Removing a Pontoon Helm or Console for Flooring Project

In this video I'm taking you through a quick guide of uninstalling a steering helm from a mid 2000's pontoon boat. This happens to be a Sweetwater with a Mercury outboard, but most brands of boats and motors will be very similar. By unhooking everything from the console properly you can get it out of the way and have it ready to reinstall after your new floor goes on.

My current project is a 1989 Playbuoy sportfish with a newer plastic console. Zero furniture. Only items in the console are steering and controls, so this job is super easy LOL

I tried to stop saying "easy" because it seems like there's always something keeping it from being truly easy...I try to use "simple" instead. At least that way in theory stuff can be simple, but not necessarily easy when hiccups occur!

We weatherproofed it like a house. Taped everything with flashing tape, laid a moisture barrier, then installed the floor. If it’s a boat you’ll take out often I would definitely underskin the bottom the prevent any water from splashing up against the deck boards on the bottom side

I have 2 red wires, one black and a gray wire coming from my Yamaha outboard. Why second red and what is the gray wire for? Any help appreciated.

According to my reference chart, red is simply battery positive. It could be split to supply power to more than one place...however usually key on power is yellow for Yamaha...so I'm not 100% sure on that one. Yamaha shouldn't have a solid gray wire that I know of...but there's a gray with a green stripe that would be for your alarm/warning buzzer. Are these all just loose wires coming from your ignition harness at the dash?

@@tomspontoons The four wires come up out of the floor into a harness. One of the red wires does have a number one on it.

@@diverduckdown I don't think I've encountered that before. Like I said, the red should be a power wire, so I'm guessing they just gave multiple supplies of power for additional gauges or accessories.
