This is actually the best memories I learned in my elementary days. Starting grade 3 to 6 ( before the new grade 7 and up was introduced), every student is given a garden bed to maintain and plant vegetables. So everyone take their time planting and share during harvest. While around the school, we already have different varieties of pomelo & avocado trees bearing fruits (planted by those ahead of us). Grade 5 & 6 will boys will lead the fruit harvest and distributed to each class so each student get one and bring home after school. Same with the vegetables that the teachers planted, usually squash, opo and lots of pechay. Usually 1st harvest will be distributed to the lower grades. So if you have more than 2 siblings, your parents will be happy when you bring home 2 bundles of pechay😂

We have many teachers like that. It reminds of my teachers. Kudos on the local government for supporting the organic farming initiative. We had similar things in my province up north, decades ago. It seems many Filipinos from my generation and our parents' generation still appreciate farming and gardening. That's part of the reason why many Filipinos dream of owning their small plot of land. You can feel the joy the kids have on the things they do and have. They dream big for their families and community. The kids are awesome.

"Hats off to all involved! This serves as a prime illustration of sustainable education. It's imperative to place agriculture at the forefront of every school curriculum, hand in hand with embracing new technological advancements. Let's empower our youth with the skills and insights necessary to lead a sustainable life through agriculture." "As an educator, I've noticed that agriculture often receives less recognition compared to other professions and fields of work. However, we must acknowledge that while the advancements in technology are significant, agriculture should take precedence as it serves as our fundamental source of sustenance. Many individuals opt for office-based careers, which is perfectly fine. Yet, it's crucial to underscore the significance of agricultural knowledge and skills. Ultimately, regardless of our chosen occupation, we all rely on agriculture to put food on our tables. Just imagine if everyone pursued office jobs and no one tended to our fields-surely, then we'd grasp the vital importance of agriculture. It's essential to instill in our youth an appreciation for agriculture, even in small ways, as it can have a positive impact on promoting sustainable living."

We were taught how to plant, cook jams and jellies(guava because it’s the fruit commonly found in our area), make crafts using local materials. In the afternoon, if we were lucky enough we would hitch on trucks that haul bananas as there were banana plantations surrounding our area. If not, then we would walk and stopped-by in our former mayor’s house and ate the white stuff insdie the cococnuts which they use for copra making. Now, I am living here in France, I walk my kids from school going back home. Best exercise and it is always nice to smell fresh air specially in the spring time. While our efforts were not very well rewarded (when we showed our teacher our okra, she told us we could go smoke 'em -- they were picked too late), at least we learned to appreciate and respect the effort that goes into producing our food, and are more conscientious about food waste.

Its not just in the philippines, you can see it in anywhere in the world. Some schools that are near or in the mountains teaches more practical subjects than academic. Especially in areas that have ethnic groups its enough for students to know how to read and write then they teaches them practical ways for them to live.
