That's awesomely simple. We used to use a piece of cloth to filter our water(coming out of the spigot) in the Islands, and it works the same. Tyvm for the vid.

Sometimes I use cloth too. If the rust is really bad, I tie an old white t-shirt to the pool ladder and put the ladder directly in front of the jet, so the t-shirt catches rust too.

Thank you for this video.! I filled my pool with my well water and noticed how green the water was. I know that I have a lot of iron in my water. At first I was using a camper filter, but it slowed the water pressure down to much. I’ve been putting socks on the 2 intakes every day and running the pump for 10 hours. It has taken a week of changing out rusty socks, and rinsing the filter to make the pool look clear. I’m also planning on keeping the pool up through a Michigan winter. It took 3 days to fill a 20x48 pool. I don’t want to go through that again next year.

I'm glad the sock trick worked for you too! I've been leaving mine up the last two winters. I just drain enough water to take the filter off the side, and I store that in my basement because I don't want it to crack. Then it only takes a couple of hours to add enough water again when it gets warm enough to open the pool.

I do that too, but I have to be careful. I accidentally let the fiberfill get sucked into the filter motor one time. It locked up the motor, and I had to spend a couple of hours taking the pump apart and pulling all the fibers of the little wheel in the motor. I broke a thin metal pin in the process, so I then had to take apart an old (totally different) filter pump from a previous pool to steal parts. Fortunately, the same sized pin was there, and it all worked when I put it back together. It was definitely an adventure.

If you go online and buy yourself a bag of Asorbic Acid sprinkle that in your pool, that will immediately clean the rust up. Also if you have any rust stains on plaster or pebble tec pools, it will prob work on liners--get an old sock, add a small rock and some acid or you can even use vitamin c pills, then put the sock on the rust spot. In a few minutes it will remove the stain. The main ingredient in vitamin c is asorbic acid. Don’t use dollar store ones tho-they don’t have much acid in their pills.

I had that too the last time I had to empty my pool and refill it. My pool came with a vacuum that hooks to the filter, so I cleaned it with that while keeping the sock on the outtake to catch the bits of iron. If you don't have a pool vac, you will need to stir it up often to get it into your filter. I would get a broom from Dollar Tree and run it along the bottom several times a day if you can.

do you shock the pool with the sock on ?
@TheHouseThatNeverSlumbers
@TheHouseThatNeverSlumbers 3 жыл бұрын
I've actually not shocked my pool for the last two summers. There's a chemical in the shock that apparently reacts with the minerals in hard water and helps contribute to that brownish color. I now just use 3-inch chlorine tablets and +/- to get the pH in balance. My water has stayed clear all summer both years. I haven't even needed algaecide this year. It's been very surprising to me. I think when I was using shock, I was constantly having to dump in more chemicals to try to correct issues caused by the shock. When I did use shock, I left the sock on though.

How long do you run the pump
@TheHouseThatNeverSlumbers
@TheHouseThatNeverSlumbers 4 жыл бұрын
I run my pool pump 24/7 for the first couple of days until the water is mostly clear. I know that's against the manufacturer's warnings, and you could blow your pool pump running it non-stop, but we are always anxious to get the water clear. I've never had an issue doing it. Once my pool water looks blue, I run the pump all day but turn it off before I go to bed for a couple of weeks. By about the third week when I have the water totally under control with the pH in check, I only run the pump when someone is in the pool. Pumps use a lot of electricity, so I try to keep it to a minimum. Plus it can't really filter out the bugs and stuff unless someone is in the pool stirring up the water anyway. My water has stayed super clean this summer with barely any chemicals. I did add a tennis ball to soak up oils this summer, and I've left the white sock on the outlet from the pump all summer instead of removing it once the rusty color was gone. This seems to have significantly reduced the amount of chemicals for us.

