I have see several tutorials on how to make selections to avoid fringes and a few that discuss removing the fringes by using remove matting and defringe. However, I have had horrible results with these techniques and usually either resorted to changing the background layer to a different blend mode or painting the fringe and accepting the hard fried edge look and then blurring the mask. The results are barely passable. I appreciate that this tutorial accepts the fact no matter the selection (I used channels to get the best selection possible) there will be some color cast on edges (I know this fact all to well). I am intrigued with the idea of two layers (one for paining outside mask and one for cloning inside). I look forward trying them out with my projects. This is different than anything I tried. Thanks.

I discovered this technique a few months ago by just pure problem solving thinking. I do tons of subject masks for work, and this has done wonders for defringing more than just hair, but also clothing and color decontamination. I always wondered if I was the only one, but of course I was not because Mr. Umesh is a Photoshop guru! So nice to see self-taught skills also being learned by the community!

Great work! When removing a colorful background, you should always look out for and remove color casts as well. In this image you can see a cyan color cast under her arm. It’s pretty easy to remove. Unmesh has a video on that too.

This is the best method of all time!!!! Going forward, this is going to be my selection mask style. It is not real difficult and it gives you amazing and realistic results. I bet after ten tries I will become like second nature to me! Thank you Unmesh for sharing this!!!! You are correct, fringe shows up in about everything. I can see this best used for animals and people. I think channels will work best on landscapes. Your the best buddy! Moonpie

This technique has the advantage of being almost universally applicable. My technique is different, but less univesal. I start by making the best possible selection, never with the classic selection tools, but with the channel method where I try to increase the contrast to the best possible way, without frying the edges. Next, I make two layers using the same mask. The second layer is put in the normal blending mode. For the first layer I try to look for the blending mode that blends in the edges best with the underlaying background (note thus that I never correct fringes without first applying the final background layer). The blending mode depends on the nature of the background. Sometimes multiply helps, but it can be whatever mode. Next, I create a group from the second layer, and apply a mask. To this mask I apply a soft black brush and paint slightly around the edges so that only the blended edges of the first layer become visible. This lets the new background shine perfectly through the edges. If the same blending mode is not usuable for all the edges, cut up your image in pieces. Note that I did not come up with this technique. I thank RawExchange International for this super way of blending images in a new background. I hope this helps. Erwin

Hi gang... anytime I try this the edges always look way too pixelated and choppy, still as if I just used the selection/magic wand tool. Whereas in his videos, even in the color range panel, the images are flawless and the edges are smooth. Obvi we want to start with the highest resolution, but is he using some kind of RAW photo files? Or is simply because I am in PSCs6 and he is in the latest version? Please advise. thank you!! :)

To fix the teal cast on the bottom of her right hand. I usually paint on a clipped layer set to color blending mode some cloned or healing brush samples of fleshtone. Sometimes I need to rotate my clone source to match the grain direction and wish that I cold modify the key command of Shift Alt < or > as the increment is too small. Do you know of a better way/key command to rotate the clone source visually?
@PiXimperfect
@PiXimperfect 5 жыл бұрын
In case you are pressing the shortcut one at a time, try holding it down for a moment, increments will be much faster. To make it even faster open the clone source panel from 'Windows', just click and drag on the rotate value.
