Will Chidlow i had the same issue & did almost the same thing as you did😅 but instead of salvaging a bad clip, shouldn’t we concentrate on getting good quality recording & not polish the turd?😑 How abt a video on getting rid of the hiss in the first place? I was using a wireless lav system anw & it produces an audible level of high frequency hiss which i always have to get rid of in post😞 Gd job anw👍

Absolutely Allan! Just like I said at the start of the video, it is always best to get it right when recording but mistakes do happen, and actually the footage I was working with wasn’t what I would consider bad, just in need of a little work. It took me 10 minutes to correct the audio but it would have taken me an hour to reshoot the content. When doing client work or a one off event it might not be possible to reshoot so I thinks it’s good to have tricks like this in our back pockets. Thanks so much for watching and commenting 👍👍

Hi Will - I would like to encourage you to keep making videos my friend. Even after 3 years, this information is valuable. I was able to greatly improve the audio on a video I thought was a bust. And the compressor filter is now something that I'm probably going to use on all my videos. I like your on-camera presence. And you're soooo right - recording audio when videoing is the much better option. My next investment is an audio recorder to get better audio right out of the gate. All the very best, Cheers Rick

I was given a bad tip when I started to do any audio recording: "don't worry, you can fix it in post" THANK YOU for saying in the beginning that it's easier AND sounds better if you're not lazy and set up the equipment correctly during the live recording. I learned and grew from this. I'm gonna apply it to my mixes! Have a good oneeeeeeee.

DJ October I shoot for news. There is no post to fix anything except audio levels. The editors will not colour correct or tweak EQ audio. I have to get it right in the field first time every time. They’ve usually only got a couple of hours to gather video from all sources and edit it down for broadcast. If audio is bad I get phone calls and emails. So when someone says “fix it in post” we all laugh because basically there is no post.

If I could reach through my monitor and give you a big hug I would because after a year of dealing with this you FINALLY helped me get rid of the crackling sound in my video (or at least improve it a lot). I discovered when ever I have my Macbook Pro plugged into a power cord while I'm filming, I get a horrible hiss and crackle so I try to remember to unplug it but every once and awhile I totally forget. And yes, I've tried different power cords as well as outlets so I don't understand why this happens. Of course I figured that part out after purchasing my 3rd microphone and 2nd aux cable! Again, thank you!

I like the video and appreciate the work put into it! I know I am a little late to the party but for me, it's usually much simpler. If you are wanting to remove background noise from your videos, I would not go with Final Cut presets or auto audio analysis so I agree with that. In my experience with professional equipment it will usually distort the audio and add unwanted reverb and resonance. What Will did with using the EQ and taking the higher frequencies down will effect your voice along with the background noise at the same time, and take out the good sounding high frequencies that make your voice sound as good as it should! So I would look for a more effective option. If you have time - go into the clip that has fuzz/people talking in the background/anything subtle but noticeable in the background to your main audio and add an expander first (It is a stock plugin in both FXP and Logic). Select the high expansion preset on the expander (adjust the threshold as needed). Doing that will EXPAND the softer background noise or fuzz from your louder, more prominent voice or audio, and should leave you with a clean cut of the louder and more audible audio that you would like to hear. After that I will add a compressor. As Will said, the compressor will boost the lower level audio (You just expanded the unwanted lower level audio out) and COMPRESS the higher levels down to make the audio track overall more even. I use the preset "Vocal Compressor 3" and go into the advanced editor on the compressor. I'll switch over to the VCA compressor versus the default compressor because the VCA will boost the mid and higher frequencies which is where our voices are at. I'll put my limiter on within the VCA compressor on the right side of the compressor pop up, and I will set it at -2db or so. That ensures that no audio frequency in this selection will go above -2db, which fixes our clipping problem (adjust threshold, ratio, and makeup as you need). My last step would be add a Channel EQ, do a high pass up to around 100hz (adjust for whoever is talking, don't cut out the bass of their voice but cut out the lower unwanted frequencies in the recording). I have yet to have issues with this technique, let me know if this helps you all.

