I love your focus on native plants! I recently learned that you need to plant a male and a female winterberry plant together (within 50 feet) to get the red berries.ETA: Berry Nice is a female clone that requires a male pollinator such as “Southern Gentleman” or “Jim Dandy” for pollination.

Thanks for the comment. I have several Jim Dandy cultivars spread around the yard. This shrub I just planted is about 12 feet from the nearest one.

@@Jem544 Perfect! I didn’t have any berries this year and wanted to spare you the same disappointment. Glad you already knew better!

That was a good point. I should have mentioned that for newer viewers....

It was amazing seeing them come in and start feeding on the berries. Made me happy 😊

I’ve been dying to see a cedar waxwing. I planted 3 Berry Poppins this spring but they are still tiny and won’t see any berries for a while. Also planted a brandywine viburnum and a chokeberry this year. They are all too young for berries this year though.

Sounds like we have similar goals. I've planted those plants also along with some serviceberries. hopefully our efforts will payoff. Thanks for the comment 🙂

Viburnum nudum 'Brandywine' will need a genetically different cultivar to produce berries. Viburnum nudum 'Winterthur' will work nicely.

@@tulipa763 Brandywine claims to be self pollinating. It is too soon to tell if mine will produce berries or not without a pollinator. Unfortunately, my already tiny shrub has been damaged down to nubs, but is starting to grow back.

Which nursery? I’m from Strongsville! Also, curious how many weeks are needed before the first frost for roots to take.

Pettis on Pearl road. I don't really worry about the frost. I've planted shrubs and trees in January..lol as long as the ground isn't frozen they'll be ok and as long as they're dormit or going dormit.
