I thankfully had the determination to kill her quicker than my friends, so I didn't lose hope as quickly. I also tried her with no summons and no ashes (don't do that unless you have a dumb amount of bleed). Came prepared, got myself 2 Godskin peelers with seppuku and bleed and sliced the fuck out of her with the jump attack. Worked pretty well bc I got her in like 4-5 hours.

Exactly when I beat her it was similar an abysmal barley made it through phase 1 mistake ridden run I had nothing left except for the physik flask ..... then somehow didn't get hit in the second and couldn't believe I won I thought I was dead for sure .... it felt like a cheat but the 500 deaths I figured I'd earned it .... I can't really explain how it happened I took a few big rips during the transition cutscene and then a flawless phase two somehow happened

A quick tip, during her first phase if you want to have a quick sip just run away from her as far as you can, and then have a sip. She will not chase after you. In second phase tho, you'll have to bait out an attack and heal during that time.

I remember last video you were trying to know more about Malenia. She's Miquella's twin sister. They are the children of Queen Marika and Radagon, the gods you're seemingly trying to replace. Miquella was cursed with being unable to grow/age, which is why he resembles a child, and Malenia was cursed with scarlet rot. Supposedly Millicent and her 3 sisters were born from Malenia's scarlet rot. (←I didn't know this part, the people in the comments told me, thanks guys!) During the war of the shattering, Malenia went toe to toe with her half-brother, Radahn, and inflicted him, along with most of Caelid, with scarlet rot. She's the reason Radahn is pretty much a primal mindless zombie. During that battle, Miquella was kidnapped by Mohg, which is why you see what appeared to be an adult arm in some big egg in Mohg's cutscene. Long story short, empyreans are those eligible to become a god like Marika, Mohg wanted to marry his half-brother Miquella for some sort of power, but he wanted to break Miq's curse and age him. From the looks of it, that failed. Malenia has been waiting for Miquella's return because it is believed he will be reborn.

I like that Malenia in the first phase is actually in no hurry. She just slowly walks towards you, knowing that you're not going anywhere. And when we defeat her in the first phase, she is already much more aggressive in the second, as if we have passed some kind of test that we can defeat her when she is not very serious.

