You could go with combining fairy and dragon into a sort of "fairy tale" type, as they're both pretty magic-based for a stem-based region, and there's scientists who specifically research folklore and fairy tales, and how legends reflect the societies that made them! Of course you could always make "fairy type" be more like an "emotions type" and have it be a psychology thing, if you wanted to keep fairy seperate and relate it to a science (that is if psychic type isn't already filling an emotions type- the new naming conventions are super cool, though!)

I really like Dendro for Grass! Genshin Impact did it, so there's precedence for it working, plus the PHD trio feels too much of a serendipitous coincidence not to lean into it. @bilhert9351 Жыл бұрын

@janthehuman1679 Жыл бұрын
I also agree that “Dendro” works well for the equivalent of the grass type. Pokémon itself didn’t seem to care whether it named their “plant” type off in a way that fit proper classifications, and they even classified mushroom Pokémon as Grass types. I think the fact that the name “Dendro” isn’t quite accurate to what the type means could actually serve as a good tangential learning opportunity for players. They would see this new word (which rhymes with the other starter types, btw) and ask themselves what that word actually means, since it’s not one you’d usually encounter in a game about mon-collecting or a game centered around elemental typings. And the fact that such a learning opportunity could come so early in the game, while also fitting the fun PhD starter trio abbreviation, would definitely serve to set the tone of the entire game. It would give the game a unique feel, while also not feeling completely out of left field (since it was mentioned already that “Dendro” was used as an element in Genshin Impact), and demonstrate that this game has a lot of great references to science and math in it. I really think you should go with “Dendro” for your plant type! 😁 EDIT: Oh, and you could also even have an unimportant NPC in the early game who mentions that “Dendro” actually has more to do with trees than plants. There’s even some lore opportunities there, where the type might even be called that due to the original Dendro-type mons all being related to trees. The later plant-based mons could have been classified as that type, despite not being related to trees specifically, leading to an interesting (and perhaps slightly realistic) taxonomical misnomer.

I'm definitely not the first to say this, but Dendro has as much of a reason to be the name of a type as Grass does. You can get away with playing fast and loose with plants. And I do think that maybe combining the Dragon and Fairy type (into a "Fable" type, maybe?) Would be a good idea. It'd let you get across the idea that "X is a dragon" while not limiting yourself to just dragon tropes for both the designs and type match-ups. Plus, having fables be super effective against fables is a fun way to play with the tropes of fables, since it's so often one magical creature that stops another... If not a metal-clad knight or gun-toting hunter, of course. (Also having a Fable about a fuckin artillery cannon just sounds funny, but also still kinda accurate to fables (robin hood, anyone?)) Fables could also hit the Anthropology side of science to really fit in with the gimmick, since Fables are a mixture of made-up stories, life lessons, and true events, albeit usually embellished.

"I don't want a type thats stronger than others" I have a completely opposite approach In a pokemon-like game I may attempt to do in unspecified future with 97% chance of failing that attempt, I want to make one type "broken" on a type chart Fire type. Because like... you know, fire hurts. I would have to completely change starter formula also but lets ignore that Fire would be deceptivly bad. At first glance it might seem absurdly op, effective against most types, very little types that are effective against it. But I would actually make it pretty weak. Fire type moves that non fire type mons would be able to learn would be weak. Something that can still hurt, but like, not the best. Solid B tier, good in general, but there are better generalist moves, and far better specialist moves. Other fire type moves would be pretty strong, but only part fire type mons could learn them. Here's another nerf: Unless fire mons have weak base stats (in which case like, whatever), they would be monotype, or maybe triple idk, what I have in my head is a very vauge idea that I don't even think I will pursue, but if I do I might do more than 2 types per mon. ANYWAY, strong in base stat fire mons would be paired with types that make weaknesses worse. Instead of 2x weakness to water or ground, it is now 4x weakness. And moves of antifire types would be good even on non antifiretype mons. And one final idea - A generalist move that is just kinda okay, like a C or maybe D tier, but with a caveat, it deals more damage to fire type pokemons and ignores their resistances. Boom, I just made something that at first glance looks absolutely broken, but in actuality other pieces of game balance morphs around it to make it pretty weak in result. So yeah Sorry for writing a book

