A few notes: 1) You CAN leave the drawstring attached, and then once the carriage is off, engage the carriage lock to hold the lower plate centered. Totally your preference. 2) Don't forget, one of the anchor brackets is reverse threaded; seen lots of those screws stripped from folks going wayyy too hard in the wrong direction. 3) When reinstalling, you can also tighten the brackets just a bit snug to hold them sideways; makes things more manageable if you aren't used to a lot of wiggly parts all at once.

Thank you! Removed my carriage to clean and couldn’t get it back on. Your video saved me!

Very good tips! I especially like the paper clip extension! I’ve done about 6 H3K’s lately, and it’s amazing how quickly you can get comfortable with this carriage removal. So daunting at first, though! I find using a spring hook and a locking set of forceps really helps with the drawband. Awesome video- thanks for sharing it!

I appreciate seeing this, and while I'm sure my H3K would probably benefit from a carriage removal for cleaning, there is NO WAY I'm going to attempt this. My machine came into my possession fairly clean, and I've done what I can in cleaning with minor disassembly, but there's no lifeboat if I mess anything up. Banging around on a crippled low-end Smith-Corona to learn mechanics is one thing, this is another.

Luckily these were designed to be easily removed, whereas several other portable models were not. However, I do believe that if it doesn't need it...there's no sense in straining the bones of these old machines more than necessary.

Just found your channel, ill be your Happy 63rd Subscriber, like botton mashed. Thanks for this video, would like to se the Platen removed. I have a H3K '59 Gen 1, and i have the Repair Bible and the H3k repair books by Ted Munk, highly recommend those. There is no typewriter repair place near me, and i have a small collection of 7 machines, so i have to do all my own work. Thankfully I'm a Master Mechanic and work on cars so i have a great mechanical repair aptitude background. Two projects I'm working on is my '64 SCM Galaxie Deluxe was skipping and i had cleaned it really good, then the space bar felt off, then a carriage return felt and sound horrible, i flipped it over remove the panel to investigate and found the escapement rocker bracket has fallen out of its pinions.. And because this is a deluxe it have the what i like to call, machine gun kelly super space and all that's in my way... And I bought what looked like and was told it was fine, a good looking Olivetti Praxis 48 turns out is wasnt but the seller was cool and refunded me the shipping cost, and then I bought another, that lol maybe one day Ill learn, but it was supposed to be fine, when I got it everything works except it has a missing drive belt and its super dirty, OH, and it looks like a small dog chewed on the keys, the other machine is in perfect appearance, so I'm hopeful to make one goot Praxis 48 using parts from the other machine, i got both typewriters for like 40 bucks total so not too bad if I can't make anything work im basically out of a good meal with a friend lol. I collect these Historical Artifacts as I call them also writing Partners, I'm also a writer and use these machines to write my first drafts on. Been doing that for years, its just so nice to unplug and let the mind be free unchained and easily enter the land of make believe. Thank you again, looking forward to more. Thanks for reading. And wish me luck 🤞 🍀

Thanks for watching, and good luck with your repairs! I'm not the best with uploading videos but I'll try to do more in the future.

I usually just leave the drawband attached. I didn’t even know there was a special hook for it!
@unplugtypewritercompany91192 жыл бұрын
You definitely can leave it as is! It's just easier for me to reattach to the "holder" hook below (for when it comes time to reinstall.)

My tabs don’t work after carriage on / off. I can see they set and release, but they don’t catch.