The most important thing is to be calm and keep a cool head. If your getting too angry or making too many mistakes, just take a moment to relax or do something else and come back again. I’m no expert Elden Ring player but this is kind of how I dealt with most of her attacks for P1. It might not be the best as I beat her a while ago, some of this might be shaky. I time stamped it below as well. P2 is similar but she does have new attacks and follow ups, so the punishable attacks in P1 aren’t as punishable in P2. For anyone that wants to know took me 11 hours to beat her, I used Moon Veil and Meteoric Ore Blade, and a side weapon with Blood Hound Step. -Try not to greed only do a hit or two, anymore and your asking to get hit. She’s more open than you think she is, you just need to be patient, and learn when you can get a hit off. Sometimes it’s better not to heal and to attack when she’s punishable, sometimes it’s not, you just have to learn when. -Put on the Damage Negation talisman you find in the area, it really helps. Her grab attack was doing 90% of my HP and dropped to around 70%, makes a huge difference for when you get hit or are trying to learn her attacks. -A reminder that you don’t always have to dodge roll everything, just taking a step back or to the sides can be helpful. Also, even just regular attacking even if it’s once if able is better than nothing. -I played the patient game so if you wanna do it this way learn her strings and how to SURVIVE Waterfowl dance. -She WILL always do a Waterfowl Dance in P1 at 65-75 % HP always, so bait that one first aka don’t greed and try to maintain distance. Anytime after is up to the AI. You might not see any at all, you could see it four times in P1 alone. Once I avoided death more consistently on that attack I started seeing P2 way more, that move alone probably gave me half my deaths. -If you wanna play patient expect to see Waterfowl dance multiple times. Don’t attack her until her combo ends, as that’s when she’s the most punishable. You can tell she’s done because the last attack she does she will draw her weapon away much slower. Also I believe there might be a sound cue as well but who’s really listening. 7:00 A good example of how that attack was the end of her combo. -Try not to drink your potions unless she’s mid combo and your far enough, or she’s just ending her combo or she backs steps away. You have to learn her patterns to tell when you can or can’t drink most of the time. -Also don’t run out of stamina too much shouldn’t have to explain why. -Don’t punish her grabs unless you can stagger her, if not she most likely will follow up with another attack. -Also get used to attacking her at the same time she’ll attack you, if you like to do a stare off waiting for her to attack. -1:31 Punishable attack, roll towards her not away from her if you want to be able to get a hit or two off. This attack you’ll see a lot in P2 and becomes less punishable. -1:55 Had enough distance to Bloodhound Step once to avoid the first string, and even Bloodhound Step again to avoid the second string. For the Third combo string you need to Bloodhound towards her when she just jumps over you, but she homes in on you so need to dodge roll again. The Camera is your worst enemy on the last string. Always be mindful of the wall if your using Bloodhound Step. -2:15 Punishable attack, it’s not too bad to learn to dodge that one. Wait until she’s very low, then dodge roll twice to her sides. The second roll is for safety. -2:28 You need to roll towards her just a little bit to her left or right, if you do it right she’ll go right past you. Don’t dodge roll away from her or too far to the sides because you will get clipped. She always does the Dash123 in a straight line. She can do the attack up to 4x in a row. Make sure to roll away once you’ve dodged the initial hit 123 swing as she can immediately turn and swing, so if you try and greed you’ll get clipped by it. -4:26 Punishable attack during and after the attack, but it can be tricky to get the timing down of always dodging the first hit if your close. -4:41 If you can’t Bloundhound Step to make some distance, the best you can do is I-frame as much as you can of the first hit. For the second string, roll towards her but don’t dodge ASAP as there is a gap between the first and second string 4:43-4:44 and if you do it too soon you will get clipped. -6:02 That is a punishable combo ender and the one you will probably punish her the most on, however she usually will only do it if your close enough. Also the range on that is quite long I’ve gotten clipped by that attack a lot. -8:26-8:30 Good example of how a majority of her combo’s are. I would usually roll towards her to avoid the first attack, and roll again away from her to make distance to to see what she’s doing. Sometimes she will do attacks that will follow up very closely with each other, so you can’t i-frame them back to back which is why I recommend moving away and making distance after the first attack. -Her Blood Loss build up carries on from P1, usually you should proc it twice, if you build up enough you can actually get Bleed off on her as she is getting up from her Aeolian Bloom (Diving flower attack). Which is nice she starts at around 75% HP. However she can also immediately follow up with Waterfowl after her dive, always be careful of that attack along with her Clone attacks into a dive. Unfortunately I can’t help with dodging it as I never successfully did it without getting hit. However she attacks 6 times with her clones before she dives at you and the third clone does a delayed attack. If you lock on to her, you will most likely not see her 6th clone attack (which I think is another clone just dashing at you) which is also a very fast attack that follows up from the 5th. So if you get hit by the 5th clone, you’ll most likely get hit by the 6th and her dive attack (aka stun locked) which is unfortunately most likely death. Goodluck and try to stay calm, if you start getting angry you’ve already lost.

I can tell you've attained this knowledge through walking thru the crucible of pain. I thought Malenia for 10 hrs straight before I killed her. By that point everything just became muscle memory and honestly the hardest attack for me to avoid in phase 2 was when she sends out multiple clones of herself. That ended many phase 2 attempts. But honestly the biggest thing that will help afro is accepting the pain and staying calm. He's overthinking every little thing and trying to brute force through it. Malenia punishes the shit out of stuff like that.

When Malenia uses her waterfowl dance run away from the first burst, and then dodge into the second burst and you’ll end up behind her and she’ll miss the rest of the attack. Another thing to keep in mind is that she uses the attack when her hp bar is at around 70% the second time is at 50% and the third is around 30%. Once you get the dodge timing down in the dance the rest of the fight is pretty easy

The main issue here is the build is severely unoptimized: There are 38 points in Arcane and 23 points in Faith when Flies only needs 16 and 11 respectively The whip scales with both strength and dexterity so put those remaining points in there for more damage The dragon communion seal scales incantations with Arcane and Faith, but considering the whips are the main weapon the clawmark seal would work much better The clawmark seal scales incantations with strength instead which works better for this build The poleblade does require arcane to use it, but there's no reason that it should still be being used Committing to either the poleblade or the whips is key

For me, the issue seemed to be more that he was over committing to attacks trying to stack status and stagger. She hyper armors a lot, and if you're too close when waterfowl starts you basically get destroyed. You need to keep enough stam to roll and sprint. If you deal a bunch of damage then get hit a bunch because you lacked the stam to avoid it, you wasted health for nothing because she heals the damage back.

Thing is the whips deal bleed damage, and Status effect application scales on arcane, so if you are trying to apply frostbite and bleed like he is, you want arcane builds.