As for a ‘dendro’ type, I don’t see a reason to NOT have it. While your plant-based mons’ may not be always trees, it’s not as if all grass types are well, grass either. In the end, I’ve seen other places use ‘dendro’ and I see no reason not to use it if it generally fits a theme of plants and in general, works well with the ‘PHD’ thing you have going for you. Monster Hunter has dragon-type damage as well, which afaik tends to be most effective against creatures which use dragon type as well. I don't suppose deciduo would work for grass type? Same root word that decidueye comes from (deciduous), and not all deciduous plants are trees. Would work best if your grass monsters all had seasonal forms...

For fun ideas for names (most are quite simple, but maybe it spark a trend and we further boost the algorithm): Grass ---> Pytho Fire --> Pyro Water --> Hydro Electric --> Volt Psychic --> Esper Ice --> Cryo/Frost Normal --> Neutral Fighting --> Brawler Flying --> Aero Poision --> Noxious Rock/Ground --> Geo Bug --> Arthro (yeah, may be a problem here) Ghost --> Phantom Dragon --> RIP Steel --> Metal Dark --> Umbra Fairy --> Pixie

I love your videos and creative process so much. It makes my day every time you post. I'm becoming a patron. Also if, when producing the game, you need any help with the art asset workload, I'd love to help, I am a fairly experienced artist myself!

Seeing different approaches to the 'Dragon' concept in alternative creature collectors is particularly interesting since it's not a standard element at all. I had a set of types for my own concept. The closest to Dragon I had was a type I called Monster. It was inspired not only by stereotypical Dragon Pokemon, but also others that fit the classical 'monstrous' Pokemon archetype, such as Tyranitar, Kangaskhan, Nidoking and Rhydon. It's a crude stand in at best as it wouldn't function anything like Dragon at all, but I liked the idea behind Dragon enough I wanted an allusion to it.

somebody mentioned a "fairy tale" type in another comment, and I was actually going to say something similar, but having a "myth" type pokemon. this could cover any pokemon that are based on fairly tales, mythes, or stories. this could include actual fairies, dragons, even cryptid-based pokemon like a bigfoot! there actually is a game that has done this, that being Wizard101, with Myth being a whole school of magic on its own along with the other elements.

I am very curious, what with your (much appreciated!) devition to accuracy, whether you plan to make fungi its own types. And if so what you plan to do with something like lichen xD (which is a fungus, plant, and cyanobacteria alliance) Also, this is just coming from a botany person but i do think "botano" makes most sense since not all plants photosynthesize at all! And also things like lichen are still traditionally grouped with botany

I think Dendro would work really well! Not every grass type Pokémon has a designed based on grass
@karilizard36 Жыл бұрын
call grass dendro, because it sounds good, we might not care if it's referring to trees. also what if you called fairy something like fay (but you could also add and o at the end), or even faerie.

I think split evolutions for Drarkle would be cool to show off different kinds of fireworks, just two or three.

