Very nice! The cloud native model is really awesome

I didn't even notice the outage, my computer kept running on my latest OCI image and flatpak was as reliable as ever. I love it.

Except for the other day when flathub/gnome resources were down for most of a day but who's keeping track. :)

I use Silverblue and curious as to how this works. Does your computer download a whole fresh image every day? If so, how big's the download? If not, then how does it work?

kzbin.info/www/bejne/jmnLZGNqf9VshJo has more info on the process. Yeah you're downloading the differences from the previous image (I have mine set to daily) and then staging those changes on your disk. Once you reboot you are on the new image. Right now currently the layering is not as efficient as it could be but they're working on that. There are also probably a bunch of optimizations we could be doing to make that more efficient but we're still figuring it out. I'm watching videos like this from Viktor (strongly recommend his content in general): kzbin.info/www/bejne/sKHOooGGrKqtl8U That video will have way more information than what you asked for, but when he's downloading and you see all those layers, we're doing the same thing just for the whole OS.

I just watched your ublue nvidia video - great work. This naturally led me wondering if dkms is supported by silverblue. Doesn't appear to be yet, based on a cursory search. Dkms is actually used by quite a few 3rd part tools (especially in the enterprise), so this seems like a fairly significant roadblock for silverblue and its derivatives. Maybe custom OCI images might provide a solution?

I am relatively new to fedora and I was surprised to discover that they use akms (I hadn't even heard of it!).

Yep, I had to disable repos to get the Vauxite instance on my machine its updated chunks. Glad things got back up and running overnight. I look forward to whenever the Sericea (OSTree Sway) image gets visited at some point, the spin looks promising so far.

It's available right now as a rawhide build: quay.io/repository/fedora-ostree-desktops/sericea?tab=tags But probably better to wait until it's ready, might be worth trying in a VM though?
@phonewithoutquestion80 Жыл бұрын
@@JorgeCastro yeah I gave it a spin in a VM, it's very lean with no redundant tools like I've seen with other Sway based distro flavors. Waiting on my laurels for a hyprland image, that's a tight compositor.

@@phonewithoutquestion80 Post on the ublue-os github discussions and I'll take a look at seeing if we can do a hyprland one!

I just decide to put Kinoite into Google Translate for the fun and let the computer figure out how to pronounce it. It basically didn't know what to do with the word xD