Considering he's got basically no defense due to his armor and build, he can't really trade effectively with her. Malenia in general is not a boss you trade blows with, Phase 1 especially should not involve trading attacks.

For anyone who wants to know, the best way ive found to dodge the waterfowl dance is to dodge backwards as much as possible with bloodhounds step for the first 2 flurries, and then on the third dodge directly into her so she'll go right over your head. Ive done this multiple times and taken no damage from it at all

I noticed you have Radagons Soreseal. I've had a bit of an enlightenment recently regarding the late game difficulty spike. Radagons Soreseal specifically is amazing early game because it gives melee builds all the important stats they need, bonus health, endurance, strength, and dexterity. The downside to using RS is that it lowers your defenses so you take more damage. Early game, that downside simply does not matter because you're not soft or hardcapping on your levels yet. The bonus stats early make equipping RS well worth it since nothing early game does a massive amount of damage anyways. Late game however, RS works against you for two reasons. First, the snow regions in particular introduce a large increase in damage, the late game difficulty really spikes up. Secondly, by the time you reach that late game difficulty spike, you've most likely soft or hardcapped on the extra stats RS gives you, so the bonus stats aren't meaning as much as they used to. So the pros for using RS late game have gone down because that stats aren't as important due to the softcapping, it lowers your defense, and the late game difficulty is night and day compared to previous areas All this to say, my advice would be to remove the RS talisman and replace it with something to give you more survivability. Maybe physical damage reduction from Dragoncrest Greatshield talisman or the Crimson Seed talisman to get more health from your flask I was struggling with Malenia a lot when i tried solo'ing her without a summons or using frost/bleed/greatshield combo until i realized this. After removing RS the fight went a lot smoother and I took her out within 10 minutes. TLDR: Radagons Soreseal late game bad because of soft cap on stats, the lower defense it gives you, and late game difficulty. Replace it with a talisman to increase your survivability Hope this helps someone

I typed this up as well. Many build guides are coming out with maximum DPS parameters, but there’s simply no reason to take about 15% more damage from all attacks when the stats aren’t even doing as much for you any longer.

Since I've made the realization, the late game areas still pose a threat, but I feel like it's much more manageable. I flipped the script overnight, and each new journey into those areas on a new character have mimiced the same results as the first time

I 100% agree with this. In late game, both Radagon and Marika's soreseals are not worth it. The increased difficulty spike diminishes the benefits you get from soreseals. The weapon damage doesn't mean anything if you don't survive. The only way to mitigate this is by using dragoncrest greatshield+2 talisman or using golden vow spell. But you could get so much more defense without the soreseals and increase your survivability.

I came here with the Radagons Soreseal and after get my ass beaten by her i tried to remove it and i didn't see the difference. I take less damage but the combo still killed me, and the second phase still hurt. I used the Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman for mitigating the damage and that helped a bit. He just needs to endure and learn the boss fight, even if he takes less damage if he still fucks up the rolls he's not gonna win.

Not sure if it'll help, but the third part of her blade storm has functionally infinite range, and will circle around in front of where she thinks you're going, so if you run in the same direction the whole time even if you avoid the first two the third will always catch up to you. You can bait her into a direction for it, but it can be tricky, so it may be easier to just 180 swap directions with your bloodhound step after the second part ends

The funniest thing is he did dodge the third dance in the video, by literally standing still. You only need to learn how to dodge two moves to beat Malenia, the Waterfowl Dance and her Kage Bunshin in the second phase (and Afro haven't even encounter that yet lmao). In Soul games. a lot of times you can beat the bosses by having a moment of luck, but Malenia is the boss designed to never give you that moment. All of her other combos is either easy to read or easy to dodge, as long as you understand her ultimate moves, it will be a lot simpler.

@@Ninjacob00 yes because she lifesteal from hitting you, so you have to be as patient as possible. Trading damage is a big no no. She always Waterfowl dance when her health drops to about 75%. I always hit her a little bit to reach that point and keep backing to keep distance. Once she does the move she rarely do it again in the first phase. For the second phase just make sure you dodge the scarlet rot nukes. Then take dmg resistance flask to avoid her special move one shotting you and try to keep the gameplan the same as the first one.

Big tip, use the dragoncrest great shield talisman. Its nearby in the haligtree and vastly boosts physical damage negation. You'll still take hella damage but it really helps and stops you from being one shot from 60-70% health.

