I live in Southern California. My home has a room that was converted from the original garage. It was not insulated. In the winter it gets cold and in the summer it can get warm in there. We had an insulation installer come out and he gave us a quote for insulation to just the ceiling and another quote for the ceiling and the walls. We are considering just insulating the ceiling as there would be a lot of damage to put insulation in the walls. Since we are in Southern Cal would insulation in the ceiling without the walls make at least a 50% difference in the temperature fluctuating in the winter and summer?

I have a small piece of plywood that I used my table saw to cut a slit in the middle, wide enough for my knife. I put the plywood down, apply pressure, insert the blade, and slice. It's dummy proof and fast.

I live where it doesn’t snow but it’s hotter than hell in the attics most of the year. A contractor put faced insulation in the attic rafters and it kept the attic incredibly cooler all year. No bugs, they don’t like the fiberglass, I guess. Would there be a long term consequence for that? Should it have been non faced?

You’re fortunate that your trusses are conventional trusses instead of engineered trusses. That gives you a lot more room to crawl around instead of having to go around all the cross bracing trusses.

I love all the work that you do. You surely know what your doing. But, one question. You obviously live in a very cold climate. Why didn’t you build out your outer walls to 2x6’s in order to put thicker insulation in the outer walls to save more heat?
@gracepope38002 жыл бұрын
I heard you say sound bearer will this also be used as insulation to keep rooms warmer. When I built my home I insulated every room even the garage.

Question about your exterior wall insulation. Are you worried that moisture getting through the cladding will cause rot/mold? or is the exterior protected with a house wrap? My research suggested that if you aren't sure of the water tightness of your cladding you should use something that creates an air gap between the exterior and the insulation.
@guidoabarcia93112 жыл бұрын

The other point about why you are not insulating the rafters: from what I can see, it looks like your roof doesn't have any major functions for the house, like water boiler or hot water tank or things like that. In British houses, we typically have no basement and these functions are in the roof, so we do have to insulate the roof rafters to protect these functions and prevent heat loss. Anyway, thanks for the explanation. You were so thorough with the ceiling, I could see 2 layers of insulation in some places.

Thanks for the video. I have a walk up attic where I have to replace the faced R30 insulation on areas of the floor. I do not have access to the exposed studs from the living space underneath, unless I replace the ceiling. I don’t know how to install the new faced insulation and attach the faced side to the studs. If I don’t staple the insulation to the studs then there will not be a proper vapor barrier, is that correct?? Any recommendations on what I should do? Thank you.
@kellypruitt9355 Жыл бұрын
I’m installing this exact insulation on an exterior living room wall, but I have a steel outlet and switch box (real life This Old House lol). But my question is can this insulation be fitted around the steel boxes (in other words can it touch them)? Also I don’t have the wiring like yours, they are actually steel poles that my wires run through. So would just splitting it like you did in the wires be okay?

My insulation boss wanted the flap flush against the side of the two before because the drywall goes up and if you put a screw into a staple it will cause it to grow off center and into insulation instead of the stud so we always have to do it on the side of the stud not the face
@TheFixerHomeRepair2 жыл бұрын
I have seen that before. I don't like doing it that way because it crushes the insulation and makes for a trickier install. Neither way is wrong... I actually had one inspector make us do that, like I said in the video, codes are different everywhere. Thanks for watching!

Is the fire sealant the responsibility of the electrician or the home owner? We where our own contractors for our remodel and I know we didn’t do this 😬
@TheFixerHomeRepair2 жыл бұрын
Hey, Hayley! It is not the electricians responsibility as far as I know. It is done after all the electrical/plumbing before the drywall. As I said in the video it is part of the insulation inspection here but it all depends on where you live. Not the end of the world if it wasn't done in your house, much worse things are done (or not done) behind walls and houses stand for centuries. 😀😀. Thanks for watching!

@FrancisKoczur2 жыл бұрын
I prefer fiberglass to cellulose, less weight among other things. Compressing fiberglass increases the R-value per inch, but decreases the total R-value, so you end up needing more of it. I wouldn't call Kraft paper facing a vapor barrier. Double Kraft faced batts aren't that bad, but it is best not to. Putting the 2x6s perpendicular to the joists in the attic would have broken the thermal bridging better, and the batts would have been perpendicular too.
