WELL DONE. I'm in the process of removing a conifer myself. Luckily it's not quite as big as the one you have just removed. I found this video after looking for an easier way to remove it by hand. I followed the same principles with the root as you have, so I'm glad I've not been braking my back in vein.

Was intimidated by a big conifer tree in the garden that professional gardeners just wanted to stump grind. Going to give it a shot.

I did it in summer and took a half hour in the morning and like the same in the evening to get one out. So i ended up taking 3 out. spitzhacke was useful and some massive long ironstake.. This was past summer but i just cleared one 3 m tall conifer out and planted Eibe, which is a local native Plant. More suited for this Enviroment.

I’m wondering how many hours it took to remove this conifer and how long you will wait before removing the second one. Personally, I’d have to wait at least a week after lots of pain relievers, hot soaking baths and working up my courage to do that hard work all over again. Don’t you have a third one along a pathway as well? Congratulations on getting this one gone. 👏

Haha. Ingrid, your message made me giggle. I have almost finished the 2nd one already. It takes about 1 full day each. But i did it over 3 separate dates. Yes you are correct about the third very very large one. I intend tackling that next week. Watch this space for a 'fast forward' /timelapse video. Best wishes. Mark

Handy tips, I have a row of large conifers which are staying purely because they would just be impractical to remove, especially alone. There is one about half the size of the one you removed here along my back wall which I intend to remove so this was good advice :)

Oh best of luck. But take your time. I saw mine as a kind of archaeological dig. Patiently scraping away the earth with a grubbing hoe. Then cutting the roots. Eventually it wobbled. Don't strain yourself

@@MarksHouseandGardenUK thank you, yes thanks to your video I know how to tackle it now, cut the preriferal roots then wobble, there's no rush for me, will take my time, as I say the only trouble is it's been cut level with the floor. 👍🏼

Hi neil. I left several roots in the ground. I am confident that they will just rot away and be taken by worms and microorganisms. They haven't regrown. 18 months later. Mark

I got myself a mini chainsaw, it's my favourite toy in the garden. I used it to get the thicker branches of a huge dead conifer off. I'm left with the stump now though 😔