Here is a shield tip: The amount of stamina it takes to block depends on shields guard boost, a stat which you dan check. Upgrading a shield almost to max raises guard boost by like 5. Also it is way faster and easier to switch to a shield like you switch to spell casting talisman or a weapon rather than 2 handing it. That is the start I used to survive the combo attack. Edit: For people saying that you can dodge her during the combo and that he heals even on shield. While both is true shield is still by far the safest option and its not like you have to eat the entire combo attack. She does roughly 3 combo bursts with pauses and you can just start walking back during the thrid one and not get hit at all. Also just damage her more than she heals 5 head. Respec and try other spells/weapons. She is weak to fire, bleed and frost. Last 2 are probably some of the most common status effects in the game.

It took me five hours to beat Malenia the first time. I did four straight hours of banging my head against the wall, slowly but surely figuring out her moves and devising my own methods of evading and countering. And, while I never raged once, I was upset with myself. The first run… I beat Malenia’s first phase, 1st try. I could 50/50 the match most times, but that first run I played perfectly. And that’s what upset me. I knew in my heart and soul that I could beat Malenia, I knew I was skilled enough to defeat her, yet I kept making such silly mistakes like not paying enough attention or getting too greedy and got punished for it hard each time. Even if it didn’t mean death, it did mean being put on the back foot and reset from a worse position than when I started. And then I took an hour for a break, before the itch in my brain demanded I go back. It took me another hour, and unleashing my “secret weapon” (which is a can of Monster energy. For some reason, every single time I struggled on a boss, I’d crack open a can and just win. It might sound silly, but genuinely, I’d open a Monster and just win) but I managed to get a run so perfect I started phase 2 with 7 out of 7 Crimson flasks and 5 Cerulean flasks. That was the run I won. I still had 3 Crimson Flasks and 2 Cerulean. I popped off so god damn hard and drained that can of Monster in celebration. My advise to any player struggling against a boss. Take a break. You don’t have to grind yourself down on a video game and nobody will think less of you for doing so. Take a break, grab a bite to eat and something to drink, let yourself settle down, and go back in when you are ready. You will play so much better that it won’t take long to win. Because during that break, your mind will be able to take in all those patterns you saw and break them down. That is a lot more difficult to do when you keep throwing yourself into the grinder. When you’ve processed all that information, trust me you will have so much easier of a time. That last hour? I was 100% for wins against phase 1. I only struggled with the newer attacks of phase 2 and even then I could figure them out a lot faster without having to worry about her other attacks as well.

Tree Sentinel showed me I'm not, radahn destroyed my pride( and this is post nerf I can't imagine what pre nerf radahn would've done to me) and Melania broke me. Afro when you fight her try dodging to her left more often (your right) that way you dodge her sword attacks and for that b.s multi hit attack your best bet is to Dodge using blood hound step. the moment she gets close to you(not before or after ) dodge using bloodhounds step..when you do that she remains in the same place and does those strikes till she moves again..you need to dodge back and away the moment you think it would hit you( has to be the exact moment) thats how i beat her...hope this helped!

When Malenia does her special move observe her, and look for the best timing for you. She will jump in the air three times, The first two use bloodhound step to back away from her then on her third jump right before she dives in for you use bloodhound step towards her and you will make it. It all comes down to timing.

Don't even need bloodhound step. The key to her Waterfowl Dance is to dodge into and past her. Basically if she's in front of you roll forward through her and out the other side (spam that shit lmao). The 3rd set of slices after you dodge THROUGH it she will also kind of slide to a side you want to dodge in the other direction or you'll get hit by the end. It doesn't make sense written down but once I learned the rolling timing that move is a joke despite sometimes still hitting me. The only parts of that move I really get hit by anymore is the first set (because sometimes I fuck it up) and the end of the 3rd set because I rolled the wrong direction.

Hey Afro, a couple of tips that helped me beat Malenia: - Her waterfowl move consists of three different attacks. Once Malenia is at 70% health she'll start using this attack so be sure to keep your distance at this point. Running at her can trigger the attack meaning you can bait it out (you can also start her combo from a distance using throwing knives). There are a couple of ways to deal with the attack itself. If you are positioned correctly (far enough away) you can outrun the first two and dodge away from the third hit by rolling twice. This however didn't work for me personally because I could never get the required space between me and the boss. My tactic was running away from the first move, dodging into the second move on the left side (her right side) and immediately dodging back twice. Most of the times I would only get hit once. Bloudhound step is a good option but I could never get the hang of it. - Roll into the attack where her sword sparks. Most consistent way I found to dodge it. You also have to dodge right after the first roll otherwise you'll be hit. - Equip the Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman to greatly boost your physical damage nagation and equip some better armour. The difference in damage you'll take is insane. I really hope these tips can help you beat Malenia, good luck!