Thank you!!! First time pool owner and thought I did something wrong. How long did it take to see color change results? I assume I can still swim in it with my kids as long as my ph and chlorine levels are ok right? Just knowing the green tint is rust or copper scares me being a father and a first time pool owner
@TheHouseThatNeverSlumbers
@TheHouseThatNeverSlumbers 5 жыл бұрын
It took me years to figure this out. When rust is the reason for the discoloration, the more chlorine you add, the darker green/orange the water will become. I used to just keep shocking and shocking (thinking it was algae), and that would just make it look worse. I've only shocked one time this year (when I first filled the pool), so it's saving me tons of money. We have always continued to swim if the chlorine range is okay, even if pH is off a little. When it's really rusty, it will ruin light colored bathing suits though and make them all dingy, so beware of that. Each of my kids has one nasty swimsuit that we kept just to wear when the water is bad (because they always want to swim right away). It took me about three days to get the water clear this year. It took me over a week last year, so I'm getting better with practice. The trick is to clean the filter and switch the sock really often. If you have at least two filters and at least two socks, it's not that difficult. I was swapping my filter about 5 times a day during the first three days. I just kept one filter cartridge and one sock soaking in the Iron Out, and I would go out and rinse those, and swap, and start soaking the other one every couple of hours. Any time you add water from the hose (because of too much splashing or evaporation), you will possibly need to filter with the sock again. I don't think the rust/copper is actually harmful at all. It just looks nasty. I actually read an article about more people being iron-deficient today because all the water is filtered or runs through softeners now. People used to drink and bathe in the unfiltered well water, and the natural iron kept them from being so anemic. My grandma who lived to a ripe old age always went to the outside hydrant to fill jugs of water that she carried inside for drinking because her inside water was softened. I suppose if my grandma can drink the rusty, mineral-rich well water her whole life, it definitely won't hurt us to swim in it for a bit. If the sock and filter cartridge start looking more green than orange, try treating with an algaecide. When it's rust making the water look green/brown/orange, the sock and filter cartridge will look like mine in the video.

@TheHouseThatNeverSlumbers
@TheHouseThatNeverSlumbers 5 жыл бұрын
@@millermatic140 , is your filter cartridge turning reddish/orangish like rust? If it's rust in mine, the filter cartridge and the sock turn orangish brown. If it's algae or something like that, the filter cartridge turns greenish. My kids actually swim regardless. I grew up swimming in my grandpa's farm pond which was much, much worse than any pool I've ever seen, so I don't worry much about it. My kids are old enough to know not to intentionally drink the water though. If your chlorine, pH, and so on are testing in the right range, and the water still looks nasty, I assume rust. The higher the chlorine level the darker the water will get if it's rust. The chlorine makes the rust particles show up better. Also, is it leaving a rust-colored ring around the edge of the pool where the water level is? When the water is rusty, it will leave that rust ring. You can scrub that ring off with a little bit of crushed Vitamin C tablet (ascorbic acid counters rust).
@millermatic140

The filter is a brown color. I do get black sediment at the bottom of the pool that turns into very fine dust if you swoosh around it. I have been using a big empty soda bottle and stuffing it with cotton from an old pillow and having the water come out through it and back into the pool. It has been catching a lot of this nasty brown stuff. I just was concerned thanks again

I have a question.... after doing this, if I shock the pool will it turn it green again? Plus having a chlorine tablet floating. If we don't have chlorine algae will go, I thought. I'm doing exactly what your doing but I'm afraid to shook it and turn it a color again.
@TheHouseThatNeverSlumbers
@TheHouseThatNeverSlumbers 4 жыл бұрын
I did not use shock last year at all. If it gets really warm, and I start to see a greenish tint that I think is algae, I just use algaecide instead. This has been much more successful for me than shock. When I was using shock, I could never get my water clear. I was constantly dumping chemicals in and then dumping more chemicals in to try to fix the other chemicals. I still use the floating chlorine tablets. I just stopped using shock. I also use pH+ or pH- depending on where my water tests. Once I get the pH in the correct range, it's usually easy to keep the water clear. I hope that helps.

@@melissaphillips8382 , I haven't. My mother-in-law always used clarifier in her pool, and her water was sparkling clear. My water was very clear last year without clarifier, so I just never bought any. It was the shock that always seemed to make my water cloudy, so I think that's why my water was clear without it last year. It may have also just been a good year weather wise. I'm not really sure :) It will be interesting to see how it stays this year. One change I made last year that I think helped a lot was using test strips instead of the drops.
