Totally agree. Got pretty much same engine in my 1987 Tech I 325i Sport. Worked on hundreds of different models of car (ex-mechanic), some cars even dating back to 1920's... and the BMW M20 is easily in the top shelf amongst the best sounding engines ever

I used to work on Volkswagens and would do that so there wasn't a mass of connectors in one spot. It has multiple levels of reasons. The Germans loved making some wires hard to tell the difference so that trick is very handy.

The E-30 M3 I owned back in the 90’s was a wonderful to drive but expensive car to maintain. Every 8000 miles it needed to have the valves done at $800-1000 a service visit. Oh how I miss that car now. Best sports car I’ve ever owned.

Excellent stuff. I used to live off E30’s about 15 years ago. I’ve had loads including a 325i Sport in Sterling Silver with blue leather (H115EPM) which I restored, a few of 320i Lux (one coupe and two saloons), maybe a couple more and my 1988 E30 M3 in Diamond Schwartz which went off to Holland around 2010 (F118RTM). Loved that thing and had it 5 years which is very long for me! Got my brother a late H plate 215PS M3 in white and then 1 of the 50 UK Sport Evolution 2.5’s. Who would have thought they’re 120k now!!! We still keep a MINT 1990 325i Motorsport Convertible manual in Sebring Grey and with only 91k and a manual box. Done about 1200 miles in 10 years! Lives in storage, more so after some minor paint a few years back. Utterly utterly rot free, and a proper 798 option code car with bubble leather, extended leather dash/door cards etc. Got offered £25k a couple of years ago but it’s not for sale; cannot replace it, and regret selling the M3’s so she stays! Got loads of other toys as well including some Italian stuff and a few Porsche. E30 remains!

Wow, what is the history behind that building, When you prepared to pool that engine out I was expecting an ordinary engine hoist to be rolled out. Then comes a huge multi ton suspended crane capable of lifting the engine out of a diesel locomotive. Don't get me wrong that is very handy, it is just not something you see in your everyday car shop.