Afro, you should try removing the Radgon’s Scarseal or Soreseal whichever you have on. I know people talk about it like it’s a god tier item, but it completely falls off once you reach the soft caps and you end up taking a large increase in damage for extremely minimal gains. I don’t think you need it at all in this build, and it will give you a lot more wiggle room.

A few tips that helped me beat Malenia: First bloodhound's step is absolutely critical, when she charges up her spiral cloud passage dance you have to spam the weapon art backwards for the first two bursts. Then on the third and final burst you have to dodge forward with the weapon art becuase she will always dash in ahead of you in order to catch you. Secondly you have to roll into her sometimes, when shifts she her sword into her prosthetic hand for a rapid series of slashes you'll want to roll towards her left hand. If you time it right you'll get out of the combo unscathed. Minor detail I know, but since Malenia can heal at your expense every bit of health counts. Thirdly you might just want to turn off the music, especially in the second phase. If you're stressed then this soundtrack will only likely make you panic when you should be concentrating for the most difficult phase. Fourthly if these tips don't really help then I suggest grinding for more levels. Miquella's Haligtree is actually the area where enemies drop the most amount of runes per kill. One place that worked well for me was between the church where the clean rot knight is standing guard and the gateway where the putrid avatar is standing guard. I was around level 130 and each run between these checkpoints gave me at least a single level up per run. Anyways, I wish you the best in your endeavors.

I don't feel bad because I was using this weapon before the big update that fixed everything but Rob helped me beat her second try even when the arcane scaling was messed up it still shredded melenia with bleed but after seeing what the weapon got turned into I can confidently say I got my ass handed to me at least a 100 times before I finally beat radagon and elden beast. Just something about that fight but even on ng plus Melania is no where near as hard as what people say. her moves are stupidly easy to read after the first few tries and bloodhound step is the best counter for any long combo move she does. a great fight but nothing on the level of some of sekiro bosses or even ds3 I'd say

Hey afro, your shield strat wasn't bad but there's an easier way to do It. Instead of trying to 2 hand, just equip barricade shield Ash of War on your shield. Pop It during the First part of her Waterfowl Dance attack and then block It. You can Dodge the rest easier that way.

I honestly feel silly for not using my shield more as an Astrologer until Malenia. She showed me that there was a real weakness to my boss technique, that I was relying far too much on summons and nukes and not prioritizing DR and shield defence. So, I got 20 levels, equipped Radahn's armour, maxed my Carian shield and slapped Barricade Shield on it and WOW, WOW what a total difference. She damaged me ONCE, only once the entire fight, and only for like 400 health. I was amazed. The other change I made was learning to love Stars of Ruin--I had no idea it had such incredible stagger, here all this time I was relying on Rock Sling for my stagger bombs but Stars of Ruin just wrecks it. Between actually using my shield, Stars of Ruin spam, and Tiche to keep her distracted, I killed Malenia before my physick even ran out. I was genuinely surprised. Stagger her with Stars, then while she's down Tiche will usually damage her enough to pull aggro, allowing more Stars spam. The one time she did aggro me was actually kinda pathetic with my shield up--sure she healed, but nothing more Stars spam couldn't fix.

Pro tip: Throw a knife at her whenever you think she’ll do the jumping sword slash ability. If your within range it’ll trigger it. It’ll work as well with the blood fly spell you have. You can also throw knives at her when she’s in her cocoon you can throw them really fast compared to the blood fly attack you have.

For baiting out the waterfowl dance, the easiest way is when you are just staring her down, throw a knife or hit her with a projectile at a safe distance and she'll respond with the move. Do that and your safe to dodge no problem especially with the bloodhound step.

Use a high stability shield for that one attack. That's what I did. A shield's stability determines how much of your stamina bar each hit you receive takes, and if it's high enough you can block every attack reasonably well.

For those saying that she heals if you block, yes. She do... She also heals if you die. Pick your poison. For those with a keen eye, you might notice she doesn't heal the same amount on every hit. I was curious about this and it seems her rapid attacks heal her for significantly less per strike whilst her big hits can heal her for as much as 6.5% of her max HP all at once. Yes, she heals... But you can beat it out even if you block her. She staggers, after all. Comboing her isn't hard.

@@RandomDude-is1ng Not really, Malenia got absolutely destroyed by my summon on her second phase because it didn't care about scarlet rot. You can also hit her way more often because she doesn't always target you. So overall especially with bleed and/or frost damage the fight with a mimic +10 is way easier.
