I paid an expert to clean this lens years ago. He did great work. Now having watched the process of cleaning, I am convinced what I paid for is a bargain.

Hello Mikeno, beautiful video by the way, wanted to ask, I bought a carl Zeiss Distagon 2.8 35mm and has a tiny bit of fungus, would the lens I bought be similar in taking it apart like this one in the video? Thank you so much for your time.

Do you have any tips for getting sand from the beach out of a lens? It jammed the focus and now my focus ring won’t go all the way in to the ♾️.
@mikeno624 ай бұрын
Hmmm 🤔 it’s not good, because if only one sand corn gets into the helicoid thread it will be almost impossible to guess what way one should turn the focusing ring so it will come loose. But on the other hand you could try to disassemble the lens as much as possible from the front or/and the back, and NOT turning the focus helicoid, then you can try to use some cotton buds and wipe out as much sand corn as possible. BEFORE disassemble the focus assembly you try to measure the focus assembly. Start with the inner helicoid and set marks when you ( hopefully ) can get the helicoids apart. Then you can try continuing with the next helicoid and so on.

Any tips getting lens elements back into their retaining rings without them falling out? Are they traditionally cemented in?
@carlono13 жыл бұрын
Hi mike! Your video is super useful, thanks for your effort to help the people using old camera equipment. I recently bought a planar 1,4 50mm for just a few euros, it‘s full of fungus and dust and needs some cleaning. I‘m using the same vaccum pads like you, but i can‘t remove the first ring (the one with the „carl zeiss planar“ writing on it. Do you have an idea how I could remove it when it‘s stuck? I think the camera got wet some time and everything is really stuck together. Thanks for replying, keep up the great work 👍
@mikeno623 жыл бұрын
Thanks Carlo, about the stuck nameplate/front plate, in many of those old Carl Zeiss from that time they use a lot of thread lock and it was the red type (the hard type!). You can try to soften the thread lock with some nail polish remover with Acetone or Isopropylalcohol 99% or so on a cotton bud. Take really good care when use the Acetone on plastic because it can soften or destroy the plastic parts, just like many lenses with plastic front plate, and never use Acetone on aperture blade that are made of plastic...!.
@carlono13 жыл бұрын
@@mikeno62 thanks for the reply! I will try that. How are youre experiences with cleaned lens? I‘ve contacted Zeiss and they told me, fungus would be spreading easily and can even „infect“ your camera body or other lenses. Have you ever experienced something like this?

I admired your "lens spanner" Where did you get it.? I have a much more cumbersome tool..this "compass" like tool looks robust, A side bit I have this lens and my baby boy pulled the camera off the table and it fell and badly bent the attached filter. Icouldn'T get it off for years.. finally one day with those work gloves I gave a try and wow great .. I was turning the front retaining ring and well . I was late able to get those two pieces apart and.the filter ring was not too dented. I worked it out with a ring tool ..slowly and now it's good to go...no visual fungus..lucky me

Hi there, Could you give me any advice on removing the front name plate? My lens has fungus and I've tried everything to remove the plate using the same tools you have but it is solid and won't budge. Thanks in advance.

Some lenses open right up but some others don't. I have also been trying for weeks and tired my wrists so much from extreme attempts to open a couple of stubborn Contaxes. If you search for "bottle jar opener" or "Anti-slip Can Lid Opener" you will find some nice adjustable rubber belt openers that are used to open tightly sealed jars. I could open those stubborn lenses using that tool in 10 seconds.
@matthewforrest9995 жыл бұрын
@@areiacreations thanks for the info, it turned out that there was excessive amounts of red threadlock holding it together, and used two rubber strap wrenches to pull it apart, what a job it was.

@@areiacreations I've recently used a small amount of electronics cleaning spray to temporarily loosen some stuck focus rings, I wonder if it would help loosen the grime under the name plate.

Hello. Do you have any experience with dust between lens elements in point and shoot (pocket digital) cameras? Is it possible to take apart the objective, or it is all glued together plastic? (It is a Fujifilm F40fd in my case) Thanks.
@mikeno626 жыл бұрын
It is possible to do, I have clean the lens elements in some pocket digital cameras and it turn out to be very good. One have to be careful when disassemble the camera because of the very thin flex cables inside those cameras and also on the side of the lens block, and even more careful when one open the lens assembly. TAKE good care of the flash capacitor, it can give some nasty sparks if you touch the 2 wires. Also because the plastic is very thin. But of course it is possible to clean with Isopropylalcohol 99%, NEVER use Acetone because it will damage the plastic parts. Try find a service manual, and take pictures during the process. There are many guide arrows inside the lens, where parts have to be disassembled or assembled so its correct. Good luck :-) Cheers Kenneth

Can you please tell me if cleaning with these materials-- hydrogen peroxide and lighter fluid on the inside elements will damage their t* coating? I've read that they are very easy to accidentally destroy
@areiacreations5 жыл бұрын
None of those materials will damage the T* coating, including acetone, alcohol, lighter fluid and hydrogen peroxide. I had elements submerged for days in those difference substances, in an experiment to remove hazing (which sits under the coating) from those lenses. None works and the coating in all cases is 100% intact.
