Put your cable thru some 1/2" pvc pipe, to control the binding. Tape your shop vac hose to a length of garden hose, to clean the remains out of the frame.

I was thinking the pipe or tube too and maybe just crimp the cable and fray out the ends to get deep in the corners. I like this better than a round wire brush because it gets those inside corners. It's like a weed whacker for rusty pipes and tubes.

Im about to start rustproofing my landcruisers inner frame rails to increase the trucks longevity and stumbled on your video. Pure genius. My cruiser is a california truck and never registered out of state, im gonna run magnets thru the frame first to see if i have any problem areas first. If i find any ill definitely use that chain-chimney sweep method to knock it all out. Once ive coated my frame inside and out, im gonna spray come heavy cosmoline around the pinchwelds and seams where the paint possibly wont reach. To finish it off ill fog corrosion x on the inner door panels, a pillars, engine compt, etc... It sounds like alot, but if i d.i.y, i should have a much more rustproof treatment than what the 'professionals' would provide you with... And it should cost less than 2 years worth of their services.

You have made such a helpful video. It's a fantastic idea. May I respectfully recommend that the chain links be driven by a length of that threaded bar.
@thomasg43243 жыл бұрын
*I created several lengths of PVC tubing, which I crushed the ends of, and then screwed in chains.* I later realized I could drill holes into the PVC, and then I shot compressed air through the PVC whilst I was flailing the rust. This blew out the rust as it was being knocked loose, and let me know when the area was done, so I could move on. I used the same technique to center, and slowly spin the spray nozzles. And I used a warm can on a cold night. This helped the spray cling evenly within the frame, rather than drip. #GreatVideo

Great idea, I've pulled it through a length of garden hose, this allows you to hold it and it doesn't go all over the place as you pull it out!
@timothyandrewnielsen5 жыл бұрын
That's a pretty good idea. Once you got the rust knocked off, You should get a high powered air blower and just shoot it in there to blow it all too one end, then pull the rust flakes off. After that, i'd spray some oil in all the holes to help prevent more rust form forming. You'll never get it all but you will drastically increase the lifespan of that frame.

Could you put the cable inside something like a black water pipe to stop it swinging so much when you get out near the back of the frame? Would give more control for little €€€ if it worked

Nice stuff! Thanks for sharing. Nylon pneumatic hose and some lubrication will do the whole trick. Nylon tube is flexible, low friction and wear resistant. Many diameters to choose from and cheap to buy.

I found a 5 foot 3/8 fiberglass rod, I used lathe to drill a 1/4" hole in one end and shoved a big wire wheel into it for a interference fit then drilled a hole through the middle of rod with a roll pin securing it. Attach to drill and shove it through a few times. Wire wheel is flexible enough to squeeze through while spinning and it gets everything. Worked quite well. How I clean out my holes for my Meyers plow frame where the head gear slides in.

that's a good idea thanks for the vid, something to make that better not to bind up might be to put some of the line threw any kind of hollow tube or piping to keep some of it straight
@williamcharles94806 жыл бұрын
Think about maybe using a length of 1/4 inch cable. It shouldn't flop around quite as much and give you a little more control. To stiffen the cable a bit more, use some 5/16 inch vinyl fuel line hose slid over the cable from the drill end. It'll stiffen the cable enough for it to be slid into the frame, but not so much as to dampen the action of the chain thrashing around. To stiffen it more use some 3/8 inch CPVC Pipe, leave about a foot of the chain end exposed. As for the chain, use a closed link type. It won't get hung up in the frame. This is just a thought. I appreciate the video, I've got some rust to rattle out of a frame myself.

Like other people have said, put the cable inside of something. I suggest a hose slightly bigger than the cable. That way you can bend it around parts frame unlike a pipe. I ordered a 50' hose to connect with my pressure washer that has 3 nozzles to help clean out the inside, haven't tried it yet though. I might try that if I see some heavy build up with a camera system I got. I'd might use short pieces of cable instead of chains though.

Cory Metzker well, it definitely helped. but it takes forever to get all the powder and chips out. so i finally bought an air compressor and blew it all out. but... youre going to need to make a few of them and i had to use smaller pieces of chain for the end. and the biggest improvement i made is a piece of fuel line. cut a piece of fuel line the length of the cable and run the cable through it and u can really go to town on it without it getting caught and bound up. good luck buddy :)

I like your solution. I might take a look at the sweep idea though. I've used Extend rust neutralizer and it works really well. A couple of coats. Let first coat dry then again. Also, you don't need to remove all the rust to use it. It actually needs some rust to work. Good job.
