sentimental things ! Perhaps you could resurrect old photos and creat a past to present wall portrait to honor how far your families journey has brought you! Really like your enthusiasm as you take on the projects that you do.

Every time I see a demo on lath and plaster, I try to wrap my head around how much time and effort it must have taken to nail in all that lath by hand. It's unreal how modern power tools have changed everything.
