video relay helped me om my 1997 40 hp . drive shaft barring went out . replacing it i found a error from last repairman or factory . barring race was suppose to be race barring race and a shim . the 2 races were in forgather then barring then shim . . looks like it had ben like that a long time . hope to be ok now . waiting in some seals to finish it .

The big washers and flat bearing on top of the drive shaft shows on the parts diagram The washers are part 35 and the bearing is part 34. The diagrams says it takes 2 washers and also says it takes 2 bearings? Doesnt show that in the diagram but says takes two? All my upper bearings were destroyed and couldnt tell what went where. I noticed that you only showed one bearing also when you showed how it all goes together. Is that a typo from boats.net? Those 2 skinny washers are shims and when reinstalling the driveshaft has to be measured with a shim gauge or calipers to know how thick the shims should be. Thanks for all these videos once again!

I generally go to marineengine to see the diagrams. Looking at just a standard 1992 40HP gearcase, it shows part 34, thrust bearing. 2 count. I believe they must be side by side. Its hard to tell. Its been a while since I took this thing apart so I could not tell you 100%.

So to get the long shaft out of my 50s and 60s motors, I need to get all the way into that gear case and take that nut off? Then the shaft comes out from the bottom of the case? I’m converting a 1966 33hp skitwin long shaft to a short shaft using parts from a 1959 35hp superseahorse.

Yes I forgot if I mentioned in the video but if you don't have any proper tools the easiest way to get it off is using the force of the motor turning left or right while clamping down on the flywheel at the top or having simply someone hold a wrench on the nut and then rotate the flywheel at the top using it as wrench. This is because the top of the drive shaft has an odd shape with teeth you really do not want to damage.

Thanks for the video, it's helping me a lot. Does the drive shaft have to come out in order to remove the prop shaft? In my 1998 Johnson 50, I've got the carrier bearing out along with the reverse gear but the prop shaft shaft still seems like something is holding it from coming out.

No it does not really need to be removed for the prop shaft to come out. However the forward gear will be stuck inside the lower unit. Only the reverse gear will come out with the prop shaft.

@@cenkaetaya Thanks for the reply. The shift rod linkage was holding it in, I finally got it out. The forward gear and pinion are completely rounded off but all else looks good. Could I get by with just replacing these two gears and be dependable?

@@jeffperkins6514 You should, as long as nothing else is wrong. It can be hard to tell. In most of these cases if you are specifically buying parts, it is often cheaper to keep an eye out for a used motor on craigslist and buy that for parts instead of purchasing actual parts. They can be very expensive, but old used motors can be found super cheap.

Is there any way you can give me the number off the bearing inside the drive shaft retainer housing? I can't seem to find any diagram for that bearing.

If you go to the Marine engine website you should be able to find the right part based on the diagrams they have. Most years are the same. Check between a few different year models if you are unsure.

i have a 70 hp evinrude that i just got and the shaft is stuck to the power head. I guess the previous owners didnt do enough lower leg maintenance? Can I remove the leg by removing the pinion nut?

If it's stuck in the power head it should he fairly easy to get it out by just banging it down. Make sure you disconnected the shift rod. If it's truly rusted that badly inside the power head, it's probably not a good sign. Removing the housing like in the video was very difficult so I do not recommend it.

@@cenkaetaya thanks. Yup, all bolts were out. I think i will trey the method of hanging the motor upside down, spray penetrating oil in and try the wedging again to separate the leg from the lower leg from its housing.

@@darrylb4048 I just find it hard to believe the only thing holding it is the drive shaft. Are you sure you aren't forgetting 1 bolt?

@@cenkaetaya Sure am. After I tried for a week I took it to the dealer, they tried and they said....its done, runs well, but its done. Yup, all bolts were out. Im thinking of turning it upside down and running penetrating oil down the shaft. I can get the straw in the space that comes open when the bolts are out.
