Great way to introduce work outsourcing to cheaper 3rd world countries. Why pay someone more when you can pay less? And since you’re not in the office, what difference does it make? It’s a global economy now…

Nobody is realizing anything lmfao. Do you really think companies haven’t considered fully remote before? The people that run these companies are way smarter than you and there’s a reason they haven’t done it in the past. It’s because they want full control over their employees. I laugh when I see comments like yours as if it’s some sudden epiphany

Cities were meant to be the concentration of convenient living. Jobs, amenities, walkable convenience. However over the years, abusive real estate practices, attempting to squeeze ever last cent out of the populace, lead to an inequitable distribution of building use and hyper-concentration of office space vs everything else that actually made urban living attractive. Now they shall suffer the consequences, and eventually revert to sustainable ratios

I work for a larger company (~1000 people worldwide). March 13th (remember, Friday 13th) 2020 we were all asked to stay home on the next Monday. We went "back to the office" a few months here and there but eventually it was up until January this year that management got together and started making a plan that could work for most people. I have been back for maybe 7 days or so since January 1st. First of all, there is nobody, the place is "dead" and it is such a beautiful office! Second, there is a security risk of working alone, if something should happen, not saying it will. The parking lot is empty, people are rollerblading. I enjoyed long hours in a massage chair, you know feeling like "home alone"? Still the heat has to be on, the cooling has to function and I can just only imagine the lease payments.... Next week we are going to a hybrid model, I think it is the most preferred model. With longer days coming they "ask" staff to work in the office on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday and enjoy Monday and Friday working from home. Working from home has become such a fabulous way to get things done. We are fully zoomed and teamed in. But there is the huge cost of keeping an office building, there was talk about abandoning one unit. Our neighbours have been absent as well. Maybe 5 people total out of a staff of over 150 in office workers. Our office hosts ~150-200 people. Wearing a mask is our preference or responsibility, if you are sick stay home and otherwise enjoy life again. Vendors are starting up their pre-pandemic ways of going to lunch with customers. It is not that we are not trying, it just does not feel the same. The vibe is not there, yet. The traffic, hectic B.C. and always jamming, now my commute takes 10 minutes less because there is barely traffic. The cities are quieter, yet there seems to be more crime, shootings and things going wrong.

Also, IF and I mean IF you are a "little under the weather", most people will just work anyways since they have the comfort of home and do not have to worry about the stress of going in and making others sick. So the company will get more productivity that way.

The "hybrid" model is to just get people used to the idea of having to come back to the office. So they don't lose employees. As soon as the recession comes and employees lose leverage they will require 5 days a week and overtime.

Work in a metro area and this is real. It's so sad to see all the lunch joints struggle now, when pre-covid lines used to frequently roll out door during peak lets-break-out-the-office-for-lunch hours. Excellent Pastrami on rye sandwiches may not survive without a solid workday crowd. Truly hope it comes back.

Work From Home is not a gift. If you live in a large region, you are not saving money in housing. If you relocate, your compensation will change to reflect the market of your new home. I have the flexibility to work more hours working from home. In the agreement with my employer, I have to have a dedicated room for work (which I pay for). Other than a laptop, I pay for all the expenses associated with an office (out of pocket). In the SF Bay Area, typical office workspace were loud penalty boxes unfit for productivity.

Yeah the company that I work for is going to start doing hybrid work, we have to start going to the office 2 days a week. Now the issue with this is that we have quite a few people working from home who don't live in Toronto, and a portion of those people aren't even in Ontario, so they gave us a radius from around the office, if you live within this radius you have to start going to the office twice a week, if you're not, you wont have to. So people who work from say Alberta won't have to come to the office, but people who live as far as Mississauga will have to come in twice a week.

I still prefer in office personally, (yes I am a developer and do have the option to work from home). But in office I have less temptation to snack at all times, less temptation to just watch lew later in between meetings, and a better separation of work and home life. I love the office. It keeps me focused and thin. I also don't have to consume my own electricity as hard as I would if i were home all day. I also really like leaving work, getting home, and knowing I'm done for the day. Also, the in-person collaboration is unbeatable. No one is actually listening in a teams/zoom meeting, and that's a fact.

Once companies figure out a legal Cost of living (COF) matrix graph for work and pay they will not care where you work remotely because if you’re company HQ is based out of San Francisco where the COF calls for let’s say $10k a month but you decide to remotely work in the Bahamas where the COF is let’s say $2k a month the company will pay you $2k a month until you move to another location where the COF is higher. But that that point you will need permission to move…the CFO and CEO will be loving the Green On the bottom line due to the employees willingest to save the company money…when it’s legal nothing will stop them or the employee from working remotely forever

WFH is the future and there is no level employee won't stoop to pay wise to maintain that work/life balance. Inflation is no joke and then coupled with time drainers like traffic, small talk at the water cooler, going to get lunch and back to the office, cost on gas to get around, maintance on the car, insurance costs, all thet above, it just makes no sense to do this anymore if you don't have to.

4:17 - Great title but why didn't you touch upon the reasons why and how 'Remote Work is Impacting Cities More Than We Thought'? Just reading vacancy stats off a website doesn't actually tell us about the impact non-occupancy is having. (note - whether deliberate or accidental, if a title draws potential viewers yet no conclusion is drawn or answers given, then that title is 'clickbait') So I'm going to offer insights I have, which may serve the curiosity of other viewers who were 'clickbaited' into pressing the 'Play' button. I want you to imagine a bustling city with extremely high office occupancy. Imagine the early morning and evening commute by millions of workers and how much revenue that brings into the city. Imagine the lunch hours when millions of people visit a local coffee shop, sandwich store, grocery store, dry cleaners, gift store (there's always somebody in the office celebrating a birthday, a birth, an anniversary, etc.) and a host of other businesses that enjoy or rely on public 'footfall'. Just 100,000 individuals each spending an average of 25 bucks would equate to two and a half million dollars during a lunch hour. Now imagine a high percentage of those workers no longer travelling into the city. Think of all the hundreds of thousands of dollars no longer being spent either on mass transit systems or in small and medium-sized businesses. Think of those landlords who raise the rent of businesses to compensate for the losses they experience on their other vacant properties. I'm certain there are many more examples of 'impact' and I'd be interested to hear other people's insights.

KZbin personalities are so out of touch on this topic. Nothing sucks more than sitting at home alone, isolated, and dealing with an incident. The pure WFH model is not a panacea, and not for everyone. There is a large cohort of Gen Z and Millennials who want to go into an office and collaborate with their coworkers. Not everyone has built a career, or has existing professional relationships from before 2020.