@WillChidlow2 жыл бұрын
Hey Thomas, for wireless mics it’s often the channel chosen that causes or solves interference. If your mic has selectable channels it’s worth trying different ones to see if it solves your issues. Other than that try getting the mic as close to subject as possible, keeping audio record level nice and low to avoid preamp noise, make sure you are recording in the quietest place possible, turn off any external noise sources (fridge, aircon etc). Hope that helps 👍🙏😎

CMND + C on the clip you just added all your EQs, compressor, limiter, etc on. then on your new blank clip hit CMND + OPTION + V to paste all of those settings onto your new clip. it saves a bunch of time instead of adding those settings to each new clip

@WillChidlow5 жыл бұрын

Nice video, with some good suggestions. A couple of things, the compressor has a limiter built-in... Second don't use autofocus, particularly for a shot where you or the camera isn't moving...
@TrainLordJC Жыл бұрын
I film ships and trains outdoors with almost no voice. And even though I have a RODE deadcat on my supposedly top of the range RODE microphone the footage constantly picks up the annoying wind noise which of course I absolutely do not want. I have seen many videos showing steam locomotives travelling along and I see wind blowing through the trees etc and I am wondering how they are able to capture the awesome sounds of the locomotive and yet have no wind noise. I have looked at the noise reduction and equalizer etc in Final Cut Pro but I haven't worked out how to get rid of the wind noise using these effects. Is wind a low decibel sound? A video explaining how to do this would be greatly appreciated by many I would imagine. Thanks in advance. Cheers from the Train Lord in South Australia
@WillChidlow Жыл бұрын
Wind is such a tricky thing for audio! removing wind noise is very difficult once its captured so the best approach is to avoid capturing it in the first place. Id suspect that other videos you have seen may have been sound designed, most videos in fact have sound added after the fact but it allows for more flexibility and better storytelling whilst mitigating the challenges of capturing actual audio. If sound is captured realtime then its likely the mics will be well placed to avoid the wind, possibly rear facing and tucked away from the worst of the wind gusting by. hope that helps

@AnthemTD4 жыл бұрын
I'm hoping someone can answer this question. I use the Channel EQ effect to sweep the audio for bad frequencies and then pull those frequencies out with the 31 band EQ under audio enhancements. The Channel EQ only has 4 bands, otherwise I would do it all there. Is there any reason not to do it this way or is there a difference between the Channel EQ effect and the Equalization feature that Will is using here?

Are there other videos similar to this concept of correcting high gain hissing? My situation is when recording in a commercial kitchen setting...there are noises from the fridges, sautéed onions, etc. (it's a very prominent and over-whelming background noise). What would be ideal is to have the chef's voice (the subject) not over-powered by all that. My question is there an individual to assist me by guiding or suggesting how to remove background hissing. Hey Joshua, it sounds like you are trying to get rid of background noise rather than hiss, this is slightly different and much more difficult as the frequencies are less isolated and changes are much more likely to effect the voice. In future I’d suggest getting a mic as close to your subject as possible to isolate as much background noise as possible. Hope that helps 👍🙏🙌💪😎

Thanks for trying. I guess I’ll have to record again because I’ve tried these options and it does mess with your original voice

PHENOMENAL AUDIO TUTORIAL!! One of the VERY BEST I have ever seen!!! Thanks so much!! My only question is: you eluded to a "pre-set" you use for audio enhancement. Can you please take me through what your "usual audio enhancement pre-set" contains? I almost sense it is all the effects and filters visible on your inspector, but a little elaboration would be greatly appreciated. Thank you again, and now, I'm gonna look for your video on how you made that awesome into...it too is FANTASTIC!! Thanks again. Scott.

Hey! Thanks so much! The compressor pre set is just one of the built in Final Cut audio presets, I use a different one depending on the audio but voice 1 & 3 are normally my favs. Thanks so much for watching and commenting, so glad you found the video helpful! 🙌💪👍😎

Great Video! Thanks for sharing. I have since bought a RODE mic but it helped when I had to mix in some footage I shot prior to getting the mic.

Any recommendations for camera rumble as in the shotgun picking up the panning, tilting of the monopod?
@WillChidlow3 жыл бұрын
always a tricky challenge, try moving the mic off the camera if possible or simply don't use the sound for that clip. i know neither are ideal solutions but they do work. thanks for watching 👍😎🙏

All the options are great, I've never had success with noise removal or hum removal but the 31 band equaliser saved the day. I do however need to just figure out how to record better straight up, it would save time in editing. SUBBED tho! Thank you for the help!

Any tips on removing some talking in the background for a second or so? It is during an interview there is a person that talked loudly in the background and is not picked up in the audio.
@WillChidlow6 жыл бұрын
That sounds very tricky. Its incredibly hard to isolate noise like that without effecting the sound you want to keep. When it comes to audio it really is better to get right when you record it. Sorry I can't offer you a magic solution 😬👍🙏

Question, when I add a compressor I typically find the white noise raises in volume. I’ve tried a noise gate as well but the white noise returns when the gate opens up for the vocals; what would you recommend I do from here
@WillChidlow5 жыл бұрын
Hi Garrett, great question. Yes the compressor tends to push the levels which naturally effects white noise levels. You are right that a noise gate is very targeted and therefore cannot help in this scenario. This is when I tend to use the EQ to try and isolate the white noise frequencies and remove, just like I did in the video. Hope that helps a bit 👍🙏🙌😎