You've given me an idea for my own made-up creature collector. I'm unable to code because I'm big dumb, but I've had the idea since your "removing the Rock Type" video to merge Types simular to eachother to create my own types. Poison got relagated to just a "side effect". E.g Dragons already breath fire and Dragon moves already have some "draconic fire" so Fire + Dragon = personal Fire Type. For my Grass Type, I mixed it with Bug since the whole "fauna and flora/Bugs polinate plants" thing to create the Dendra Type. The idea is that this one's a bit more adult. The "Pokemon" are much more adult themed and have more detail. Kinda like Pokemon Clover, but with much, MUCH less racist/sexist and Meme Pokemon. I'm not making a Fire Type Taliban member starter like that thing. I mean like Pokemon based on drugs e.g a Rock Type gemstone Pokemon based on the idea of Crystal Meth, or a Steel/Dark Type Pokemon based on the British "Roadman" that actually maul other Pokemon. I obviously have some that aren't just over the top edge e.g my first ever Fakemon turned into one of these "Nexobeasts" (yeah, that's what the Pokemon of my thing are called), some actually fleshed out ideas, and those that are based on the edgier themes have actual thought put into them rather than "edge for the sake of edge". Like, the Meth Nexobeast I brought up earlier being based on a gem deposit that evolves into a Garganacl-esque golem that rampages throughout mines based on the EFFECTS of Meth rather than just "haha Walter White Golem".

I would have replaced Dragon and Fairy with "light", combining the core themes of both types. Dragon is supposed to be direct and focused, not caring about most of the other types due to it's power (hence the lack of type interaction); while fairy is very indirect and tricky, directly opposing Dragon from a thematic standpoint. Both of these can describe light. It moves at a set speed in as close to a straight line as it can within the curvature of space, while having an incredible amount of power due to being literally pure energy. However, it also doesn't have any set position and can take on a large variety of forms on both a macroscopic and quantum scale. So you would end up with a type that has an inherent dichotomy to it and acts as it's own antithesis. With both the pokemon and moves of this type either being incredibly direct (like a laser), or always seeming to be trying to trick or confuse (like individual photons). I at least find it interesting.

Does it really matter if your monsters are trees or not? Pokémon calls it “grass” but none of them are actually based on grass. It’s just to get the idea across.

I think the dragon type is not that strong anymore, is literally OP just because gamefreak love the idea of making every pseudo or Legendary that type, like appletun is not that strong not alolan eggxecutor, but literally garchomp outclassing every aspect of flygon just one gen later, or making hydreigon haxorus druddigon in the same gen, but if the dragon type is gone i think a alternative type like could born, like "mana" "aether" or maybe "myth" type, and with that we could see mons like a minotaur of myth type or a science vs myth tematic, and i like the fact that You can still make dragon Mons and not needing the dragon type

Just a suggestion; Grass > Plant Fire > Pyro Water > Hydro Flying > Aero Rock & Ground > Geo Poison > Venom Psychic > Mental Steel > Metal Ice > Cryo Dark > Brutal Ghost > Necro Fairy > Magic Bug > Insect Fighting > Combat Electric > Lightning Dragon > You eliminate this type

Elemental wood is super underrepresented, considering China made it one of it's big five. Just give it the name, most of the attacks will wind up tree related anyway.
@neversparky Жыл бұрын
With your point about Dendro not fitting since most of the mons wouldn't be tree-based, wouldn't that also apply to how most grass types aren't based on grasses specifically but moreso plants in general?
@isaaclu6415 Жыл бұрын
I think the existence of a dragon kinda force any lizard/snake adjacent mon into one and there will always be arguments why A is a dragon and B is not. Dragon means too much to be a type, it's probably better to let people decide what is or is not a dragon.
@Jomalequi Жыл бұрын
dragon type is also used on monster hunter, I mean, like an element, damage type... like in pokemon, there are some games that take that variant that is basically the same like "demon" element, something to take in account when talking about pokemon logic, is that sometimes some elements werent tought to be beyond first generation, dragon type were more about a boss type thats why the power and resistances fairy = fae, dream, whimsy, arcane, mythic

I suggest chloro as chlorokinesis is the name for manipulation of plants and all and Pyrokinesis is manipulation of fire Hydrokinesis is manipulation of water So I thought chloro might be good
@felipecastro585210 ай бұрын
With regards to the grass type why not name it Chloro type? It's the same greek root as in Chlorophyll and it's an easily recognizable association with all sorts of plantlife. Alternatively if you don't mind mixing Latin with Greek a lot more options open up, Flora would be an obvious choice
