I advise you to put the power injector in a sealed box. I myself use the MikroTik Lhg LTE 4g kit on my site, but I fixed it on the house. A very powerful and reliable device.

Put your antenna box at house end up at about 4 to 6 metres and clear some of the trees shrubs out of line of sight and things will improve. I know you like too do most things on the cheap, but i would like to see that battery in a housing off the ground. Metal box with a roof on it to keep the snow and rain out for the long term. Just a thought Morten.......................................

I have put the WiFi bridge on my House,, 3 meters up-ish. This thing can do 300Mbps,, and I am only using like 40Mbps,, the signal is plenty strong for that.

Check the LTE band configuration on the MikroTik, some bands may work better than other. Also use widest channels for the wifi.

1:44 You will definitely get better performance if you cut the vegetation out of the line of sight. The water in the vegetation is terrible for WiFi connections. As it gets more dense you will see unexplained dropouts and slow signal (error retries). Just that small spot at the top of the hill which is blocking, even if it doesn't seem like much, you'll really notice slowness and long dropouts when the wind blows the plants back and forth through the signal path. Its probably working very well as is but it will work better if you get rid of that little bit of veg (it will eventually block the signal completely, probably surprisingly soon actually). That is really awesome techieness, I have to admit that I may be slightly envious.

I think you would be right, if I was at the maximum speeds that the WIFI bridge can do. (300Mbps I think) but as the internet is more like 40Mbps,, I think it is fine,, Even with a bit of Green Wifi :-)
@CarlosJOlivQ
@CarlosJOlivQ Жыл бұрын
Will be fine, I have seen worst without LOS for 5 km for spectrum of 5 GHz. At worst will get 90Mbps if the trees get wet and obstruct the LOS. Not a good a practice because attenuation, freznel zone and all of that, but will be fine. I would totally change the cable from charger to the battery for a thicker one to ensure in case of short the internal fuse does propperly blow, the antenna been unattended should have the best protection available considering the vegetation.

It’s nice to see it work. I guess there’s room for improvement if you align the antennas better. Perhaps a speedtest up the mountain could either confirm or deny this.

@csparty11

@@MyPlayHouse Yes you tested this at the mountain in a hurry but the dish was not aimed properly, also you should be able to get more than 15 dB SNR.. But it might also be a cap from the provider or the overbooking at the tower itself. Anyways 30 Mbit is not much, you should consider testing a couple of things: -Test the maximum speed at night, see if you are getting higher speeds, over 100 Mbit should be attainable if there is no cap. -Go up the hill and test with the 4G dongle you used in the house in your window and ofcourse a laptop and test the speed also check the signal strengh. If you see that is higher or gives you a better speed, you know your dish is aimed poorly. -Also test the speeds directly from the dish again, there might alot of improvement possible. remember a dish has a small opening angle and needs to be pointed much more accurately than a simple flat antenna. And last but not least test the maximum speed your wifi link can do. I would mount the wifi antenna on a pole attached to the wall of the house just above the roof. And like everybody else already said try to cut the vegatation because if are away for 3 months, things can grow fast. BTW, you got all these security camera. i'm asuming you want to keep an eye from danmark, then you would need permanent internet access.

if you can, set an auto reboot for each device overnight - can help with slowness and lockup - those wifi bridges look like re-housed tp-link CPE devices

Cool setup! I'm a big MikroTik fan myself and have few of their switches for my home lab. I realize this is proof of concept and getting things tweaked as time goes on. It may help if the wifi antennas are bit higher to clear the vegetation so you wouldn't have to cut them down.

Morten, Get a small mikrotik router for in your portugese house, and you can do a speedtest from your Mikrotik LTE Router and your home over the wireless bridge. Those aliexpress wireless bridges are pretty terrible, tell you fast speed but actual theoughput is junk (packet-loss, etc). Even a $20 mikrotik RB will easily do 150-200Mbps on a wimpy MIPS processor
@MyPlayHouse

You are missing the point, that I did test this on top of the mountain in the last video : kzbin.info/www/bejne/hoLEeWBppMmYbK8 and it does not look like I am losing anything in the terrible junk aliexpress wireless bridges. They seem to send the same speed to my house. :-)

Maybe the rain will not be a problem for that cable, it only has to be a little longer to have a droop loop. Sunlight will probably shred insulation to pieces over time. I suggest outdoor rating cables for a hilltop instalation.

This looks really cool. One thing that you should do to give better accessibility, is to add a ESPHome to monitor the Usage and the battery levels. If you then link this to Home assistant you can then get some pretty graphs which you can look at on a dashboard at your house.

Did you use outdoors Ethernet cables and connectors right? Usually they are black! UV after some time eats the plastics and when cables fail and you’ll check and see the individual wires swaying in the wind 🌬️ Outdoors Ethernet connectors usually have a screw connectors over the regular ones, to prevent water ingress. On the batteries, since your battery box isn’t sealed, put a plastic container or a jar 🫙 with silica gel inside to absorb humidity and from time to time check if it is full the replace it. Some anti corrosion spray (see on the car auto shop) on the battery contacts would also help.

Nice that it works Morten👍 Mabe I'm wrong but I think you probably will have a faster speed with your equipment on a 4G network. If I were you I would write a mail to Vodafone and ask what's the maximum 4G speed expected at the location around the cell tower where you aiming to. If you really want to test the wifi speed correctly you should use a SBC like RPi or other thas has a 1gb port with iperf3 on it to test the true speed. Love your IT video's my friend keep them coming. Good luck.

The RJ45 and POE injector wrapped in plastic is not a good idea. The change in temp. will create condensation. You need a longer patch cable and have it in a box. If the box is open under and parts that need to be protected are entered from the under then you are good. And/or make some drip loops. Also, the ethernet cable exposed to the sun need to be outdoor rated. Or the sun will damage the cable and it will crack.
