While training to be a nurse, I came across a lady who had a wound that couldn’t be healed after repeated antibiotics and surgery. They tested using sterile, special medical grade maggots on the wound and poof, her wound was cleared up and healed. She said it was weirde to think of it, but the pain and constant struggle to gain comfort meant she didn’t care. The way it healed her wound was amazing. Yes, maggots are “natural”, but they can be a curse or a blessing. Hello 👋🏼 to all you fellow herds persons. Stay safe

Good on you for standing up for the farmers. Being a farmer and looking after so many animals is a hard job and sometimes it can be hard to catch every last little thing that happens to every hoof. You can tell the farmers care alot and want the best for their animals because as soon as they notice, something is done about it. So many lazy and uneducated keyboard warriors sending hate towards the farmers when they don't have a clue about livestock handling or how a farm works

If the Farmers want the best for the animals why do they send them to the slaughterhouse then? I understand not seeing hoof injuries but saying farmers want the best for the animals is far from the truth. If you truly love animals why do you eat them and why do you treat cows pigs and chicken different and dogs?

It won't let me edit so I had to do a new post. But I also wanted to say its unfortunate we have to kill any animals for food but it is a necessity. I've heard of vegans having to give up their choice of eating lifestyle because their bodies actually needed what "meat" provides for the body.Annnnnnd you can't REALLY compare a dog to a cow. I don't t think a cow is gonna cuddle up in bed with you, sit, stay, give its paw. And I sure wouldn't want to pooper scoop THAT! just saying

I love how you always defend the farmers, because random people on the internet have absolutely no clue how handling livestock works. A dog having maggots in its paw and the owner not noticing is MUCH, MUCH different to a case like this. People say they want farm animals to live happy free lives grazing under the sun, but at the same time will freak out if one of those animals has an issue it’s been masking and the farmer didn’t notice immediately, it’s an oxymoron

You bring up such a good point. Being a farmer is an incredibly hard job. They know their livelihood depends on these animals, so it's in their best interest to take care of them, but with so many, it could be very easy to miss problems.

That is not necessarily true. There are many places unlike the USA that have serious laws in order to protect their animals and livestock, that are actually taken very seriously, where this would NEVER happen because not only do they not live in poor conditions, but they are regularly examined to make sure that any type of injury or etc could ever get that far. @@kuywasaamazikeen8048 uh, you really need to pay more attention to Hoof GP's videos. All animals are vulnerable to health problems just like all humans are. Animals hide injuries much better than humans because they must do so to survive. This farmer's cattle are in amazing health! And this farmer called in to get treatment as soon as he noticed a problem with a few cattle. He caught and had problems treated much sooner than many.

@@kuywasaamazikeen8048 You know these videos take place in Scotland, right? That's why he's driving on the other side of the road, has an accent, etc. Further, as Graeme has explained several times, these types of injuries often start invisibly: many of these holes start as internal bruises, sometimes just from having to stand more than usual, that cause gaps or pockets in the hoof, that in turn feed bad bacteria that eat away at the healthy horn.

I was a critical care/ER nurse for decades. I saw a lot of people come in with maggots, usually in line or armpit areas. A lot of these people had no support and were often homeless prior to hospitalization. Maggots were always gross, but they actually provide a useful service by helping to debride infected wounds. They actually do not eat live flesh. They will eat dying flesh, which can be misinterpreted as eating live flesh. And the body does release chemicals to try and kill the maggots, which can cause inflammation that also gets interpreted as the maggots eating live flesh. Graeme, you do a bang up job on your hooves. Pediatric level care for cows. You rock!

There are multiple types of myiasis. Obligatory myiasis involves the maggot eating living tissue. To my understanding it's far less common than facultative myiasis (living off of dead tissue), but it is still possible. It varies based on the species of fly in questions. Some flies are just built different in a way I will hopefully never encounter.

I had a wonderful mare (who lived into old age) who, at about 15, stepped on a nail that seemed to churn up from the wet soil like sometimes they do, no matter how hard you try. It puncture her navicular bursa. She was hauled to a well known vet school here in the US. They did surgery but after a time, she was failing. The doc packed her foot with sterile maggots and they ate that infected flesh. Crazy but it saved her life. So, the old maggots helped save her. I don’t know how a maggot becomes sterile and then you have enough to pack a horse’s foot, but, they saved my dear horse. These love your vids and how you help these cows. Awesome stuff!

I’ve seen other cattle hoof trimming shows now… very cool work. I can see why you hit a million subscribers, though - you focus not just on the hoof heal but on general care and well being, comfort of the animal: the compassion and dedication it must take to do the mundane every day. You add comforting music, beautiful scenery of the drives out, and give a comprehensive view of the profession. You treat it like an entertainment show and highlight the satisfaction of relieving pressure in the title bars - who can’t relate to relief of pressure these days? Plus, you seem outgoing, friendly, and authoritative teaching in a low key curiosity led manner. This is a great show. It’s a crowd pleaser for my family and brings up discussions about animal husbandry in a sometimes subsidized industry. I like that some farms you visit are like Uber free range, super natural, and others rely more on the tools, tricks, and tech like rubber slats, both maximizing profitability through healthy heads. You make the work seem fun, refreshing, and fascinating. Great channel. Thank you for the education.

I love to see you working with your children your son looks like my grandson loving anything that goes and your mini me. My son in law owns a window washing business in Vermont, USA K & B window cleaning. He has started with having my grandson Byron Scott fill up the water bottles and wash the cleaning wrags for the business. My son in law worked with his dad. He went to college but decided he liked the window washing business better. So he started a residential one so not to compete with his dad. He knows works 8 months fulltime doing that. He found a local LP propane Business that wanted a seasonal driver and now he is one payroll year round. He helps on rainy days and helps cover vacations. He does the 4th of July parade which my grandson loves.

Very interesting. I find it incredible that the sole can still form as a complete layer over disease & dirt, encapsulating it so perfectly that only a few small telltale signs indicate that all is not well. It’s amazing that the layers can grow so fast that they overcome such hindrances as dermatitis or even stones.

Those cows are so calm and peaceful, as though they have been through this before and appreciate the treatment and end result. Last year my wife spotted a rash starting on my feet when I was getting out of the shower. off she went for the correct treatment and an application, and I was well and mooing in appreciation. I am 84, a 20-year US Army Vietnam vet and wounded during each tour. This man has what appears to be the correct equipment and knows how to use it. Thank you, sir, for your expertise and care for these animals. I watch a one-man operation in China struggling to chop of the grossly long and often infected hooves on Donkeys. These animals have been more than neglected, the owners probably don't have money to survive for their families. Those poor donkeys have hooves extending way out front on the animal, and they often fall due to the long hooves and their treatment is a beating until they get up and back to work. Again, whoever owns these cows thank you for the proper treatment. When I was a kid, my family couldn't afford to raise us, so we became Wards of the state, and most families that live on a farm took us in, as free help and treated us equal the animal treatment. We were often beaten when we complained. I learned how to shovel manure and drive a tractor and smelled similar to the barn. My Father remarried after nine years, and his new wife assisted in getting me getting out of that nightmare life. I still remember the wife of the man running his dairy farm pulled me aside and said, you know Kenneth you don't have to go with "them" you are welcome to stay with us. I know my dilemma is not what this video is about, but personally I see a resemblance. Again sir, thank you for treating these animals with the care you provide and giving them the life the need.
