After stepping through a rotten spot on my deck, I am demoing it. 64 year old widow who helped build our house. Yes, my leg looks like I was in a wreck, hence the demo. 😂 I bought a Cresent bar last summer. This thing is amazing!!!! I am able to pull the boards up with no problem! It was well worth the money. I also have a deck wrecker, but, I’m not even going to use it. Wish me luck!!!!

Looking fantastic, John! I think the skirting looks great. Although in my area, I'd consider adding some sort of screening behind to keep critters out - mice and snakes can easily fit through those gaps. You may not have to worry about that where you are though. Can't wait to see part 2!
@JohnBuildsIt2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! The gaps are smaller than the lattice atleast. I was surprised how clean it was under the deck with no remains of anything haha. We’re in the country but thankfully we don’t really have an issue with them getting in the house, which I’m most concerned with
@totallycv23884 ай бұрын
Nice Job. I'd recommend Solid hyde stain vs pain in the future. 100x better on all levels for decking, especially if using pressure treated floorboards. Less chipping/peeling, generally cheaper, and easy to run a deck sander (rental) or a belt sander over it every 5-7 years to prep for a restain. In this case I watched your next vid using PVC floorboards, which turned out great.

I really like the clean newer look. I have a micro-mini version of this coming up next year. Not to make you nervous, but be careful around the bees. It is possible to develop an allergy over time, and the fact that you swelled up may be an indication of that. Not saying it’s definite, but might be worth consulting a medical professional instead of listening to some internet moron like me 😏😏. As always, enjoyed the video!

That looks just like my deck, size and all, and I’ve been meaning to see what to do with it since it’s a daunting task. I was just about ready to get that bull bar and here it is in your video! The thing is I have all screws, but I imagine it’s still the only way to go and I can just try to use the nail head puller since the screws should be weak in the joists?
@JohnBuildsIt5 ай бұрын
Just depends on the condition of the old screws. Sometimes they’ll just break right off, which is fine. Or they could still be holding good and really tear up joists and it may be better to just unscrew them

Helped a friend rebuild a deck. Previous owner had a contractor “spruce” it up. Painted it with interior household paint to save money and make it look good to sell. How did I know? The extra paint was left in the garage. There was so much rot we ended up tearing down the whole deck and rebuilding it.

It’s almost impossible to prevent paint from peeling on treated decking.
@janking27622 ай бұрын
If you wait until it’s really dry (;check with a moisture meter), solid deck stain will work just fine. I did this with a 35 year old PT SYP decking. It didn’t peel but will abrade, so, needs reapplication every year or two. But that’s really fast. Did a 12x 60 ft. deck with a roller in under two hours.

Looks good .. when I build and sometimes rebuild decks I use a 1/4” composite spacer between rim joist to allow for water drainage and to prevent wood rot in the future… composite fascia would look good instead of paint but do what’s in your budget .. 🇺🇸👊🏼🪚🔨👊🏼✌🏼🇺🇸

In the long run it's cheaper to spend the $$$ on improved materials rather than making a run down to the lumber store. No more painting, staining, sealing and then eventually having to replace the whole thing. Also, you tend to not discover you need to replace the deck by putting your foot through it.

Why waste all the time removing all the paint to then remove them. This was a waste of. Some solid boards. I have a 31 year old deck and stripped it and replaced two boards. I then painted with the the rust oleum thick paint. Saved thousands and hours of labor. He said the wood was solid and the rails were strong. Be sure to use the protective tape on the joists and the ledger board.

I peeled off a few pieces of paint for the video… and several boards were rotten lol they needed replaced.

Great job! But please, never apply paint to a deck. Doing so will only create a major maintenance headache, but also create an ice rink surface if/when it is covered by snow in the winter. Apply a high quality penetrating oil and/or a penetrating oil stain. Prep work between applications will be much, much easier than having to scrape peeling paint.
