I would add one extra step in your ghetto car seat cleaning method, after the first suck with the wet dry vac, apply a water/vinegar solution and draw it out again with the vac. This rinses and neutralises the detergent remaining in the fabric. Any remaining detergent will coat the fibres in a slightly sticky coating, which gets dirty again very quickly.
@Johanniscool4 жыл бұрын
Tone. Probably not 50/50, that’s pretty strong. Basically a detergent is alkaline so you want a slightly acidic rinse to neutralise the ph level. I’d try a few capfuls.

Do these have a cabin air filter? Have you considered an Ozone generator? There's also a refresher kit available that can disinfect and clean the A/C evaporator, it's a foam that you put in through the EVAP drain tube under the car, that'll condense into a liquid and drain out after 20 minutes or so Helps to get rid of older car "A/C" smell, but also good for pet or smoke
@MotoringBoxTV4 жыл бұрын
No filter. I have heard about ozone generators but I didn't want to purchase a piece of equipment I'd only be using once. One trick I used that gave good results on my old TJ Magna Wagon, The interior was mouldy when I bought it and since it was fabric I sprayed them with some ALDI Di-San pre wash spray for $1.25 and let it sit for a few minutes. I then hit them with the pressure washer, Let them dry for a few days and they came up a treat like new before I put them back in before I took the car for a blue slip and got it re registered. Hi mate, I'm looking at buying one of these Fairmont Ghia's as my first car. have you managed to get a decent android head unit like pioneer or kenwood units to fit in the car or was it more trouble than its worth. the woodgrain trim also covers where the head unit goes as well so im hoping to be able to retain that when i get one of the touch screens fitted. with backup camera. i wanted to pretty much buy an older car like that and put a couple of modern things in it but im also thinking where the head unit is is a bit low for the touch screen maybe but could live with it. anyway i was just interested to see how you went about it when you were looking at head units for your older cars. we did this to our Honda CRV. and the new head unit really fits well with the dashboard just completely modernized the crv looks great. just hope i can get one that looks decent into the Fairmont Ghia otherwise i might have to get a different mounting position for the touch screen.

Not something I am interested in attempting, but if I WAS going to, this is how I'd do it. Supercheap sell a single-din conversion kit to suit an AU (Aerpro or similar I think?) which I'd grab, and then I'd select a single-din android headunit with an externally mounted screen (search for 'joying single-din 8" android' to get an idea of the unit I'm talking about). I imagine the end result would look fairly neat, and I believe the screen angle can be adjusted upwards slightly too. The trouble with simply removing the factory head unit and then slapping a double-din android unit in there is you'll end up with an ugly gap between the head unit and the trim surround. Plus like you say, the screen will be pretty low down. Hope that helps! Good luck.
@cootason4 жыл бұрын
@@MotoringBoxTV thanks very much mate for the info. I think I will give it a miss for a while the series 3 looks great but might consider it down the track the single din to screen might work but the empty space would be ugly indeed. Also remember to clean the door rubbers and door cards, the amount of tar that is trapped in those rubbers is amazing.. Also use bi-carbonate if soda, make a thick solution with it mixed with laundry powder and scrub that in the seats. Leave then hit it with water and a brush and micro fibre cloth or chamois. Then wet vac it. You will do each seat individually then get the next seat started... (Coming from a professional ex-car detailer). Did the AU have seat airbags? If it does you should always disconnect battery before disconnecting them, not sure with the Ford but if you pull the seats in your Calais without doing it then it will bring up a fault and you need a tech2 to clear it. One thing you can try, if you have a steamer then open up the dash vents and pump steam into it to clean it out.

A big thing people often forget relating to cigarette smoke contamination inside a car is the air conditioner condenser. Stuff is available that can be used to somewhat clean the condenser whilst it is still installed and that can make a big difference. It is a shame you didn't clean the original carpet. Im a smoker and before I sell a car I clean them well enough that most don't notice. The carpet I clean by using hot soapy water and a not to firm brush and giving it a chance to soak a bit then hose it off. Vac dry it and leave it out in the sun for a day or so. The worst are cars that have had young kids in them and mothers frequently don't bother to clean up. Some are genuinely disgusting.

you would have bee better noff to hang the old carpet up get some omo matic and a karcher/gurney then just spray that badboy while feeding in omo, start from the top and work your way down and you will be amazed at what comes out and how much better it smells, it even fluffs up the carpet a bit and makes it look nice
@MotoringBoxTV2 жыл бұрын
That's actually what I did later - bought a second hand one in better condition, poured washing powder all over it and massaged it in with a sponge, and then gurney'd the hell out of it. Turned out great.

Whatever's easiest to get out, or the car which hasn't had a good run for a while. I try to use them all.

I all for doing all the work yourself RE: headlining but what I have found by doing this myself is the glue you buy from auto stores is useless. It will stick for a few months but after 6 months your back to where you started. SAGGY.
@MotoringBoxTV4 жыл бұрын
I think it depends on the glue. A lot of the spray on stuff is rated up to 70° which isn't high enough for Aus. The stuff I'm going to use is good up to 130°, so hopefully it'll be up to the task.

I'd prefer rubber flooring. What's the point of carpet in a car??

Great for when you're driving barefoot?

MotoringBox a bare foot passenger maybe. But just a sponge for stinky substances otherwise.

I'm having flashbacks as a teenager being in the car of my then-girlfriend mother's car. It was an AU. The mother was a heavy duty chain smoker - not to hate on smokers, but I wonder if she's actually still alive. I'm sure the AU had a higher chance of survival, some to think of it.
@MotoringBoxTV4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I have one like that, my friend's mother smoked. I'd usually end up in the back seat directly behind her. And when she ashed her cigarette out the window it usually flew back into my eyes.

Vinegar & water in a spray bottle. Gets any smell out

I've heard lots of tips like that... I think in the end I still prefer stripping everything out and clean/replace!
