Man I felt how so clean for you in disposing the mice habitats from when their were issues long before. I have the same problem with my 1950's ranch with so little insulation and past mice infestation. I want to remove the floor boards (mix of tong and groove pine and 4 x 8 ply). I thought I may save the insulation and add to it, but after seeing you toss it all, I will do the same! Great video! THX!

Great video. Following WW2, there was a big push for affordable housing for the returning GI's and their families all over the US. Financed under the GI Bill, ranch style bungalows were going up in a hurry. Cutting corners to keep up with the demand could be a factor in the 'jake leg' roof rafter construction in your home. Kudos for the clean as you go. TFS.

I'm about to start a similar project in my UK house. Our attic only has 6" of insulation (built in 1986). The current building regulations require 12" of insulation minimum. Like yours my attic is 75% boarded for storage so I need to raise the height of the chipboard flooring by around 10" & add the extra top up insulation underneath + an air gap without adding too much extra weight. To achieve this I propose to use a kit of parts designed for this purpose made up of recycled plastic legs & aluminium channel. It won't be a cheap project but with the dramatic increases in electricity & gas prices we are facing adding attic insulation it is one of the best ways of reducing heat loss in winter. My ceilings (plasterboard) will stay in place. Loving your video's.

My c1852 Boston area house has a roof that's framed somewhat similarly. The ceiling joists cantilever out past the top plate by about a foot. The rafters have their tails cut at a 45 degree angle and sit on top of the joists (no notches, just nails). The rafters and joists essentially form a giant isosceles triangle. There's also no ridge beam. How it hasn't collapsed under the snow load ... I don't know

Old time thumb rule for joists. Distance in feet minus 2 equals width in inches. 14 foot distance needs 2x12's. For ceilings it can be less. Check with your local building professional.
@januzi22 жыл бұрын
Attics always reminds me of the "REC". Other than that, I don't really go to the attic in the building I'm living in. The roof was damaged and for a very long time water was "taking care of" the floor boards. Right now some are not stiff, but rather "springy", if that's the right term. So, I'm being worried that I'd land in one of the rooms that are below the attic.

This is completely off the subject, but this video proves what I've been saying to people who think "orbs" are ghosts: bits of dust *do* fly in all directions, at all speeds independently of the other dust particles around them, and *do* rapidly change their trajectories. Why don't you put the insulation directly under the roof? So the attic wouldn't get so hot or cold. It's so different how you build houses in the US from the way we do it here in Europe. we have walls made with bricks and concrete floors, only the roof structure is made of wood, but then insulated directly underneath. Thank you for showing and explaining
@glenlongstreet72 жыл бұрын
"For ceilings it can be less" ... This has to do with the load of an attic floor, a ceiling for the rooms below. This type of floor typically won't see the same load as a regular floor, hence your joists seem too small. I learned the thumb rule from my grandfather. He apprenticed in about 1910, so is not available for comment. Most of his work was in SE Massachusetts where we lived.
