The best less intrusive way to add these remote ID modules to a home-built drone is by having it power up by the Lipo balance charging connector and transmit a beacon or having it transmit back to your smart phone app via wi-fi or Bluetooth for GPS (might not work well for long range though). I may just use a remote ID with GPS sit next to me powered up with its own battery while my drone is in the air just to comply with Remote ID, like Bardwell said on a few videos back, its not like there are FAA officers patrolling the areas scanning for Remote ID compliance on the actual drone.
@richardamiss70007 ай бұрын
I feel inclined to point out that FAA active policing has never been the concern. The real concern is that "if" an incident were to occur, then the drone could be confiscated as evidence and the compliance factors would all be tallied up for fines. Having a compliant RID module is one less thing to hit your wallet on top of the misconduct. Same with SMART, FCC reg, etc.

One can sugarcoat it all one wants, but that doesn't change the fact it is outrageous government overreach. Not cheap, either. However the US RID rules are positively friendly compared to what the CAA are proposing here in the UK, which is (a) no weight limit, applies to everything, below 250g as well, in theory down to whoop if outdoors, (b) networked from the word go apart from defined limited exceptions where there is no coverage, and (c) actively connected, ie can stop takeoff.

I can see the argument about it around airports or above a certain AGL. I also fly people carrier aircraft and if I hit a drone during final I'd want to know who to talk to. If the FC is connected to Configurator at boot time, we request the full satellite information list, so that we can populate the detailed satellite information list on the left side of Configurator's GPS tab. It's great that this module is an option for those that want, or need to comply. However I feel that paying $69 for an esp32 and a couple of bits is way over priced. Also the basic code to program such a module is available in the public domain. The price should be under $20.00, and still the developer will be making a reasonable margin.
@JoshuaBardwell7 ай бұрын
The problem with this argument (as I keep having to say every time this comes up) is that in order to be a legal RemoteID device, you have to jump through a bunch of regulatory hoops. That is what makes them expensive, not the BOM cost. You can build this EXACT device for $20 and it will not be a legal RemoteID device because you did not get it tested to verify that it complies with the ASTM standard for RemoteID devices; you did not submit it to the FAA for approval; you are not doing a zillion other bureaucratic bullshit tasks that are required. All of these tasks cost money and take time, and that is why nobody is selling a RemoteID device for $20.
@dpkgray7 ай бұрын

Cell phones have latest tech, and are integrated. It does require a small tuned pruned antenna lead about 3in long. It is interchangeable to the quad you are flying. Gets lock within a min, and faster with the BT app when connected. It is wise to put a small ferrite on the leads to the FC and place the GPS ant opposite of the TXV ant on any build.

Let’s say I was a tattoo artist, I was good at tattooing good at art but all of a sudden to do something I was passionate about to now require a full blown license with annual registration fees in order to conduct “Art”. What’s different about a drone is it not art? Yet the government feels it should not be free. This is why I don’t think it’s necassary, and I also think the government is scared and rather than embrace and teach and jump ahead of the world. We sit like men from the 1950’s in council who are scared of change and try to police a situation that then hinders evolution of technology within your own country. Might as well put a small fishing weight in a piece of plastic on your uav and call it RID and just tell the authorities someone sold it to you and said it was one of the ones on the list of certified RID modules. It's pretty much just as good as the real ones.

The ASTM standard does define requirements for detectable range. However, the user is not require to verify that the range is actually achieved in real life. In other words, it seems to me that it would be perfectly legal to wrap the module in tin foil.

The one I use is even smaller - weighs zero grams and doesn't even mount to the drone

So on the other RID modules with GPS modules can you not pass those GPS signals through? I only have 1 gps equipped bird and 7 others to add RID to. (Commercial)

the flight test ez and one of the drone tag units also have gps pass though.

Imagine the outcry if you had to activate rid every time you were carrying a loaded firearm. Not anti 2a at all, but I'm pretty sure guns have endangered, injured and ended a lot more people than drones.

That used to be true until the military got hold of them

Can this one be configured to not be detectable by the consumer scanner apps?

Looking for any STL files for mounting one of these if anyone has a model. I've got a couple variations of drones - some TBS Source One V5, Mario 5 Deadcat. I could modify model to work with the unit on one of these frames.
